Attitudes towards oocyte and embryo donation and disposal.

The attitudes of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) patients, their relatives, and their friends towards oocyte and embryo donation and disposal of frozen embryos were determined by questionnaire. The results obtained from a group of patients undergoing IVF treatment in the hospital were compared and some differences in attitudes were detected. Most respondents find embryo research and the creation of embryos, especially for research, acceptable under some circumstances and this contrasts with current Victorian legislation.

Prognosis and histology in Stage I nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC).

During 1969-1975, 212 new patients with Stage I nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) with a tumor apparently confined to the nasopharynx were treated at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kowloon, Hong Kong. The initial histologies of 137 patients were available for review and further studies. The primary tumors were histologically classified into two major types--squamous cell carcinoma (35 patients) and undifferentiated carcinoma (102 patients). The latter was further divided into 4 sub-types: lymphoepithelioma of the Schmincke type, lymphoepithelioma of the Regaud type, spindle cell carcinoma, and undifferentiated carcinoma of the nasopharyngeal type. Such histological typing of the initial tumor was not of value in predicting the clinical outcome, whether in terms of 5-year crude or disease-free survival rate, or the tendency of the tumor to develop recurrence at the primary site, or distant metastases after a standardized course of radiation therapy. There is no significant correlation between the extent of mononuclear infiltration nor fibrosis in the tumor stroma and the survival or tumor control rates.

Congenital absence of fallopian tube segments.

A case is reported in which laparotomy demonstrated that the proximal portion of the left Fallopian tube was absent and that the distal end was separated into 3 portions. There is no previous report of a congenital abnormality of this type.

Pelvic adhesiolysis--the assessment of symptom relief by 100 patients.

This study reports the effectiveness of pelvic adhesiolysis in relieving symptoms in patients with gross pelvic adhesions. Based on 100 patients' responses to a questionnaire, adhesiolysis was found to be of value in treating infertility, chronic pelvic pain and dyspareunia. Its value in relieving dysmenorrhoea was less certain while it did not influence menstrual pattern or premenstrual tension.

Cancer in Hong Kong: some epidemiological observations.

A good coverage by the Hong Kong Cancer Registry of cases of the common cancers diagnosed in Hong Kong during 1974-78 is indicated by an excess of cases over deaths registered, which is according to expectation from survival prospects. The trends during 1961-79 showed a rapid increase in mortality from lung cancer in both sexes, a moderate rise in liver cancer in males, and small increases in esophageal cancer in males and colon cancer in females. Cervical cancer was the only neoplasm that showed a decreasing trend, although this was small in proportion. Some epidemiological observations on cancer arising in the lung, liver, larynx, and nasopharynx are presented.

Gas phase carboxylate anions fron p-nitrobenzyl esters of fatty acids.

Gas phase carboxylate anions have been efficiently generated from the p-nitrobenzyl esters of nine fatty acids ranging in size from C6 to C22. The process involves the dissociative resonance capture of 2.9 e V electrons by the derivatives. The procedure is specific and gives the carboxylate anions as the base peak in all but two of the derivative. The technique gives extremely simple spectra, with little additional fragmentation and no rearrangement ions.
