Posture in basketball players.

Static and dynamic posturography was recorded in eleven professional national basketball players (complete team). This sport requires balance and skill and is practiced by tall subjects (average height: 197 cm) with a history of 10 to 15 tibio-tarsal sprains. In static tests, with eyes open or closed, the way was similar between controls and players, while the area was increased for the latter. Area increment could be related to the history of ankle trauma reported by these subjects. In toes up dynamic tests, the latency of the first response (short latency response-myotatic reflex) was shorter in players. Data provided by national charts were used to compare posturography performance and player's skill. The best player who also ranks high in the national chart, has distinctive results in static posturography, with almost no difference when the test is performed with closed eyes.

[Intra-thyroid metastasis of a colonic carcinoma (author's transl)].

The authors report the case of a 58-year-old woman suffering from an intra-thyroid metastasis of a carcinoma of the colon for which she had undergone surgery two and a half years previously. This adenocarcinoma was, furthermore, clinically and radiologically "cured". The metastasis was accompanied by a cervical swelling and paralysis of the left recurrent laryngeal nerve, the reason for the consultation. Subsequent examinations revealed multiple lung metastases. Despite combined treatment with radiotherapy and chemotherapy, there was later development of further multiple metastases, in particular cerebral. The authors review the literature concerning this type of tumour. Particular emphasis is placed upon tumours with a high malignant potential, such as the naevo-carcinoma, together with tumours of neighbouring structures, in particular the upper airway and digestive tract, all of which may spread to the thyroid. There have nevertheless been other cases of thyroid metastasis of a carcinoma of the colon. One of the very first was that of Rankin and Fortune, published in 1936.

A nasal functional test: the opeining of mouth during physical effort.

Apart from rare exceptions (cf Voydeville's Thesis, Nancy 1951), nasal airflow resistance has so far been estimated irrespective of variations in air intake needs. The object of the test presented here is to offer a quick, simple and objective method for determining the level of muscular effort at which a given subject spontaneously switches from nasal to buccal respiration. A thin flexible tube (1,5 mm across) is stuck at one end on to the subject's lower lip and the other into a carbon dioxyde analyser. The subject is then made to pedal at a speed at least 30 rev./min. on an ergometric bicycle, while a braking force increasing by 20 W ever two minutes is applied. The emission of carbon dioxyde starts being detected, and graphically recorded, only when the subject starts breathing through his mouth. Results obtained so far show that this threshold can vary as widely as from 80 to 180 W among healthy individuals. Further aplications of this test to both healthy subjects and patients with impaired nasal function would contribute towards throwing light on the still obsure notion of "nasal comfort".
