Localization and characterization of human salivary kininases.

The human saliva of normal subjects containing large amounts of basic carboxypeptidase produces decarboxylated non inflammatory peptides, for instance, kinins and anaphilotoxins C3a, C4a and C5a. A reduction of epithelial cell-bonded enzyme (carboxypeptidase M-type or kininase I), produces inflammations by the active intact kinins and the initiation of the alternative activating pathway of complement by active anaphilotoxins, which generate complement cleavage products, containing potential destructive mechanism.

Complement System Proteins

Copper-zinc superoxide dismutase in human and animal dental pulp.

The activity of the enzyme superoxide dismutase, scavenger of the superoxide anion (O2-.), was assayed in the normal dental pulp of man, dog, rabbit and pig. Very low levels of Cu-Zn-containing superoxide dismutase found in the pulpal tissue investigated support the hypothesis of a relationship between the reactivity of the dental pulp to inflammatory processes and a low protection against oxy-radicals.

Animals

Bone changes incident to blade-vent implants.

This research was undertaken to study the dynamics of bone changes in relation to endosseous blade-vent implants with vital labeling technique. Three mandibular premolars were bilaterally extracted in six two years old dogs. Subsequently each healed edentulous space was implanted with a titanium endosteal blade. One blade in each dog had the post extending into the mouth; the other had the post cut at the level of the neck and covered by the mucoperiosteal flap. The animals received I.V. Pyrrolidin-Methyl-Tetracycline and Alizarine Red S labelings at 15 and 30 days intervals. Dogs 1, 3 and 5 were sacrificed on the 97th day; dogs 2, 4 and 6 on the 52nd day. On ground sections of the mandibular bone which included the blades under U.V. light, it was observed that the implants were surrounded by remodeled trabecular bone of cancellous nature containing the labeling lines of Tetracycline (yellow) and Alizarine (red). The bone-metal interface consisted mainly of a thick layer of non mineralized tissue of about 70 micrometer. The labeling results showed that the new bone apposition began early (at least by the 15th day) and continued for a long time, being still present at the moment of the last injection (90th day). No difference was recognized between the bone responses to the implants jutting out and those submerged. This confirms that implant failure is mainly linked to irregular traumatism and inflammatory infiltration which occurs over a more prolonged duration.

Animals

[Dental pulp and dentin reaction to oxyphosphate cement].

Tetracycline labelling was employed to assess pulp and dentin reactivity to the use of oxyphosphate cement in the dog. A comparison was made of dentine conditions below control cavities and those containing the cement. In the former, the pulp and dentin response consisted of enhanced dentinogenesis, whereas in the latter this parameter showed no particular changes throughout the experimental period.

Animals

[The use of a bactericidal substance as medication in the indirect capping of healthy dentin].

An association of trimethoprim and sulphamethoxazol (Bactrim, Roche) was employed in the indirect capping of healthy teeth in the dog. Tetracycline labelling showed dentinogenesis in these teeth and comparison was made with the controls, A quantitative and qualitative change in dentinogenesis was noted below the control cavities. This alteration was less marked in Bactrim-treated teeth. It is deduced, therefore, that the operations involved in the preparation and filling of cavities in healthy teeth leads to pulp damage that can be partly prevented by using a bactericide.

[Glandular tumors of the middle ear: a case of primary ceruminous adenoma].

Primitive glandular neoplasms of the middle ear are a rare entity. Under this definition epithelial neoplasms are classified according to structure as adenomas or adenocarcinomas, with intact tympanic membrane. Review of the literature shows that four histopathological patterns can be identified among these neoplasms: adenoma, adenocarcinoma, ceruminous adenoma and ceruminous adenocarcinoma. The present work describes a case of primitive ceruminous adenoma of the middle ear (6 cases have been reported in the literature) discovered during exploratory tympanotomy performed on a presumed otitis media which had not responded to medical treatment. The case description is followed by a review of the literature on the subject. The rarity of such neoplasms arises from this review as well as the fact that the histogenesis of ceruminous neoplasms of the middle ear is not clearly defined. Further study is required and more reports need be made in order to establish the best therapeutic approach to such neoplasms. It is the authors' opinion that the term "ceruminoma" is a generic term and not a clear definition and that its use in labeling the most various neoplasms of the middle and external ear must be abandoned.
