Dynamics of frontal EEG activity, sleepiness and body temperature under high and low sleep pressure.

The impact of sleep deprivation (high sleep pressure) vs sleep satiation (low sleep pressure) on waking EEG dynamics, subjective sleepiness and core body temperature (CBT) was investigated in 10 young volunteers in a 40 h controlled constant posture protocol. The differential sleep pressure induced frequency-specific changes in the waking EEG from 1-7 Hz and 21-25 Hz. Frontal low EEG activity (FLA, 1-7 Hz) during sleep deprivation exhibited a prominent increase as time awake progressed, which could be significantly attenuated by sleep satiation attained with intermittent naps. Subjective sleepiness exhibited a prominent circadian regulation during sleep satiation, with virtually no homeostatic modulation. These extremely different sleep pressure conditions were not reflected in significant changes of the CBT rhythm. The data demonstrate that changes in FLA during wakefulness are to a large extent determined by the sleep-wake dependent process with little circadian modulation, and reflect differential levels of sleep pressure in the awake subject.

Testis-specific RT7 protein localizes to the sperm tail and associates with itself.

The RT7 gene recently cloned by us is expressed as an abundant RNA in round spermatids. In vitro transcription-translation showed that the RT7 gene encodes a protein of 26-27 kDa on SDS-polyacrylamide gels. Here we report the development of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) raised against a peptide from the predicted N-terminal amphipathic alpha-helix of the rat RT7 protein. All mAbs recognize RT7 protein or N-terminal parts of it. To investigate RT7 in vivo, mAbs were used in immunofluorescence microscopy and confocal laser immunofluorescence microscopy. Several mAbs recognize RT7 protein in elongating spermatids: the observed staining pattern suggests a nonrandom localization in these cells. Two mAbs recognize the protein only in sperm tails. Using co-immunoprecipitation assays, we found that RT7 can form stable complexes with itself that are associated through a region located in the N-terminal half of RT7. Our results identify the RT7 protein as a major sperm tail component and suggest that it may be a structural component of sperm tail outer dense fibers (ODF).

Inhibition of the Na+/H(+)-antiporter by theophylline in growth-arrested monkey kidney cells.

Treatment of monkey kidney CV-1 cells with theophylline leads to growth arrest, with sensitivity to theophylline being greatly increased in the absence of bicarbonate. Theophylline, like amiloride, increases the sensitivity of cells to intracellular acidification and protects cells from acid shock. These observations and direct measurements of 22Na uptake suggest that growth-arresting effects of theophylline are mediated by the Na+/H(+)-antiporter.

Reversal of simian virus 40 small-t-antigen-induced theophylline resistance.

Simian virus 40 small-t antigen allows the growth of CV-1 cells in concentrations of theophylline that normally prevent cell cycling. This effect is completely overcome by two ionophores that uncouple mitochondria and by the anti-mitochondrial drug methylglyoxal bis-(guanylhydrazone).

[Statistical study of dental caries in children aged 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 years of geneva in 1973. Study of 614 children following administration of fluoride tablets, in collaboration with the Geneva Youth Dental Clinic].

By this study it was possible to evaluate dental health in children of Geneva aged 5 1/2 and 6 1/2 years old. Of 614 children, 28.1% of the 5 1/2 year old and 18.2% of the 6 1/2 year old are without caries or fillings. The DMF factor is of 3.34 (t), 4.40 (s) and 5.57 (t), 8.02 (s) respectively. About one fifth of the children shows an irreproachable mouth hygiene. These children with mediocre or bad hygiene. 7.0% and 5.4% respectively show green or black stain. Children receiving fluorine tablets have more resistant deciduoud teeth than others of the same age from unfluoridated regions.
