Ratchet cellular automata.

In this work we propose a ratchet effect which provides a general means of performing clocked logic operations on discrete particles, such as single electrons or vortices. The states are propagated through the device by the use of an applied ac drive. We numerically demonstrate that a complete logic architecture is realizable using this ratchet. We consider specific nanostructured superconducting geometries using superconducting materials under an applied magnetic field, with the positions of the individual vortices in samples acting as the logic states. These devices can be used as the building blocks for an alternative microelectronic architecture.

Fluctuating topological defects in 2D liquids: heterogeneous motion and noise.

We measure the defect density as a function of time at different temperatures in simulations of a two-dimensional system of interacting particles. Just above the solid to liquid transition temperature, the power spectrum of the defect fluctuations shows a 1/f signature, which crosses over to a white noise signature at higher temperatures. When 1/f noise is present, the 5-7 defects predominantly form stringlike structures, and the particle trajectories show a 1D correlated motion that follows the defect strings. At higher temperatures this heterogeneous motion is lost.

Depinning by fracture in a glassy background.

We force a single particle through a two-dimensional simulated glass of smaller particles. We find that the particle velocity obeys a robust power law that persists to drive wells above threshold. As the single driven particle moves, it induces cooperative distortions in the surrounding medium. We show theoretically that a fracture model for these distortions produces power-law behavior and discuss implications for experimental probes of soft matter systems.

Charge transport transitions and scaling in disordered arrays of metallic dots.

We examine the charge transport through disordered arrays of metallic dots using numerical simulations. We find power law scaling in the current-voltage curves for arrays containing no voids, while for void-filled arrays charge bottlenecks form and a single scaling is absent, in agreement with recent experiments. In the void-free case we also show that the scaling exponent depends on the effective dimensionality of the system. For increasing applied drives we find a transition from 2D disordered filamentary flow near threshold to a 1D smectic flow which can be identified experimentally using characteristics in the transport curves and conduction noise.

Dynamical ordering of driven stripe phases in quenched disorder.

We examine the dynamics and stripe formation in a system with competing short and long-range interactions in the presence of both an applied dc drive and quenched disorder. Without disorder, the system forms stripes organized in a labyrinth state. We find that, when the disorder strength exceeds a critical value, an applied dc drive can induce a dynamical stripe ordering transition to a state that is more ordered than the originating undriven, unpinned pattern. We show that signatures in the structure factor and transport properties correspond to this dynamical reordering transition, and we present the dynamic phase diagram as a function of strengths of disorder and dc drive.

Colloidal dynamics on disordered substrates.

Using Langevin simulations, we examine driven colloids interacting with quenched disorder. For weak substrates the colloids form an ordered state and depin elastically. For increasing substrate strength, we find a sharp crossover to inhomogeneous depinning and a substantial increase in the depinning force, analogous to the peak effect in superconductors. The velocity versus driving force curve shows criticality at depinning, with a change in scaling exponent occurring at the order to disorder crossover. Upon application of a sudden pulse of driving force, pronounced transients appear in the disordered regime which are due to the formation of long-lived colloidal flow channels.

Rectification and phase locking for particles on symmetric two-dimensional periodic substrates.

We demonstrate a rectification phenomenon for overdamped particles interacting with a 2D symmetric periodic substrate when driven with a dc and a circular ac drive. As a function of longitudinal dc amplitude, the longitudinal velocity increases in a series of quantized steps distinct from Shapiro steps with transverse rectification occurring near these transitions. The rectification phenomenon is explained using symmetry arguments and a simple model.

Novel colloidal crystalline states on two-dimensional periodic substrates.

We show, using numerical simulations, that a rich variety of novel colloidal crystalline states are realized on square and triangular two-dimensional periodic substrates which can be experimentally created using crossed-laser arrays. When there are more colloids than potential substrate minima, multiple colloids are trapped at each substrate minima and act as a single particle with a rotational degree of freedom, giving rise to a new type of orientational order. We call these states colloidal molecular crystals. A two-step melting can also occur in which individual colloidal molecules initially rotate, destroying the overall orientational order, followed by the onset of interwell colloidal hopping.

Ratchet-induced segregation and transport of nonspherical grains.

We consider through simulations the behavior of elongated grains on a vibrating ratchet-shaped base. We observe differences in layer velocity profile and in net grain velocity for grains that are composed of one, two, or three collinear spheres. In the case of mixtures of different species of grains, we demonstrate layer-by-layer variation in the average velocity as well as layer segregation of species, and show that horizontal separation of the species can be achieved using this geometry. We also find that the addition of a small number of shorter grains to a sample of long grains provides a lubrication effect that increases the velocity of the long grains.

Collective interaction-driven ratchet for transporting flux quanta.

We propose and study a novel way to produce a dc transport of vortices when applying an ac electrical current to a sample. Specifically, we study superconductors with a graduated random pinning density, which transports interacting vortices as a ratchet system. We show that a ratchet effect appears as a consequence of the long range interactions between the vortices. The pinned vortices create an asymmetric periodic flux density profile, which results in an asymmetric effective potential for the unpinned interstitial vortices. The latter exhibit a net longitudinal rectification under an applied transverse ac electric current.

Moving Wigner glasses and smectics: dynamics of disordered Wigner crystals.

We examine the dynamics of driven classical Wigner solids interacting with quenched disorder from charged impurities. For strong disorder, the initial motion is plastic, in the form of crossing winding channels. For increasing drive, there is a reordering into a moving Wigner smectic with the electrons moving in separate 1D channels. These different dynamic phases can be related to the conduction noise and I(V) curves. For strong disorder, we show criticality in the voltage onset just above depinning. We obtain the dynamic phase diagram for driven Wigner solids and demonstrate a finite threshold of force for transverse sliding, recently observed experimentally.

Collective multivortex states in periodic arrays of traps

We examine the vortex states in a 2D superconductor interacting with a square array of pinning sites. As a function of increasing pinning size or strength we find a series of novel phases including multivortex and composite superlattice states such as aligned dimer and trimer configurations at individual pinning sites. Interactions of the vortices give rise to an orientational ordering of the internal vortex structures in each pinning site. We also show that these vortex states can give rise to a multistage melting behavior.
