Muscle size and cardiorespiratory response to exercise in cystic fibrosis.

The mechanism responsible for diminished exercise performance in cystic fibrosis (CF) is not clear. We hypothesized that reduced muscle size, rather than an intrinsic muscle defect, was the primary factor in such diminished exercise performance. Twenty-two subjects with CF (14 females and eight males, aged 6.5 to 17.7 yr, with FEV(1) of 46% to 111% predicted) participated in a study of this hypothesis, and were compared with healthy children tested in the same laboratory. Muscle size was estimated from midthigh muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) obtained by magnetic resonance imaging, and fitness was determined by progressive cycle ergometer exercise testing with breath-by-breath measurements of gas exchange. Peak oxygen consumption (V O(2)) was reduced in CF subjects (956 +/- 81 [mean +/- SEM] ml/min, as compared with 1,473 +/- 54 ml/min in controls; p < 0.00001). Surprisingly, CF subjects had a lower peak V O(2) per CSA (mean for CF subjects 70 +/- 3% predicted, p < 0.0001) than did controls, whereas muscle CSA in CF subjects was not significantly smaller than in controls. The scaling parameters of peak V O(2) and muscle CSA did not differ significantly between healthy controls (0.80 +/- 0.16) and CF subjects (1.03 +/- 0.12). Indexes of aerobic function that are less effort-dependent than peak V O(2) were also lower in the CF subjects (e.g., the slope of V O(2) versus work rate [WR] (DeltaV O(2)/DeltaWR) was 68 +/- 2% predicted; p < 0.005). The study data did not support the initial hypothesis, and suggest a muscle-related abnormality in oxygen metabolism in patients with CF.

Cloning and functional expression of the hNPY Y5 receptor in human endometrial cancer (HEC-1B) cells.

Aiming to develop a functional assay for the human NPY Y5 receptor based on adenylyl cyclase activity, HEC-1B cells, in which cAMP synthesis can be efficiently stimulated with forskolin, were selected for the transfection with the pcDNA3-Y5-FLAG and the pcDEF3-Y5 vectors. After optimization of the transfection procedure, the binding of [3H]propionyl-NPY to transiently and stably expressed Y5 receptors was determined. The affinities of NPY, NPY derivatives, and rPP (pNPY > or = p(Leu31Pro34)NPY = p(2-36)NPY > or = p(D-Trp32)NPY > p(13-36)NPY > rPP) were in accordance with the NPY Y5 receptor subtype. For [3H]propionyl-pNPY approximately 1.7 x 10(5) and 1 x 10(6) binding sites per transiently and stably transfected cell, respectively, were determined. The KD values were 2.4 +/- 0.4 and 1.7 +/-0.2 nM, respectively. Due to the high expression of the receptor protein, both stably and transiently transfected cells can be conveniently used in routine radioligand binding studies. By contrast, functional assays were only feasible with HEC-1B cells stably expressing the Y5 receptor. In these cells, 10 nM pNPY inhibited the forskolin-stimulated cAMP synthesis by 75%. This effect was partially antagonized by the Y5 antagonist N-¿trans-[4-(2-naphthylmethylamino)-methyl]cyclohexylmethyl) naphthalene-2-sulfonamide. Although the genetic variability of cancer cells is in principle incompatible with a stable phenotype, both ligand binding characteristics and functionality of the Y5 receptor remained unchanged for more than 30 passages.

Prospective analysis after coronary-artery bypass grafting: platelet GP IIIa polymorphism (HPA-1b/PIA2) is a risk factor for bypass occlusion, myocardial infarction, and death.

Recently, we have demonstrated that human platelet antigen 1b (HPA-1b or P1A2) is a hereditary risk factor for platelet thrombogenicity leading to premature myocardial infarction in preexisting coronary artery disease. However, HPA-lb does not represent a risk factor for coronary artery disease itself. The aim of our present study was to evaluate the role of HPA-lb on the outcome in patients after coronary-artery bypass surgery. We prospectively determined the HPA-1 genotype in 261 consecutive patients prior to saphenous-vein coronary-artery bypass grafting. The patients were followed for one year. Among patients with bypass occlusion, myocardial infarction, or death more than 30 days after surgery, the prevalence of HPA-lb was significantly higher than among patients without postoperative complications (60 percent, 6/10, vs. 24 percent, 58/241, p <0.05, odds ratio 4.7). Using a stepwise logistic regression analysis with the variables HPA-1b, age, sex, body mass index, smoking (pack-years), hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol and triglyceride concentration, only HPA-lb had a significant association with bypass occlusion, myocardial infarction, or death after bypass surgery (p = 0.019, odds ratio 4.7). This study shows that HPA-1b is a hereditary risk factor for bypass occlusion, myocardial infarction, or death in patients after coronary-artery bypass surgery.

Effects of Radix Angelicae sinensis and shuanghuanglian on a rat model of chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa pneumonia.

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of two kinds of Chinese herbal medicine, Radix angelicae sinensis (RAS) ([Chinese characters: see text]) and Shuanghuanglian (SHL) ([Chinese characters: see text]) on chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) lung infection in a rat model mimicking cystic fibrosis (CF). METHODS: Rats were divided into RAS, SHL and control groups. All rats were challenged intratracheally with alginate embedded PA and the treatments with herbal medicine started on the same day of challenge. The drugs were administered subcutaneously once a day for ten days and the control group was treated with sterile saline. The rats were sacrificed two weeks after challenge. RESULTS: Significantly improved lung bacterial clearance (P < 0.05, P < 0.01) and milder macroscopic lung pathology (P < 0.005) were found in the two treated groups compared to the control group. In the SH treated group, the neutrophil percent in the peripheral blood leukocytes (P < 0.05), the anti-PA IgG level in serum (P < 0.05), the incidence of lung abcesses (P < 0.005) and the incidence of acute lung inflammation (P < 0.05) were significantly lower than in the control group. The RAS treatment reduced fever (P < 0.05), decreased the incidence of lung abcesses (P < 0.005) and lung mast cell number (P < 0.05), and lowered anti-PA IgG1 level in serum (P < 0.05) when compared to the control group. The anti-PA bacterial activity test in SHL was weakly positive whereas in RAS it was negative. CONCLUSION: The treatment with both herbal medicines could increase the resistance of the rats against PA lung infection and they therefore might be potential promising drugs for stimulation of the immnune system in CF patients with chronic PA lung infection.

Pattern of mucosal adaptation in acute and chronic pouchitis.

PURPOSE: Variant pathological changes have been observed in ileoanal pouches, including inflammation, villous atrophy, and crypt hyperplasia. Therefore, we investigated the type and degree of mucosal adaptation in patients with ulcerative colitis and familial adenomatous polyposis. METHODS: Forty-two patients with ulcerative colitis and 14 patients with familial adenomatous polyposis with ileoanal pouches were assessed. Samples were taken from three months to eight years after creation of an ileoanal pouch. Mucosal architecture was examined by morphometry after microdissection. RESULTS: Structural changes of the mucosa can be categorized into three groups. Compared with preoperative values, patients without pouchitis (73 percent) has only minor decrease of villous length (402 microm vs. 540 microm) and increase in crypt depth (274.5 microm vs. 177 microm). In patients with acute pouchitis (20 percent), a slight increase in villous length (477 microm vs. 402 microm) and pronounced crypt hyperplasia (376 microm vs. 274.5 microm) was observed compared with noninflamed ileoanal pouches. In contrast, in patients with chronic pouchitis (7 percent), severe villous atrophy (62.5 microm) and crypt hyperplasia (543 microm) was found. CONCLUSIONS: Minor structural changes of ileoanal pouch mucosa develop early as an adaptive response to a new environment. Only in a small group of patients with chronic pouchitis does severe villous atrophy and crypt hyperplasia of the ileoanal pouch mucosa develop, most likely as a consequence of mucosal inflammation.

Comparative susceptibility to penicillin and quinolones of 1385 Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates. Austrian Bacterial Surveillance Network.

Antibiotic resistance among Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates has spread rapidly throughout the world since the first description of a strain with diminished susceptibility to penicillin in Australia in 1967. A total of 1385 strains of S. pneumoniae, collected in several centres throughout Austria, were assessed for their sensitivity to moxifloxacin, trovafloxacin, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, levofloxacin and lomefloxacin. The MICs were determined using the agar dilution method, according to NCCLS guidelines. Both moxlfloxacin and trovafloxacin showed good anti-pneumococcal activity in terms of MIC50 (both 0.125 mg/L) and MIC90 (both 0.25 mg/L). Less active, but with similar activity to each other, were ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin, each with an MIC50 of 1 mg/L and an MIC90 of 2 mg/L. Ofloxacin showed only moderate activity (MIC50, 1 mg/L; MIC90, 2 mg/L) and lomefloxacin was the least active compound (MIC50, 4 mg/L; MIC90, 8 mg/L). Both moxifloxacin and trovafloxacin at a concentration of < or = 0.5 mg/L inhibited all of the S. pneumoniae strains tested.

Palliative transhepatic biliary drainage and enteral nutrition.

Simultaneous intestinal and biliary obstruction is a rare but agonizing complication of metastatic abdominal cancer. Although endoscopic procedures exist that relieve jaundice or restore enteral nutrition, they can be impossible to perform for technical or anatomical reasons. We propose a palliative approach for these patients that includes transcutaneous common bile duct drainage, progressive dilation of the transhepatic channel over 1 wk, and, finally, insertion of a permanent silicon catheter that drains bile into the duodenum and is combined with an enteral feeding line. We report three patients whose metastatic abdominal tumors had led to simultaneous jaundice and gastric outlet obstruction, neither of which could be treated endoscopically. In all patients, the transcutaneous bile drainage catheter combined with the enteral feeding line was inserted and tumor symptoms resolved rapidly. As a result, the patients chose to return to home care with enteral nutrition and pain medication. The creation of a transhepatic access for simultaneous enteral bile drainage and nutrition is a technically simple procedure that causes little discomfort to a terminally ill patient. It relieves the symptoms of tumor obstruction, and the option of enteral nutrition and medication can obviate the need for intravenous infusions.

Early immune response in susceptible and resistant mice strains with chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa lung infection determines the type of T-helper cell response.

Most cystic fibrosis (CF) patients become chronically infected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa in the lungs. The infection is characterized by a pronounced antibody response and a persistant inflammation dominated by polymorphonuclear neutrophils. Moreover a high antibody response correlates with a poor prognosis. We speculated that a change from this Th2-like response to a Th1-like response might decrease the lung inflammation and thus improve the prognosis in CF patients. To investigate this, we infected C3H/HeN and BALB/c mice intratracheally with P. aeruginosa. In addition, we studied the early immune response leading to different Th responses. Mortality was lower in the C3H/HeN mice (p<0.005), they cleared the bacteria faster (day 3 p<0.01, day 7 p<0.02), had a milder lung inflammation (day 7 p<0.01, day 14 p< or =0.0005) and had a Th1-like IgG subclass switch. At day 3, the C3H/HeN mice produced less NO and TNF-alpha, (p<0.01 and p<0.03) and had the lowest IL-10/IL-12 ratio (p< or =0.05). At day 7, the C3H/HeN mice had the highest IFN-gamma (p<0.02), and the lowest IL-4 (p<0.02) production in the lungs. In conclusion, these results show that the Th1-reacting C3H/HeN mice with chronic P. aeruginosa lung infection have a better disease outcome compared to the Th2-reacting BALB/c mice, indicating that a Th1 response might be beneficial in CF patients with chronic P. aeruginosa lung infection.

Cytopathogenic and noncytopathogenic RNA replicons of classical swine fever virus.

To determine the minimal requirements for autonomous RNA replication of classical swine fever virus (CSFV), genomes having in-frame deletions within the genes for structural and flanking nonstructural proteins were constructed, based on an infectious cDNA clone of CSFV Alfort/187. RNA was transcribed in vitro from the respective plasmids and transfected into SK-6 swine kidney cells. The replication competence of the RNA was determined by immunostaining transfected cells for CSFV NS3 protein and by analysis of cell extracts for viral RNA, as well as protein synthesis at different times after transfection. The genes encoding N(pro), C, E(rns), E1, E2, p7, and NS2 proved to be dispensable for RNA replication, but the efficiency of replication varied strongly between individual constructs. RNA replicons containing the complete NS2-NS3 gene persisted in transfected cells and continued to replicate without causing any obvious morphological or functional damage to the cells, whereas genomes lacking the NS2 gene replicated more efficiently and induced a cytopathic effect. These findings suggest that NS2, although it is not essential for pestivirus RNA replication, has a regulatory function therein. Both cytopathogenic and noncytopathogenic replicons were packaged into virus particles provided in trans by a cotransfected full-length helper virus genome.

Acute dermatitis from oak processionary caterpillars in a U.S. military community in Germany.

One hundred sixty-five soldiers and civilians from the U.S. military community in Heidelberg, Germany, sought treatment for acute dermatitis from June 26 through July 2, 1995. This was 144 more than the expected number of 21 cases based on a background rate of 3 cases per day. Cases consisted of individuals who presented with a painful, itching rash distributed widely about the body but concentrated in the upper half. Urticarial hairs from oak processionary caterpillars (Thaumetopoea processionea L.) (Lepidoptera: Thaumetopoeidae) were eventually identified as the cause. This article is the first published report that documents the military medical importance of these caterpillars in Europe. The implications and measures needed to resolve future outbreaks quickly and effectively are discussed.

NPY Y1 antagonists: structure-activity relationships of arginine derivatives and hybrid compounds with arpromidine-like partial structures.

Previously, omega-guanidino- and omega-aminoalkanamides, structurally derived from arpromidine-like histamine H2 receptor agonists, were reported as novel neuropeptide Y Y1 antagonists. Regardless of the backbone, they resemble BIBP 3226, an argininamide with high NPY Y1 receptor affinity and selectivity, with respect to nature and arrangement of the 'terminal' diaryl, guanidine, and hydroxyphenyl groups. Hybrid compounds were synthesized combining the argininamide backbone of BIBP 3226 or partial structures derived from the C-terminal dipeptide of NPY with characteristic substructures of arpromidine- or amide-type NPY antagonists. Additionally, some analogs of BIBP 3226 with reduced flexibility were prepared. Structure-activity relationships indicate that, in contrast to alkanamides, homologs and/or isomers of BIBP 3226 with vicinal arrangement of the phenyl rings have decreased Y1 antagonistic activity (Ca2+-assay in HEL cells). Replacement of the hydroxybenzyl group by an imidazole ring further decreases activity. It is concluded that the binding sites of NPY antagonists with one and with two basic groups are not identical. Analogs with a rigid tetrahydro-2-benzazepine or an indan group in place of the benzyl moiety in BIBP 3226 are active, indicating the role of the OH group and supporting the model proposed for the interaction of BIBP 3226 with the Y1 receptor.

[Familial giant hemangiomas of the liver. Study of a family and review of the literature].

In this report we present for the first time strong evidence for autosomal-dominant inheritance of grant liver hemangiomas. Furthermore, we review the current literature about incidence, pathogenesis, clinics, as well as diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of LH. A large family of Italian origin is described where three female patients in three successive generations suffered from large symptomatic LH. In addition, two other female relatives exhibited asymptomatic LH on sonographic scans. The restriction of the disease to the female gender could be explained by a sex-dependent difference in penetrance or expressivity of a presumable "liver-hemangioma" gene, or by known proliferative factors such as female sex hormones. We also observed an increased incidence of adenomas of the thyroidea among members with or without LH of the presented family. This uncommon familial association has also not yet been described and its genetic aspects are discussed.

[Changes in fluid filtration capacity and blood flow after tourniquet in knee operations with spinal anesthesia].

UNLABELLED: An increased microvascular water permeability has been reported after ischemia/reperfusion both in animal models and in human studies. We studied the changes in fluid filtration capacity (FFK) after ischemia/reperfusion due to tourniquet in patients undergoing arthroscopy of the knee. METHOD: Healthy male volunteers (n = 24, mean age 46.9 +/- 3.5) were studied prior to, 1 and 6 hours after arthroscopy of the knee, during which a tourniquet was applied to the thigh. FFK, isovolumetric venous pressure (Pvi) and arterial blood flow in the limb was measured in both legs (tourniquet leg and control leg) using computer assisted venous congestion plethysmography. Venous blood samples were obtained from a cubital vein prior to and from the femoral vein 2 mins after deflation of the tourniquet cuff. 12 patients received preoperatively an infusion of 6% Dextran (D) and 12 patients 500 ml of electrolyte solution (VE) an. RESULTS: The mean duration of the tourniquet was (D) 56.0 +/- 6.9 min and (VE) 53.9 +/- 4.2 min which resulted in a significant increase in venous lactate concentration from (D) 1.4 +/- 0.1 mmol.l-1 to 2.7 +/- 0.3 mmol.l-1 and (VE) 1.3 +/- 0.1 mmol.l-1 to 2.7 +/- 0.3 mmol.l-1 (p < 0.001). A significant decrease in pH from (D) 7.39 +/- 0.01 to 7.32 +/- 0.01 (p < 0.001) and from (VE) 7.39 +/- 0.01 to 7.32 +/- 0.01 (p < 0.001) was also seen. Preoperatively no significant differences in the FFK values of the tourniquet leg (D = 5.3 (4.8-10.7) ml. x 10(-3) min-1.100 ml tissue-1 mmHg-1 = FFKU) and the control leg (5.2 (4.7-8.6 FFKU)) were observed. The maximum FFK value in D was seen 1 hour after ischemia/reperfusion in both, the tourniquet leg (7.5 (4.6-14.2 FFKU) and the control leg (7.8 (5.5-9.4 FFKU). In VE however the maximal FFK value were measured 6 hours after ischemia/reperfusion with an increase in the tourniquet leg from 5.2 (4.2-6.2 FFKU) to 8.1 (3.7-10.4 FFKU) and the control leg from 6.1 (3.6-7.0 FFKU) to 7.3 (6.1-8.3 FFKU) (Median (Range). One-way ANOVA). There were no significant differences in the FFK values between D and VE except for a lower Pvi in VE at the third measurement. No significant changes in the arterial blood flow were seen perioperatively as well as between the operated and non-operated leg. CONCLUSION: A tourniquet of < 1 hour does impair tissue oxygenation as indicated by the increase in lactate and the decrease in pH. The duration of the tourniquet was however to short to have caused sufficient microvascular damage result in a more pronounced increase in fluid filtration capacity.

Antibodies to urinary tract pathogens in patients with spinal cord lesions.

Chronic or recurrent urinary tract infection (UTI) is a significant problem or patients with spinal cord lesions (SCL). UTIs are thought to be a major factor in the development of reduced renal function. To investigate the pathogenesis 151 patients with SCL were included in this study during a 7 year period. Results of intravenous pyelography and isotope renography were recorded as well as the bladder emptying methods. One to seven blood samples were obtained from each patient and tested for plasma creatinine, and the presence of precipitating antibodies against Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, Klebsiella ozaenae, Proteus mirabilis, Enterococcus faecalis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. We found significant correlation between duration of SCL and precipitating antibodies against urinary tract pathogens (PAU) (r = 0.23, P < 0.005), between plasma creatinine and PAU in patients with spina bifida (r = 0.64, P < 0.01), between PAU and the number of positive urine cultures (r = 0.17; P < 0.05) and a relation between abnormal urological findings and PAU. In addition, the PAU was significantly higher in patients with indwelling urethral catheters (P < 0.001). Thus it seems that PAU can be of prognostic value in SCL patients, and PAU might be an indicator for intensified treatment of recurrent UTI.

Esophageal involvement in cicatricial pemphigoid.

We report on a 17-year-old male patient with dysphagia, cachexia, and physical underdevelopment. Despite a known esophageal stenosis, the patient received several months of psychiatric treatment, which failed to improve the clinical picture. After systematic diagnostic procedures, including repeated biopsies of the esophageal stenosis, a cicatricial pemphigoid was diagnosed and adequate therapy could be initiated.

Porcine cells persistently infected with classical swine fever virus protected from pestivirus-induced cytopathic effect.

Cytopathogenicity of classical swine fever virus (CSFV) depends on the presence of defective particles containing a subgenomic (sg) RNA with a defined deletion. In a previous report we described the spontaneous generation of this sg RNA and therefore of cytopathogenic (cp) CSFV in porcine kidney cell cultures persistently infected with CSFV. Frequently, some cells survived the CPE and could be further propagated. They remained positive for viral antigen and continued to shed complete virus and in most cases also defective virus particles. SK-6 cells that had survived the CPE (CPE(surv)cells) were used to investigate these findings further. In contrast to persistently infected cells that had not experienced a CPE, CPE(surv) cells were protected from the CPE when superinfected with cp CSFV or with cp bovine viral diarrhoea virus. Similarly, cells which were rescued and further propagated after acute infection with cp CSFV also proved to be protected from the CSFV-induced CPE. When either virus obtained from CPE(surv) cells that had spontaneously lost the sg RNA or virus from which defective particles had been removed was used to establish persistently infected cells, these cells were also protected from the CPE after superinfection with cp CSFV. These findings suggest that the virus contained in CPE(surv) cells confers on the host cell the ability to resist the CSFV-induced CPE. However, when naive cells were infected with supernatants from CPE(surv)cells that contained defective virus particles, the CPE reappeared within three to five virus passages, indicating that the sg RNA retained its cytopathogenic potential.

Soluble CD44 and CD44v6 serum levels in patients with colorectal cancer are independent of tumor stage and tissue expression of CD44v6.

OBJECTIVES: Tissue overexpression of CD44 variants, especially CD44v6, and elevated serum concentrations of soluble CD44 variants (sCD44) have been demonstrated in patients with colorectal cancer and several other tumors. Our aim was to evaluate the clinical value of their measurement in colorectal cancer. METHODS: To examine the suitability of sCD44 and sCD44v6 as tumor markers in colorectal cancer these parameters were analyzed in serum of patients with colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, chronic renal failure, and controls. Tissue expression of CD44v6 in colorectal carcinomas was investigated by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). RESULTS: sCD44 and sCD44v6 levels were significantly elevated in most of the patient groups (medians, sCD44: 330-709 ng/ml; sCD44v6: 125-160 ng/ml) compared to controls (sCD44: 346 ng/ml; sCD44v6: 106.5 ng/ml). No difference was seen between colorectal cancer patients of different UICC (Union Internationale Contre le Cancer) stages and between patients with CD44v6-positive or -negative primary tumors. CONCLUSIONS: sCD44 and sCD44v6 concentrations showed no correlation to tumor burden or CD44v6 tissue expression. Sensitivity and specificity were low, compared to CEA. Therefore, in our view sCD44 and sCD44v6 measurement in screening or follow-up of patients with colorectal cancer is of very little clinical value.

Effects of ginseng treatment on neutrophil chemiluminescence and immunoglobulin G subclasses in a rat model of chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa pneumonia.

Chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa lung infection in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients is almost impossible to eradicate with antibiotic treatment. In the present study, the effects of treatment with the Chinese herbal medicine ginseng on blood polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) chemiluminescence and serum specific antibody responses were studied in a rat model of chronic P. aeruginosa pneumonia mimicking CF. An aqueous extract of ginseng was administered by subcutaneous injection at a dosage of 25 mg/kg of body weight/day for 2 weeks. Saline was used as a control. Two weeks after the start of ginseng treatment, significantly increased PMN chemiluminescence (P </= 0. 001) and a decreased level in serum of immunoglobulin G (IgG) against P. aeruginosa (P < 0.05) were found. Furthermore, a higher IgG2a level (P < 0.04) but lower IgG1 level (P < 0.04) were found in the ginseng-treated infected group than in the control group. In the ginseng-treated group the macroscopic lung pathology was milder (P = 0.0003) and the percent PMNs in the cells collected by bronchoalveolar lavage was lower (P = 0.0006) than in the control group. However, the alveolar macrophage (AM) chemiluminescence values were not significantly different in the two groups infected with P. aeruginosa. The differences between the ginseng-treated noninfected rats and the control group (without P. aeruginosa lung infection) for the PMN chemiluminescence and AM chemiluminescence were not significant. These results suggest that ginseng treatment leads to an activation of PMNs and modulation of the IgG response to P. aeruginosa, enhancing the bacterial clearance and thereby reducing the formation of immune complexes, resulting in a milder lung pathology. The changes in IgG1 and IgG2a subclasses indicate a possible shift from a Th-2-like to a Th-1-like response. These findings indicate that the therapeutic effects of ginseng may be related to activation of a Th-1 type of cellular immunity and down-regulation of humoral immunity.
