A comparison of thiosulphate-citrate-bile salts-sucrose (TCBS) agar and thiosulphate-chloride-iodide (TCI) agar for the isolation of Vibrio species from estuarine environments.

AIMS: The purpose of this study was to compare a recently described medium, thiosulphate-chloride-iodide (TCI), for the isolation of estuarine vibrios with thiosulphate-citrate-bile salts-sucrose (TCBS). METHODS: A total of 492 colonies which developed on these media from estuarine water samples taken monthly over a 10-month period were examined. RESULTS: A much larger number of colonies developed on TCBS than TCI, and minimal taxonomic criteria indicated that a higher percentage (61%) of TCBS colonies could be identified as Vibrio spp. when compared with TCI (46%). SIGNIFICANCE: This study suggests that TCBS is a superior medium when compared with TCI for the isolation of Vibrio spp. from estuarine waters. Because of the public health risk presented by V. vulnificus, V. parahaemolyticus, V. cholerae and other vibrios, the selection of the most appropriate medium for their isolation is extremely important.

Evolution and revolution in child psychiatry: ADHD as a disorder of adaptation.

Current knowledge about early plasticity and children's responsiveness to environmental modifications as well as the atheoretical nature of current nosological systems necessitate alternative models to explain the phenomena of childhood behavioral and emotional disturbances. Evolutionary biology provides one such framework. It organizes data from the behavioral and cognitive sciences and parallels similar efforts in other areas of medicine and biology. Through an evolutionary biological lens, some mental disorders are better viewed as an adaptive response to early pathogenic environments and/or reflect the optimization of brain function to some environments at the cost of poorer response to the demands of other environments. As an example, the authors examine attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in relation to evolutionary theories of psychology and biology and clarify the potentially adaptive nature of characteristics of inattention, impulsivity, and motoric hyperactivity, depending on the nature of child's environments. Reframing ADHD characteristics according to evolutionary theory has important treatment implications for clinicians and offers researchers opportunities for novel scientific discoveries.

Defense mechanisms in severe adolescent anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: To compare ego defense mechanisms in adolescents with anorexia nervosa and other major psychiatric disorders, to defenses in healthy adolescents. METHOD: Thirty-seven patients with anorexia nervosa, 30 with major depressive disorder, 20 with obsessive-compulsive disorder, 53 with borderline personality disorder, 60 with schizophrenia, and 81 healthy controls were assessed with Pfeffer's Ego Defense Scale. RESULTS: Regression, denial, projection, repression, introjection, and total defenses were common to all psychiatric patients and distinguished them from normal adolescents. In addition to these defenses, anorectic patients also used intellectualization more frequently than normal adolescents and psychiatric patients. They used sublimation more than other psychiatric patients. Patients with disorders, apart from obsessive-compulsive disorder, that are considered to be often comorbid with anorexia did not have different defense than schizophrenic patients. CONCLUSIONS: Anorectic adolescents overutilize relatively more mature defenses than do psychiatrically ill adolescents, and they overutilize immature defenses compared with normal adolescents. This combination of mature and immature defenses may be related to the uniquely heterogeneous ego functioning seen in anorectic patients, and it may provide insight into the nature of the psychopathology of anorexia nervosa. It also could have important psychotherapeutic and prognostic value.

[Young girls and contraception. A survey conducted in the MFPF family planning center, Strasbourg, in 1985].

The results of a survey on contraception among 513 adolescent women attending a family planning clinic in Strasbourg, France, in 1985 are presented. "Eighty percent of them were attending school. In over half the cases, this was their first consultation for contraceptive advice. 33% of the subjects did not return after this initial consultation. The age at which sexual intercourse first occurred was between 14 and 17, with a peak at 15-16 years of age. Most of the girls attending this Family Planning Center were told about it by friends or a sister (78%) and they rarely told their parents what they were doing (76%). Most of them (63%) preferred a woman doctor for a contraceptive consultation." (SUMMARY IN ENG)
