Independent temporal and pitch structures in determination of musical phrases.

In two experiments we addressed the roles of temporal and pitch structures in judgments of melodic phrases. Musical excerpts were rated on how good or complete a phrase they made. In Experiment 1, trials in the temporal condition retained the original temporal pattern but were equitonal; trials in the pitch condition retained the original pitch pattern but were equitemporal; and trials in the melody condition contained both temporal and pitch patterns. In Experiment 2, one pattern (pitch or temporal) was shifted in phase and recombined with the other pattern to create the pitch and temporal conditions. In the melody condition, both patterns were shifted together. In both experiments, ratings in the temporal and pitch conditions were uncorrelated, and the melody condition ratings were accurately predicted by a linear combination of the pitch and temporal condition ratings. These results were consistent across musicians with varying levels of experience.

The New Mexico Melanoma Registry. A model of a statewide cooperative program.

The prevalence of cutaneous melanoma is high among Anglo residents of New Mexico. In order to achieve consistency in diagnosis and pathologic staging, a melanoma registry was established in 1980 in conjunction with the University of New Mexico Cancer Center. The registry functions through pathology panel review of newly diagnosed melanomas combined with collection of clinical data. Reports are submitted gratis to contributing pathologists and dermatologists. The melanoma registry works closely with the population-based New Mexico Tumor Registry. Acceptance of the melanoma registry has been excellent. We believe that in excess of 90% of new melanoma cases in the state are sent spontaneously to the registry. During 1986 approximately 150 melanomas were reviewed together with 450 atypical, benign pigmented lesions such as dysplastic nevi. In addition to pathology consultations, the registry serves an educational function and has potential for a variety of epidemiologic studies.

Klinefelter's syndrome associated with mediastinal germ cell neoplasms.

Several case reports have suggested an association of primary mediastinal germ cell tumor (PMGCT) and Klinefelter's syndrome (KS). In an effort to confirm this association, 22 patients with mediastinal germ cell tumors had chromosome studies performed in a prospective fashion. Five patients (22%) had karyotypic or pathologic evidence of KS. All of the patients with KS had germ cell tumors of the nonseminomatous subtype and were relatively young (median age, 15 years). The literature confirms the findings of a young median age (18 years), nonseminomatous subtype, and mediastinal location of the germ cell neoplasm. We conclude that patients with KS are predisposed to the development of mediastinal nonseminomatous germ cell cancers.

DNA linkage analysis of X chromosome-linked chronic granulomatous disease.

Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is a disorder of phagocytes that is usually inherited as an X chromosome-linked trait. Previous family studies suggested that the CGD locus resides on the distal short arm (Xp22-Xpter). Using cloned, polymorphic DNA probes we have performed a linkage analysis within CGD families that suggests a more proximal location (Xp21). In addition, the CGD locus is proximal to the Duchenne muscular dystrophy locus and lies within a broad region of Xp in which recombination appears to be greater than anticipated on the basis of physical distance between markers. Regional localization of the X chromosome CGD locus should facilitate molecular cloning of the CGD gene and molecular dissection of the phagocyte oxidase system.

Parents and grandparents view the autistic child.

Mothers, fathers, grandmothers, and grandfathers of 19 autistic children completed a questionnaire describing their view of the handicapped child, the impact of the child on the parent, and the relationship between the parents and grandparents. Paired t tests revealed that whenever there was a significant difference between the generations, grandparents took a more positive view. For example, maternal grandmothers had a more positive view of the child than did their daughters, and paternal grandmothers had a more positive view of their relationship with their son than did the son. Grandmothers demonstrated an empathic understanding of their daughter's experiences. There was a significant Pearson product-moment correlation between grandmothers and grandfathers in overall scores, their view of the child, and how they viewed their son's or daughter's experiences as the parent of a handicapped child. Maternal grandparents visited the family significantly more often than paternal grandparents. The study offers us a first empirical look at grandparents and their autistic grandchild.

Smooth pursuit of small-amplitude sinusoidal motion.

Subjects used smooth eye movements to track small-amplitude sinusoidal target motions. Target frequencies (0.05 to 5 Hz) and amplitudes (1.9 to 30 min of arc) were in the range of those found in the retinal image during fixation of a stationary target while the head is not artificially supported. Smooth pursuit was poor at high target frequencies in several ways: Large uncompensated drifts were observed for target frequencies between 1 and 4 Hz. The drifts were superimposed upon oscillations of the eye in response to the target motion. Mean retinal-image speeds were higher than retinal-image speeds during slow control (smooth eye movements with stationary targets) for target frequencies above 0.5 Hz. Mean retinal-image speeds were as high as target speed for target frequencies above 3 Hz. The ratio of eye speed to target speed decreased as target frequency and amplitude increased. The dependence on amplitude could be reduced and often eliminated by computing an adjusted ratio in which a constant (approximately equal to the mean speed of slow control) was subtracted from eye speed before dividing by target speed. Adjusted ratios declined for frequencies above 0.5 to 1 Hz and did not depend on amplitude. These results show that the response of the smooth-pursuit subsystem to target motion above 0.5 Hz is poor, even though the velocity and the acceleration of th motions are low. Models of smooth pursuit in which the response of the eye depends exclusively on the velocity, acceleration, or position of the target do not account for our results.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Prolactin response to the cold pressor test in patients with panic attacks.

Recent advances in psychiatric nosology have provided a clearer clinical description of panic disorder and agoraphobia with panic attacks. This clinical improvement has yet to result in a better understanding of the basic mechanisms involved in these conditions. The present study compares the effects of the cold pressor test on blood pressure changes and prolactin levels in patients with panic disorder and agoraphobia with panic attacks to its effects in normal controls. Because the effects of the cold pressor test were similar in patients and normal controls, it appears that alpha-adrenergic function is normal in the patient group. The results also suggest that prolactin hypersecretion does not occur in pathological anxiety states.

The dexamethasone suppression test in patients with alcoholism.

It is unknown whether the dexamethasone suppression test (DST) can be used to help identify patients with major depressive disorder if they have recently been abusing alcohol. We evaluated 38 male alcoholics with Research Diagnostic Criteria (RDC), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and the standardized overnight 1-mg DST, administered after 3-4 weeks of detoxification. Eighty-two percent had a normal suppressive DST response. The DST may be useful in aiding identification of patients with a profile of major depressive disorder and continued depression after alcohol detoxification. The test might facilitate a rational selection of alcoholics who may benefit from antidepressants. However, the possibility of false positive results must be further investigated.

Corticospinal and corticorubral projections from the supplementary motor area in the monkey.

Neurons that were antidromically invaded from either pyramidal tract (PT) stimulation or red nucleus (RN) stimulation were studied in the anterior portion of the supplementary motor cortex of anaesthetized rhesus monkeys. The conduction velocity of 58 PT neurons ranged from 11 to 63 m/sec while those of the 29 RN neurons ranged from 10 to 38 m/sec. None of the neurons were found to be antidromically invaded from both stimulation sites. Thus, the corticorubral projection from the SMA does not appear to consist primarily of PT axon collaterals. There appeared to be a trend towards spatial segregation of the PT and RN neurons in the monkey cortex, the RN neurons tended to be located nearer the pial surface than the PT neurons, which tend to have somata nearer the subcortical white matter.

The influence of neonatal orchiopexy upon the testis in persistent Müllerian duct syndrome.

We report on a patient with persistent müllerian duct syndrome and normal external genitalia who had embryonal cancer of the testis 16 years after neonatal bilateral orchiopexy. In previous cases the testes of these patients have not been considered predisposed to form tumors. However, the occurrence of a testis tumor has been reported in 8 patients with this syndrome. The specific factors resulting in tumor formation in such patients are uncertain. Until they are clarified we suggest that these patients should be observed carefully for the possible development of testis tumor.
