Clinical, serologic and immunogenetic studies in patients with chronic cutaneous (discoid) lupus erythematosus who have verrucous and/or hypertrophic skin lesions.

Verrucous and/or hypertrophic lesions occasionally occur in patients with lupus erythematosus. It has been suggested that these patients have skin disease which is characterized by chronicity and resistance to therapy other than intralesional corticosteroids. We studied 8 patients with chronic cutaneous (discoid) lupus erythematosus and 1 patient with papulosquamous subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus with verrucous and/or hypertrophic lesions. Serologic, immunogenetic, and clinical data were gathered to confirm the distinctiveness of this subset and to seek specific laboratory correlates.

The labial melanotic macule.

A series of 41 cases of melanotic lesions of the lip from 1980 to 1984 are reported. These lesions occur preponderantly in young white women on the lower lip. The term labial melanotic macule is suggested for these lesions.

Cutaneous leukocytoclastic vasculitis complicating hairy cell leukemia (leukemic reticuloendotheliosis).

A patient with hairy cell leukemia (HCL) receiving fluoxymesterone developed cutaneous leukocytoclastic vasculitis. His clinical picture was of purpuric papules and pustules on his chest and limbs. Oral corticosteroid therapy and colchicine therapy were tried, with only minimal improvement. Chemotherapy with pentostatin (2'-deoxycoformycin) resolved the vasculitis and placed the HCL in remission. Fifteen cases of HCL associated with vasculitis have been reported previously. Hairy cell leukemia and vasculitis appear to have more than a coincidental relationship.
