A case of sebaceous cell adenoma of the buccal mucosa in a 65-yr-old woman is described. The patient exhibited no manifestations of Torre's syndrome (cutaneous sebaceous neoplasms and visceral carcinomas). Only four sebaceous adenomas of the oral mucosa have been previously reported. The literature on neoplasms of sebaceous glands and Torre's syndrome is reviewed. The tumour had not recurred 18 months after surgical excision.
Old NZC/Bl mice have a high incidence (33%) of unilateral spontaneous granulosa cell tumours. A single topical application of 300 micrograms of 7, 12-dimethylbenz(a) anthracene (DMBA) to the skin at 6 wk of age substantially enhanced the incidence of granulosa cell tumours (95%), a high proportion of which were bilateral. Lesions were detected at a much younger age than in mice not exposed to the carcinogen. Endometrial changes were observed frequently, irrespective of DMBA treatment, and with or without granulosa cell tumours. These observations suggest that the incidence of endometrial hyperplasia, albeit substantially increased by DMBA treatment, is not necessarily dependent on granulosa cell tumour hormonal activity. Telangiectasia, principally affecting vessels in the ovary, uterus and small intestine, was a common finding in DMBA treated mice.
A case of regional odontodysplasia is reported. An unusual feature, only twice previously described in the world literature of fifty-four cases, was the presence of an apparently normal tooth within the group of affectd teeth. The implications of such a finding for the various theories relating to aetiology and pathogenesis are discussed.
Osteosarcomas occurring in untreated and paraffin-treated NZBR/BI mice are described. Tumour tissue from one paraffin-treated animal was propagated by subcutaneous transplantation into young syngeneic male mice and the growth pattern and histological appearance of successive transplants were studied. The ability to form bone was retained and a propensity for metastasis to the lungs was observed. The latent period between the time of transplantation and clinical evidence of tumour formation diminished as passaging proceeded but there was no enhancement of the transplantability of osteosarcomas. The incidence of osteosarcomas in NZBR/BI mice is compared with that observed in other strains of mice.
