Optical switching and contrast enhancement in intense laser systems by cascaded optical parametric amplification.

Optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA) can be used to improve the prepulse contrast in chirped-pulse amplification systems by amplifying the main pulse with a total saturated OPCPA gain, while not affecting the preceding prepulses of the seed oscillator mode-locked pulse train. We show that a simple modification of a multistage OPCPA system into a cascaded optical parametric amplifier (COPA) results in an optical switch and extreme contrast enhancement that can completely eliminate the preceding and trailing oscillator pulses. Instrument-limited measurement of a prepulse contrast ratio of 1.4 x 10(11) is demonstrated from COPA at a 30 mJ level.

Diffraction grating eigenvector for translational and rotational motion.

Future energy scaling of high-energy chirped-pulse amplification systems will benefit from the capability to coherently tile diffraction gratings into larger apertures. Design and operation of a novel, accurate alignment diagnostic for coherently tiled diffraction gratings is required for successful implementation of this technique. An invariant diffraction direction and phase for special moves of a diffraction grating is discussed, allowing simplification in the design of the coherently tiled grating diagnostic. An analytical proof of the existence of a unique diffraction grating eigenvector for translational and rotational motion that conserves the diffraction direction and diffracted wave phase is presented.

Generation of high-contrast millijoule pulses by optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification in periodically poled KTiOPO4.

A new high-contrast, high-gain optical parametric chirped-pulse amplifier (OPCPA) architecture is demonstrated in periodically poled KTiOPO4 (PPKTP). This architecture overcomes parametric fluorescence contrast limitations of the OPCPA in periodically poled materials. The scheme is based on two passes of a single relay-imaged pump pulse and a free-propagating signal pulse through a 1.5 mm x 5 mm x 7.5 mm PPKTP crystal. The output energy of 1.2 mJ is generated at a center wavelength of 1053 nm by 24 mJ of pump energy. A prepulse contrast level of > 3 x 10(7) was measured with > 10(6) saturated gain in the amplifier. Amplified pulses were compressed to 200 fs. This simple and versatile concept requires only a modest pump energy from a commercial pump laser and represents a possible high-contrast front end for high-energy Nd:glass-based petawatt-class lasers.

Two-color chirped-pulse amplification in an ultrabroadband Ti:sapphire ring regenerative amplifier.

We have developed a high-energy, ultrabroadband Ti:sapphire ring regenerative amplifier capable of producing in excess of 20-mJ output at a 10-Hz repetition rate. The technique of chirped-pulse amplification is used to generate two-color, time-synchronized pulses with central wavelength separations of up to approximately 120 nm and with a total energy of 10 mJ by use of a regenerative pulse-shaping technique. Mid-infrared pulses tunable from 6 to 11 microm are generated by difference frequency mixing the two-color outputs.
