Acute diuretic effects in conscious rats produced by some medicinal plants used in the state of São Paulo, Brasil.

Extracts of 32 medicinal plants used popularly for their presumed diuretic and/or antihypertensive properties were tested for diuretic effects in conscious unrestrained rats. Extracts were made using aqueous ethanol (50:50, v/v) at 4-10 degrees C. When given orally at a dose of 40 ml/kg, a majority of the ethanol-free extracts produced a more pronounced diuresis than would be expected from the potassium concentration of the extracts. The most significant diuretic effect was observed with Hedychium coronarium sheath and leaf-blade extracts.

Effect of thioridazine on phenytoin serum concentration: a retrospective study.

Serum phenytoin concentrations before and after the addition of thioridazine were retrospectively compared in 27 adults to determine if an interaction occurred between these two drugs. A change in the serum phenytoin concentration of +/- 4 micrograms/ml was considered clinically significant; by this definition four patients (14.8 percent) had an increase, two (7.4 percent) had a decrease, and most (77.8 percent) demonstrated no change. The mean difference was 0.8 microgram/ml +/- 3.7 micrograms/ml and was not found to be statistically significant (p less than 0.1). Clinically important alterations in phenytoin serum concentration as caused by thioridazine appear to be infrequent.

Controlled comparison of trebenzomine with doxepin as an antidepressant-anxiolytic.

Trebenzomine, a new psychotropic drug, was compared with doxepin in the treatment of anxiety and depression. The study was a three-week, double-blind trial involving 26 psychoneurotic inpatients. Multiple ratings by physician, nurse, and patient all concurred that the 2 drugs produced significant improvement in both depressive and anxious symptomatology. No significant differences were found between the 2 drugs either in terms of rate or degree of improvement or incidence of side effects. Further investigation of trebenzomine for anxious depression is warranted.
