Neurodevelopmental screen in the school entrant medical examination as a predictor of coordination and communication difficulties.

A neurodevelopmental screen in the medical examination of 3750 school entrants with a mean age of 5 years 4 months was validated as a predictor of coordination and communication difficulties. Class teachers of 6, 7, and 8 year olds completed a questionnaire about motor and communication success and difficulty in school activities. Below average ratings on the neurodevelopmental screen were associated with later problems in school activities. The findings, reported to all head teachers, suggest some approaches to intervention in school. The neurodevelopmental screen contributes to early assessment of special education needs of clumsy children.

Age Factors

Breast self-examination practices and breast-cancer stage.

To determine the relation between breast self-examination performance and the clinical and pathological stage of breast cancer at first diagnosis, we studied 335 patients with breast cancer. Approximately one fourth of the patients reported that they had been practicing monthly breast self-examination, and half that they had never practiced breast self-examination. More frequent performance of breast self-examination was associated with more favorable clinical stage and fewer axillary-lymph-node metastases on histologic examination. On pathological examination, the age-adjusted maximum tumor diameter of patients practicing monthly breast self-examination was 1.97 +/- 0.22 cm (mean +/- S.E.M.) as compared to 2.47 +/- 0.20 for those performing self-examination less often than monthly and 3.59 +/- 0.15 for patients never performing breast self-examination. These data associating more favorable clinical and pathological stages of breast cancer with more frequent breast self-examination need to be extended by determination of the survival rates of the various self-examination groups.

Adult

Combined androgen and antimetabolite therapy of advanced female breast cancer. A report of the cooperative breast cancer group.

A clinical trial of androgen and antimetabolite therapy of advanced female breast cancer was conducted in 110 patients by the Cooperative Breast Cancer Group. An objective regression rate of 20% was achieved in women receiving oral testolactone, 6% in patients given intravenous fluorouracil alone, and 14% when the androgen and antimetabolite were administered together. This randomized trial according to the CBCG protocol did not produce the high regression rate noted previously in a nonrandomized, nonprotocol evaluation of these drugs.
