The aim of the present study was to analyse the results of various reconstruction techniques of the facial skin with regard to general parameters such as the patients' age and health condition and to surgical parameters such as defect size, contamination of surgical fields and the type of reconstruction. 273 cases were evaluated, comprising local flaps (217), island flaps (21), free skin grafts (22) and cutaneous or myocutaneous distant flaps (13). The overall rate of major complications was 13.5%. No correlation was found with the age or impaired health of the patients nor did contamination by oral/nasal bacterial flora or the type of restoration show any significant correlation. The size of the defect turned out to be the only variable significantly related to the occurrence of complications (p = 0.0108). The complication rate observed following the repair of defects smaller than 30 mm in diameter was 7.5% while it rated 19.1% following the repair of defects larger than 30 mm. The overall rate of partial or total flap necrosis was low (2.9%). Secondary corrections and further surgical re-entry were required in 4.7% of all patients.
On the prognostic value of c-erbB2-encoded protein p185 in breast cancer there are controversal opinions. With the outlook of an evaluation of the prognostic value of p185 expression in breast cancer the relationships between p185 expression and known prognosis factors were investigated. Using polyclonal antibody against p185 33% out of 163 primary breast carcinomas are p185-positive. Within the various histological types of tumors the percentage of p185 expression differs. It is suggested that p185 indicates a certain type of biological behavior and plays a role in the pathogenesis of breast cancer. Thus the determination of p185 could allow definition of biological subclasses. A statistically significant correlation between expression of p185 and the presence of lymph node metastases or tumor size can not be proved. Nevertheless p185 expression is increased in cases with more than three positive lymph nodes. Expression of p185 correlates statistically significantly positively with histological grade and epidermal growth factor receptor, and negatively with steroid receptor status. Furthermore, high-proliferating tumors are more common in p185-positive cases than in p185-negative cases. It is concluded that p185 may be associated with an increased malignancy and proliferation activity of tumors.
1. The central nervous system of neonatal albino rats showed age specific functional parameters, some of them are comparable with those of human prematures. 2. The reflex times (RT) of the lid closure reflex and of the withdrawal reflex of the foreleg, hindleg and tail were measured during the behavioral states quite sleep, active sleep, and wakefulness of rats between 1st and 20th postnatal day. 3. The RT of the investigated reflexes decreased with age in different degrees. 4. The RT was found to be different in the behavioral states; with increasing age the RT becomes longer in active sleep than in the other states. 5. The reflex time measurement of withdrawal reflexes during different behavioral states should be proved for its applicability as a test for normal brain development in humans newborns.
27 albino-rats were used to measure the growth of skull, spinal column, spinal cord, roots of the spinal nerves, and length of tail and extremities at their 1st to the 5th, the 8th, 11th, 15th, and 20th postnatal day. The growth rate of the distal and caudal parts of the distal body was higher than of the cranial and proximal ones.
