Cervical or urethral scrapings were collected from 245 guinea pigs that had clinical signs of guinea pig inclusion conjunctivitis (GPIC) or were parents of newborn young having clinical signs of GPIC. Giemsa-stained smears were examined for cytoplasmic inclusion bodies, and samples were passaged in 6-day-old embryonating eggs. Complement-fixation tests were performed on 44 samples passaged through eggs in an effort to detect the presence of GPIC antigen. Unequivocal evidence of chlamydial infection of the genital tract was not found.

Experimental evidence for the oncogenic potential of herpes simplex virus.

The data presented in this review reveal the transforming potential and oncogenic capability of herpes simplex viruses in cultured cells and in experimental animals, respectively. Unfortunately, the role of these agents in human cancer, especially cervical, cannot be unequivocally established through the indirect approaches used, but circumstantial evidence that these viruses represent potential oncogens in the human population is mounting.

Identification and discrimination of vowel-consonant syllables in listeners with sensorineural hearing loss.

The speech encoding ability of eight persons with sensorineural hearing loss and three persons with normal hearing was studied in identification and discrimination paradigms. In the identification task a feature analysis of transmitted information for VC syllables was used to study encoding ability. Transmitted information was reduced from normal for persons with hearing loss, indicating a loss of ability to encode consonants. In the discrimination task coding ability was studied by measuring reaction times (RTs) for "same" and "different" decisions. The RSs for individuals with impaired hearing were found to be significantly different from those subjects with normal hearing. The trend was for faster "same" than "different" RTs among the normal subjects and faster "different" than "same" RTs among the hearing-impaired persons. The results are interpreted as indicating that the two groups of subjects used different processing modes in discriminating between pairs of phonemes.

Chronic superficial keratitis in dogs: detection of cellular hypersensitivity.

Dogs affected with chronic superficial keratitis (CSK) and clinically normal dogs were tested for cellular hypersensitivity, using the leukocyte migration-inhibition (LMI) technique to 3 ocular antigens (Staphylococcus aureus and corneal and iridal proteins). Affected dogs had statistically significant increases in hypersensitivity cellular responses against corneal and iridal antigens. Affected dogs did not differ from clinically normal dogs in their cell response to S aureus.
