[Children's eating habits at breakfast and snacks between meals (author's transl)].

Detailed inquiries into the eating habits of 86 children attending schools and kindergartens was carried out and a nut-nougat cream spread was evaluated in a 14-day investigation. The selection of food for the snacks requires some correction according to these results e. g. for salt biscuits, sweets, soft drinks. 22% of the parents still compel their children to eat everything up, more than 1/3 leave the purchase of snacks to the children. The nut-nougat cream enjoys enormous popularity as a spread for bread so that even large food undertakings cannot face this development with equanimity. From the nutritional physiology aspect this product is only to be considered positively if spreading of any fat under it can be avoided -- a question of explanation and education, because only then will a superfluity of calories be prevented.

[Myocardial infarct patients with and without intensive nutrition consultation over several years-- comparison of physiological and social variables].

After three years of experience with change of nutrition in 300 infarction patients of the Höhenried long-term study (150 patients with intensive change of nutrition and 150 patients serving as control group) and 50 randomized study participants from the control group, the following results could be found: 1. In infarction patients, who underwent rehabilitation and follow-up examinations (group with change of nutrition), the increase of the P/S quotient causes no serum cholesterol and serum triglyceride decrease compared with the control group. 2. Alcohol and nicotine consumption cannot be further decreased by intensive nutrition consultation compared with the lasting effect of the comprehensive care. 3. As well, no further weight reduction (no less than the patient obtained during the rehabilitation phase) can be attained in the "nutrition change" and the control group. 4. From the "nutrition change" group more patients took up work again after the infarction compared with the control group, although age and social status are identical in both groups. These results are contradictory to nearly all other studies. We explain this difference by the fact that both groups were under comprehensive care. The care of the patient is a very decisive factor, which is the reason for keeping low the mentioned risk factors.

Reciprocal translocations and partial correlation of chromosomes in the stable fly.

An initial investigation of the genetics of the stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans (L.), is described. Two recessive, autosomal mutants, carmine eye (ca) and rolled down wing (rd), were assigned to chromosomes 2 and 4, respectively. Sex is apparently determined by a locus on chromosome 1. Crossing over is restricted to females. Six reciprocal translocations were induced with gamma radiation and used to assign ca and rd to their respective chromosomes.
