The present study was designed to investigate the effects of neuraleptanesthesia (NLA) and enflurane (Ethane) anesthesia on plasma levels of growth hormone (GH) and prolactin (PRL) in man. A total of 18 patients aged between 20 and 65 years scheduled for elective open-heart surgery were divided in two groups. In the first group (9 patients) general anaesthesia was induced with sodium thiopental (TPS) (3-5 mg/kg) and was maintained with enflurane administered with an inspired concentration of 1.5% in nitrous oxide (2 litres/min) and oxygen (2 litres/min). In the second group (9 patients) anaesthesia was induced with dihydrobenzopyridol (BPS) (0.1-0.2 mg/kg), fentanyl (5-8 gamma/kg) and TPS (3-5 mg/kg) and was maintained with fentanyl (0,65 mg in average). The patients had neither hepatic, renal or endocrine disease nor did they have a history of steroid therapy. All subjects received atropine (0.01 mg/kg) and diazepam (0.2 mg/kg) i.m. 2 hours before induction of anaesthesia. Blood samples for GH and PRL was collected before induction of anaesthesia (0) and at 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes after induction: the 90' sample was taken immediately after sternal incision. The sampling was stopped at the start of the cardiopulmonary by-pass. A significative reduction of GH at 60' and of PRL at 30' was observed in both groups. Surgical stress at 90' does not evoke a significant increase of PRL and GH levels in both groups. In conclusion NLA and enflurane induced a decrease of GH and PRL plasma levels; in both groups the anaesthetic agents, at the dosage used during anaesthesia, blocked the response of these hormones to the surgical stress likely due to a block of the hypothalamic-pituitary response.

PURPOSE: This prospective clinical trial evaluated the clinical acceptability of a new material, ceromer, used for inlay and onlay restorations in single- or multisurface cavities of posterior teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-three Targis inlay and onlay restorations were placed in 25 patients and evaluated using the United States Public Health Service criteria. The laboratory work was conducted by three dental technicians according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Twenty-five restorations were luted with Syntac bonding system and Variolink II, and 18 were luted with Scotchbond Multi Purpose and Opal Luting Composite. The recalls were done at 6, 12, and 18 months. Restorations were evaluated for six parameters and scored as ideal (A), clinically acceptable (B), or clinically unacceptable (C). RESULTS: Indirect restorations received, after 18 months, scores of A at the following rates: color match 77%; marginal discoloration 93%; secondary caries 100%; anatomic form 93%; and marginal integrity 95%. For these parameters, statistical analysis indicated no significant differences at baseline and after 18 months. Postoperative hypersensitivity was reported by seven patients at baseline, but it decreased and there was no hypersensitivity at 12- and 18-month follow-ups. CONCLUSION: Over an 18-month period the Targis restorative system yielded good clinical service.
Anuria is a rare complication after prostate adenomectomy. Three cases of complete bilateral anuria and one case of monolateral anuria are reported following transvesical prostate adenomectomy, characterized by immediate onset without any apparent cause and by spontaneous resolution within 48 hours. After a thorough review of the literature, the authors analyze the pathophysiological and clinical aspects of post-prostate-adenomectomy anuria and postulate an "obstructive" aetiology for the anuria cases observed in their series.
Two methods were tested in order to determine the existence of in vitro antagonism among saprobic and pathogenic fungi. These microorganisms were the most common isolates from horticultural soils of La Plata (Buenos Aires). Trichoderma harzianum; T. koningii and Penicillium sp. were antagonistic to all the pathogenic fungi tested, Fusarium solani; F. oxysporum; Alternaria solani; Colletotrichum sp. and Sclerotium rolfsii Spicaria sp., Paecilomyces sp. and Chaetomiun sp. were antagonistic only to Colletotrichum sp. and Fusarium solani.
Anaesthetic procedures in surgical repair of meningomyelocele in pediatric patients with particular reference to the problems concerning the specific pathology and the newborn age are reported. Authors consider that surgical repair in the first days of life assures a lesser incidence of leptomeningeal infections and a better functional improvement without an important increase of the anaesthetic risk.
