Malignant mixed tumor of the vagina probably arising in mesonephric rests.

An exceedingly rare tumor arising in the upper lateral vagina is described histologically, histochemically, and ultrastructurally. It is compared to the lesion reported by Okagaki et al. which is considered to represent the same type of tumor. Comparison with synovial sarcomas indicates that the lesion is similar, but the reasons why it should not be so classified are discussed. Evidence is presented for the origin of these tumors in mesonephric rests (Gartner's duct).

Evaluation of polymer flock and metal alloy intra-tubal device in pigtail monkeys.

Two intratubal devices, one covered with a flock made from ethylene vinyl acetate and the other constructed of titanium-aluminum-vanadium alloy with an etched surface were evaluated after being placed in the Fallopian tubes of pigtail monkeys. In some instances, the devices were medicated with 10% silver nitrate or 50% quinacrine hydrochloride. The microflock device anchored in the tube mechanically, but there is no evidence that either the polymeric or metal alloy device formed an actual attachment with Fallopian tube epithelium. It is suggested that a mechanical design approach to ITDs might be more productive than one which assumes a tissue-device bond.

Clear cell carcinoma of cervix and vagina in progeny of women who received diethylstilbestrol: three cases with scanning and transmission electron microscopy.

Three cases of clear cell carcinoma of the cervix and vagina in progeny of women administered diethylstilbestrol (DES) were studied ultrastructurally. The patients were young and had a positive history of maternal ingestion of DES during pregnancy. Similar ultrastructural features were observed in all cases. The neoplastic cells were arranged in solid nests or glands. Ultrastructural findings in these cases were similar to those of previously reported clear cell carcinomas of the ovary and endometrium, which seems to indicate a common Müllerian origin11, 16 as opposed to a mesonephric origin. 10 A transition between vaginal adenosis and the neoplasm was not observed.

Immunoperoxidase: a sensitive immunohistochemical technique as a "special stain" in the diagnostic pathology laboratory.

The present communication is a brief review of the origins, theory, and applications of a relatively new immunohistochemical technique that can be performed on routinely fixed, paraffin embedded tissues in which visualization by bright field light microscopy is feasible and which thus can be readily adapted to routine diagnostic work. The chief concern of this presentation is the practical diagnostic application of the immunoperoxidase technique, a method whose reputation as a sensitive investigative tool is well established.

Carcinoembryonic Antigen

Carcinoembryonic antigen: immunohistologic identification in invasive and intraepithelial carcinomas of the lung.

A total of 58 pulmonary lesions from 48 patients were examined for carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). The three-layer immunoperoxidase procedure for antigen detection was used with a monospecific anti-CEA antiserum. The control serum was the same antiserum with its specificity removed by affinity chromatography. Normal goat serum was also used as a control. Carcinoembryonic antigen was present in the majority of pulmonary adenocarcinomas and generally absent in the squamous cancers. The major exception was in the well-differentiated squamous lesions where CEA was occasionally found in the keratinizing areas. Of special interest was the finding of CEA in all areas of intraepithelial squamous neoplasia studied.

Adenocarcinoma

The lack of specificity of the sheep erythrocyte-T lymphocyte rosetting phenomenon.

One subpopulation of lymphocytes, thymus-derived (T) cells, is identified by its characteristic ability to form spontaneous rosettes with sheep erythrocytes (SRBC). However, the mechanism by which the rosettes form remains unknown. To gain more insight into the specificity of this phenomenon, the ability of SRBC to rosette with cells other thah lymphocytes was studied. All of the cell types utilized in this study (L cells, monkey liver cells, HeLa cells, and human liver, bladder, lung, parathyroid, and dermal fibroblasts), except neoplastic B lymphocytes, rosetted with SRBC. Viability was not a factor in the rosette formation. These findings suggest that the process of T lymphocyte-SRBC rosette formation is not due to a T cell-specific membrane receptor or antigen but may be due to a widely distributed basic substructure of the cell membrane.

Scanning and transmission electron microscopic studies of vaginal adenosis and the cervical transformation zone in progeny exposed in utero to diethylstilbestrol.

Much attention has recently been focused on vaginal adenosis and other cervical and vaginal alterations occurring in female offspring exposed to diethylstilbestrol (DES) in utero. These alterations consist of heterotopic glandular epithelium in the vagina, a characteristic cervical transformation zone, and the frequent presence of a cervical collar, or hood. It is believed that these changes occur during embryonic differentiation of the lower genital tract following failure of squamous epithelium to migrate in a cephalad direction to replace columnar epithelium which normally lines the vagina and ectocervix. A number of cases clear-cell carcinoma have occurred in DES-exposed girls who also had adenosis. In an attempt to characterize the cellular populations of these areas of adenosis, we have made an ultrastructural study which is herein reported.

Mucinous tumors of the ovary. II. Ultrastructural features of mucinous cystadenocarcinomas.

On the basis of light microscopic and scanning and transmission ultrastructural observations, ovarian mucinous tumors of borderline malignancy contain two types of mucinous epithelium--an endocervical type and an intestinal type. The fully malignant tumors were composed solely of intestinal-type epithelium. These findings may have prognostic and therapeutic significance.
