[Presence of measles virus antibodies in a group of patients with malignant hemopathy].

225 monosera from patients (121 adults and 104 children) with different malignant haemopathies from the Institute of Hematology were studied. The hemagglutination inhibition (HI) technique and the neutralization technique were used to know the presence of antimeasles antibodies. All these patients were under immunosuppression treatment at the time of taking the specimen and children had received the triple viral vaccine (measles, rubella, parotiditis) before the disease was diagnosed. It was found that 51 (42.14%) of the adults' specimens were positive by HI and of the 25 negative specimens that underwent the neutralization technique, 18 (72%) proved to be positive. Of the 104 sera corresponding to children, 31 (29.8%) specimens were positive by HI, whereas 29 of the negative were studied by neutralization. 18.34% of all the specimens continued to be negative by both methods. According with the 2 techniques used, the presence of measles virus antibodies was of 81.66% in children and of 90.78% in adults.

[Gastric pneumatosis].

Gastric pneumatosis is an infrequent entity. The clinical course may oscillate from an asymptomatic or mild condition (gastric emphysema) to a severe disorder with high mortality (emphysematous gastritis). Diagnosis with imaging techniques is based on radiological evidence of air in the gastric wall.

[Migraine and MIDAS (MIDASELA) in Colombian hospital workers].

AIMS: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of migraine and its implications in the occupational and outside employment/daily activities of the workers at a regional hospital in the Cundiboyacense Plateau in Colombia. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The available members of the house staff at this institution were interviewed by applying the neuroepidemiological protocol drawn up by the World Health Organization (WHO); general doctors performed the initial screening and the determination of neurological disease was carried out by a clinical neurologist, both in patients who were positive and negative for neurological disease. Quality of life was evaluated by means of the MIDAS (Migraine Disability Assessment) survey, MIDASELA (in Spanish for Latin America); the analysis was performed using the EPI 6.04 software application. RESULTS: A total of 238 people were studied: 188 females and 50 males; the prevalence of migraine was 22.5% (15.5% by the WHO protocol and 7% false negatives), with predominance in females (OR: 5.49; p< 0.005). In the MIDASELA questionnaire, 47.2% of the patients had a 50% alteration in their productivity, with regard to their occupational and outside employment/daily activities. A minimum number of patients (3.8%) were unable to work because of migraine, as compared to the figures for outside employment/daily activities (29.7%) or those involving leisure/family (66.4%). The average work, outside employment/daily and family time lost per patient because of migraine was 0.3, 2 and 5.2 days, respectively. CONCLUSION: A sub register in the prevalence of migraine could be reported in places where the WHO protocol is used. This pathology will have to be taken well into account in Colombian hospital workers due to its individual, occupational, family, social and economic impact. It is necessary to introduce health policies and programmes aimed at evaluating, controlling and treating this type of pathology in an appropriate manner, in order to improve the quality of life of those whose job it is to look after and improve that of the other Colombians.

[Streptococcal antibodies in a general population. Comparative study in 2 periods at a health service].

Antibodies to streptococcal Estreptolysin O and DNAse B were sampled from 1986 through 1989 in 135 healthy individuals of both sexes, grouped by age, at a metropolitan area of Santiago, Chile, and their geometric mean titers (GMT) were calculated. GMT of 110 U (Todd) for Antiestreptolysin and 194 U for Anti-DNAse B were recorded in the whole sample. Antiestreptolysin O titers were 62 UT for age group 5 to 9 years, 127 UT for 10 to 14 year olds and 114 UT for ages 15 or older. Anti-DNAse B titers for the same age groups were 158 U, 240 U and 198 U respectively. No significant differences were detected between these results and those from an earlier (1978 to 1981) study, except for Anti-DNase B titers in 5 to 9 years olds, which were significantly lower (GMT 158 U vs. 270 U) in the most recent screening.

Covalent-binding native blot in the determination of specific IgE to latex gloves allergens. Comparison with other methods.

Six sera from patients with clinical symptoms of latex hypersensitivity and latex-RAST values ranging from class 1 to 4 were used to characterize latex-glove allergens by immunoblotting. Twelve % acrylamide-SDS-PAGE of the latex glove crude extract revealed a single band with an estimated mol wt lower than 14,000 D. The proteins bound to nitrocellulose after electrical transfer as shown by Ponceau red staining of the membrane. However, standard immunoblotting methods using alkaline-phosphatase anti-IgE did not detect the presence of specific IgE. Different variants of SDS-PAGE immunoblotting were also unsuccessful. On the other hand, the use of IEF and capillary transfer (native blot) to a covalent-binding hydrophilic membrane was found to be the method of choice for the study of this allergen. The authors believe that this procedure can be helpful in the study of other antigen-antibody systems, particularly when standard immunoblotting assays fail.
