Historical regional patterns of infant mortality in Austria.

"First an overview is given of the secular decline of infant mortality in Austria between 1820 and 1950.... Second the study analyses the historical regional differences of infant mortality in Austria comparing data for all 99 political districts (Politische Bezirke) for the period 1900 to 1950. The most important results are: At the turn of the 19th century infant mortality rates were generally lower in Alpine than in non-Alpine regions and lower in cities than in their surrounding areas. This geographical pattern which remained constant until the 1950s was solely determined by differences in post-neonatal mortality rates. Plausible explanations for these regional differences are discussed." (SUMMARY IN FRE)

[Early neurologic rehabilitation--an urgent requirement].

The majority of patients with severe craniocerebral damage can be enabled to return to a relatively independent life if early rehabilitation measures are provided. The number of beds currently available for early rehabilitation, however, covers little more than 10 percent of the demand at hand. Expanding the number of beds available hence is a pressing need. The present article contains pertinent information in view of qualitative and quantitative implementation of related efforts.

Sonographic examination of the brain stem area in infants. An echographic and anatomic analysis.

For differentiation of diseases with impaired cerebrospinal fluid circulation and pathological alterations of the midbrain an exact and reproducible sonographic visualization of the brain stem area is of paramount importance. The approach through the anterior fontanelle has proved to be insufficient to accomplish this task. Therefore, we have developed 5 standard sonographic sections enabling detailed study of the brain stem. Typical sonographic views are compared with equivalent anatomical brain sections. To date, 330 infants have been examined using this method, making evaluation of brain stem, aqueduct, fourth ventricle, basilar artery and basal cisterns possible.

[Sagittal widths of the cervical spinal canal in the computerized tomogram].

The sagittal diameter of cervical spinal canals provided in radiological and anatomical literature cannot be used for the computertomographical diagnostics. Values measured by CT are lower than widths determined by other methods. Resulting from its high sensitivity computertomography detects even slight mineralisations and ossifications that cannot be seen on conventional X-ray pictures. CT is therefore the most suitable X-ray method for the diagnosis of stenosed cervical spinal canals.

Histological observations on muscles from cases with aplasia of the tibia.

Muscles of the lower leg and foot from 3 cases with aplasia of the tibia were investigated by light microscopy. The crural muscles are atrophied in all cases, whereas the small muscles of the foot are quite normal. The histological appearance of the degenerated muscles is characterized by atrophied muscle fibers and fatty infiltration. There are no signs of hypertrophy or regeneration. These observations suggest that the atrophy is caused selectively by inactivity of the crural muscles.

[Computer tomography image of brain changes in an adult following resuscitation].

First description of a CT cerebral finding in an adult who had suffered cardiac arrest 14 days prior to CT and had been reanimated. Parts of the cerebral cortex, the thalamus and the brain stem ganglia appear moderately hyperdense; after injection of contrast medium there was a marked enhancement in these regions of the brain. The possible neuropathological correlate of this CT finding is discussed on the basis of relevant literature.

[Reflections on computer tomographic demonstration of extensive brain calcinosis in hyperparathyroidism].

An observation in our department showing vast calcifications of the brain proved by computertomography is compared to similar cases described in literature. Typical localisations of such calcifications are brought into relation with given anatomical conditions of the regions of calcifications. The spatial appearance of the structures of brain, their relative capillary density and the respective presence of an absolute amount of capillaries favour comprehension of chalc by computed tomography.

Intrinsic asthma and bacterial histamine release.

In this study of intrinsic asthma (IA) in children the pathogenic role of bacteria in respiratory disease was elucidated by a basophil histamine liberation technique. Several strains of bacteria caused release of histamine from peripheral leukocytes in vitro. Normal, non-infectious and non-atopic children frequently responded in a similar fashion, although positive responses were less frequent. It seems that two different mechanisms of bacterial histamine release exist: interaction with the basophil-bound IgE and a direct interaction with the cell surface. It is suggested that the histamine release takes place only in the lung of IA patients, where a defective pulmonary barrier could permit the bacteria to enter, but not in healthy individuals.

[Degenerative blockbuilding between the 2d and 3d cervical vertebrae].

Two from 59 anatomical samples of the upper cervical spine show an osseous fusion of the axis and the third cervical vertebra. Moreover, a non-osseous but very rigid union between the second and the third cervical vertebrae is observed in five cases. Generally the fusions seem to be caused by degenerative processes. For these, a more horizontal or vertical orientation of the articular facets of the vertebral joints is important. The failure of development of the dorsal part of the axis' transverse process promotes degenerative alterations.
