Effect of follicle stimulating hormone on the testes of Puntius ticto (Ham.).

Histomorphological study of the testes reveals that 0.2 mg and 0.4 mg of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) do not show any marked effect on the spermatogenesis of Puntius ticto except that the production of primary germ cells and primary spermatogonia is slightly stimulated. A dose of 0.6 mg of FSH initiates the formation of primary spermatocytes, and with 0.8 mg the secondary spermatocytes and spermatids appear. With 1.0 mg of FSH the testes attain full maturation. By an administration of a further dose of 0.2 mg of FSH the commencement of oozing is initiated. Each addition of 0.2 mg of FSH from now onwards up to 2.0 mg gradually increases the number of primary germ cells and primary spermatogonia and decreases the number of spermatozoa which reveals uninterrupted oozing of the latter.

Effect of follicle stimulating hormone on female Catla catla (Ham.).

The exogenously administered FSH in Catla catla clearly reveals that a dose of 0.2 mg and 0.4 mg of FSH does not have any marked effect on the ovary, but the vitellogenesis begins with a further dose of 0.2 mg of the same. A rapid accumulation of yolk is recorded in the primary oocytes with a total dose of 0.8 mg of FSH, however, this much hormone is not enough for the spawning. The latter has been recorded with 1.0 mg of FSH which swifts with a dose of 1.2 mg of FSH. The number of mature follicle declines with 1.4 mg of FSH whereas no empty follicle is seen with the same treatment. With each addition of 0.2 mg of FSH upto 2.0 mg the number of oogonia and primary oocytes increases while maturing and mature follicles show a downward tendency.

Studies on the oogonial cycle in Puntius ticto (Ham.) III. Formation of degenerated follicles.

In Puntius ticto, the atresia has been observed both in mature and empty follicles. In empty follicles, theca becomes highly vascularized and the granulosa layer hypotrophied. The later invades into the lumen of the empty follicle and finally disappears. In yolk laden follicles, both theca and granulosa show hypertrophy in their cells. The granulosa becomes multilayered and finally starts digesting yolk globules after liquefying it.

Effect of luteinizing hormone on female Puntius ticto (Ham.).

Low doses (0.2 mg and 0.4 mg) of LH did not reveal any effect on the ovary of Puntius ticto (Ham.), but with 0.6 mg of LH the vitellogenesis began. Full maturation in the ovary was recorded with a total dose of 1.2 mg of LH and the fish spawned with a dose of 1.4 mg of LH.

Studies on the oogonial cycle in Puntius ticto (Ham.) II. Formation of mature follicles.

During the formation of maturing oocyte and mature follicle most of the changes are observed in the ooplasm while nucleus gets reduced in size and finally vanishes in the ooplasm. Few of the nuclei migrate into the ooplasm (yolk nucleus) which is responsible for the yolk accumulation. The mature follicle is covered by the theca, granulosa and zona rediata.

Studies on the oogonial cycle in Puntius ticto (Ham.) I. Formation of primary oocytes.

Histologically, the ovary of Puntius ticto (Ham.) is covered with three layers, namely peritoneum, tunica albuginea and germinal epithelium. The last two give rise to the ovigerous nests in the ovocoel. The new crop of oocytes is either derived from the germ cells present in the ovigerous nests, or from the epithelium of the outer wall of the ovary, or from the epithelium of the ovigerous folds.
