A rat model of distractibility: effects of drugs modifying dopaminergic, noradrenergic and GABAergic neurotransmission.

A procedure for analyzing effects of drugs on distractibility is proposed. Rats are trained to traverse a straight runway with a sucrose solution as reinforcement. Once the response has been acquired, an additional runway ending in an empty box is connected. The time spent investigating this additional runway is the measure of distractibility. Amphetamine, 1 mg/kg i.p., increased distractibility. In rats that were never reinforced, amphetamine at a dose of 1 mg/kg reduced the time spent in the additional runway. This shows that the effects of amphetamine in the reinforced animals cannot be interpreted as enhanced exploration. Furthermore, the benzodiazepines diazepam (2 and 4 mg/kg, i.p.) and chlordiazepoxide (2.5, 5 and 10 mg/kg, i.p.), known to enhance exploration of novel environments, did not affect the time spent in the additional runway in sucrose-reinforced animals. It was concluded that the procedure indeed is a model of distractibility. The dopamine antagonist cis(Z)-flupenthixol, at a dose of 0.25 mg/kg, i.p., blocked the effects of amphetamine, 1 mg/kg. Flupenthixol itself, in doses of 0.25 and 0.5 mg/kg, did not affect the time spent in the additional runway. This suggests that enhanced dopaminergic activity indeed is responsible for the effects. This proposal is further supported by experiments showing that the noradrenaline precursor dihydroxyphenylserine (10 mg/kg + carbidopa, 50 mg/kg, both i.p.) and the noradrenergic neurotoxin DSP4 (50 mg/kg, i.p.) had no effect on distractibility. Moreover, amfonelic acid, a dopamine releaser with slight or no effect on noradrenergic neurotransmission, had effects very similar to those of amphetamine when given in doses of 0.25 and 0.5 mg/kg, i.p. A lower dose, 0.125 mg/ kg, was ineffective. Taken together, these data suggest that enhanced dopaminergic neurotransmission increases distractibility in the rat. However, both amphetamine and amfonelic acid may stimulate serotonin release. Until serotonergic drugs have been tested, a contribution of this transmitter cannot be ruled out. The distraction procedure may constitute an animal model of some kinds of disordered information processing.

Androgen-dependent mast cell degranulation in the Harderian gland of female Syrian hamsters: in vivo and organ culture evidence.

In previous articles we have reported the "disappearance" of Harderian gland mast cells (HGMC) after treatment with testosterone. In the present work we study: (a) if the apparent decrease in the number of mast cells caused by this androgen is real or is due to the fact that testosterone induces mast cell degranulation that avoids its recognition by toluidine blue staining; (b) if testosterone acts through its receptor directly on the Harderian gland (HG). In order to give an answer to the first question, we observed HG of female Syrian hamsters treated with testosterone under the electron microscope to find the possible degranulated mast cells not recognizable with the aid of the toluidine blue staining. We also studied in vivo and in vitro the effects of the beta-agonists isoproterenol and salbutamol, given that they increase cAMP and can therefore prevent degranulation of mast cells. Finally we have used cytocalasin B, which inhibits degranulation by blocking actin depolimerization. Both the beta-agonists and cytochalasin B were able to prevent the decrease of mast cells, as recognized by staining with toluidine blue after treatment with testosterone. Indeed, when observed under the electron microscope, abundant degranulated mast cells were found after treatment with testosterone. For solving the second issue we analyzed the effect of the antiandrogen cyproterone acetate in vivo and in vitro. Our results demonstrate that testosterone is able to induce degranulation of HGMC in the Syrian hamster Mesocricetus auratus and that this effect is achieved directly through its receptor on the Harderian gland.

Modification of odd-chain length unsaturated fatty acids by hepatocytes of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fed diets containing fish oil or olive oil.

Hepatocytes isolated from rainbow trout fed on diets containing either fish oil or olive oil were incubated with individual odd-chain length unsaturated fatty acids (19:1n-9, 19:2n-6, 19:3n-3, 21:2n-6, 21:3n-6, 21:4n-6, 21:3n-3, and 21:5n-3) to examine whether these fatty acids were substrates for modification by desaturation and elongation. All odd-chain length fatty acids were readily assimilated into the lipids of hepatocytes from both dietary groups of fish, but their conversion to longer-chain, more unsaturated derivatives was more pronounced with cells from trout fed olive oil. Thus, the conversion of 19:2n-6 and 21:2n-6 to 21:3n-6 and 21:4n-6, and of 19:3n-3 to 21:4n-3 and 21:5n-3, was most obvious in cells from the olive oil group, as was the conversion of 21:3n-6 and 21:3n-3 to 21:4n-6 and 21:4n-3, respectively. Elongation of 19:1n-9 to 21:1n-9 and 23:1n-9 occurred in cells from both groups. No 23:6n-3 was detectable as a product of 19:3n-3 or 21:3n-3. However, this fatty acid was a major product formed by cells from fish fed olive oil presented with 21:5n-3. Cells from both groups of fish incorporated 21:4n-6 and 21:5n-3 into their lipids largely without modification but chain-shortened around 40, 23, and 19% of the incorporated 21:2n-6, 21:3n-3, and 19:1n-9, respectively. The results demonstrate that odd-chain length unsaturated fatty acids can act as substrates for the desaturation, elongation, and chain-shortening systems of trout hepatocytes.

Age-related differences in norfloxacin pharmacokinetic behaviour following intravenous and oral administration in sheep.

The pharmacokinetics of norfloxacin after intravenous (i.v.) and oral (PO) administration in lambs (n = 5) and adult sheep (n = 5) were studied. After i.v. administration (10 mg.kg-1) plasma concentrations were best fitted by a three-compartment open model in both age groups. Distribution volumes were significantly larger in lambs (approximate 4.0 fold difference between 4 week old and adult sheep). There was no significant difference (p < 0.05) between the groups in terms of elimination halflife but plasma clearance was significantly higher in lambs. Norfloxacin was poorly absorbed after oral administration (60 mg.kg-1) in sheep (F = 4.04%). Mean oral bioavailability was 73.51% in lambs (30 mg.kg-1). Norfloxacin elimination was faster in lambs after oral administration. MRTt was significantly prolonged in both age groups when compared with the respective data for i.v. administration.

Family history and risk of fatal prostate cancer.

To examine the relation between fatal prostate cancer and family history of prostate cancer in a first-degree relative, we analyzed data from a prospective mortality study of 481,011 men with no history of cancer at enrollment in 1982. During 9 years of follow-up, 1,922 deaths from prostate cancer occurred. Results from Cox proportional hazard models showed that family history of prostate cancer was related to fatal prostate cancer [rate ratio (RR) = 1.60; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.31-1.97]; men with two or more affected relatives had a greater than threefold increase in risk (RR = 3.19; 95% CI = 1.51-6.71). Men whose relatives were diagnosed with prostate cancer before age 65 years (RR = 2.03; 95% CI = 1.33-3.09) had a greater effect of family history than men whose relatives were diagnosed at older ages (RR = 1.50; 95% CI = 1.17-1.91). Rate ratios did not increase with decreasing age of the study participants. The 60% increase in risk for men with at least one affected relative is lower than that reported in previous studies.

The effect of polymorphic inversions on body size in two natural populations of Drosophila buzzatii from Argentina.

Previous works in a colonized and an original population of Drosophila buzzatii have shown a consistent relationship between the inversion polymorphism and thorax length, a measure of body size. However, the populations studied in those reports share a close genealogical relationship as suggested by several lines of evidence. In the present paper, we revisit this issue by analysing the correlation between second chromosome arrangements and thorax length in two Argentinian natural populations (Termas de Río Hondo and Arroyo Escobar) from different biogeographic areas with different host plants. Our findings are: (1) inversion frequencies were significantly different between populations; (2) the mean thorax length of flies collected in both populations was not significantly different; and (3) we obtain confirming evidence that flies carrying 2st, the ancestral gene order, have on average a smaller body size than those carrying the derived arrangements (2j and 2jz3). These results suggest that the biometrical effect of inversions on body size previously described are due to genetic differences between arrangements and not to the close historical relationship between the populations studied in previous reports.

Urbanization elicits a more atherogenic lipoprotein profile in carriers of the apolipoprotein A-IV-2 allele than in A-IV-1 homozygotes.

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is increasing in developing countries, particularly in urban areas. The impact of urbanization and apolipoprotein (apo) A-IV genetic polymorphism on plasma lipoproteins was studied in 222 men and 236 women from rural and urban Costa Rica. The apoA-IV allele frequencies were 0.937 for apoA-IV-1 and 0.062 for apoA-IV-2, Significant interactions between the apoA-IV polymorphism and area of residence (rural versus urban) were detected for HDL cholesterol (P = .003), apoA-I (P = .05), LDL particle size (P = .01), and LDL/HDL cholesterol ratio (P = .005). Urban compared with rural carriers of the apoA-IV-2 allele had significantly lower plasma HDL cholesterol (0.95 versus 1.17 mmol/L) and apoA-I (980 versus 1140 mg/L), a significantly higher LDL/HDL cholesterol ratio (3.35 versus 2.39), and significantly smaller LDL particles (258 versus 263 A). In contrast, no significant rural-urban differences for these parameters were found in apoA-IV-1 homozygotes. Regardless of their apoA-IV phenotype, urban residents consumed more saturated fat (P = .02) and smoked more cigarettes per day (P = .03) than rural residents. A significant interaction between saturated fat intake and apoA-IV phenotype was found for HDL cholesterol (P < .0003) and LDL/HDL cholesterol ratio (P < .003). Increased saturated fat intake (13.6% versus 8.6% of calories) was significantly associated with 6% higher HDL cholesterol and no change (0.7%) in LDL/HDL cholesterol ratio in apoA-IV-1 homozygotes and with 19% lower HDL cholesterol and 37% higher LDL/HDL cholesterol ratio among carriers of the apoA-IV-2 allele. Smokers (> or = 1 cigarette per day) had significantly lower HDL cholesterol (P < .005) and apoA-I (P < .01) concentrations than nonsmokers (< 1 cigarette per day), particularly among carriers of the apoA-IV-2 allele (-19% and -13%) compared with apoA-IV-1 (-4% for both). After taking these lifestyle characteristics into account, the areas of residence by phenotype interactions for plasma lipoprotein concentrations were no longer statistically significant. Lifestyles associated with an urban environment, such as increased smoking and saturated fat intake, elicit a more adverse plasma lipoprotein profile among Costa Rican carriers of the apoA-IV-2 allele than in apoA-IV-1 homozygotes. Therefore, under the conditions studied, persons with the apoA-IV-2 allele may be more susceptible to CHD.

In vitro cytotoxicity of guanylhydrazones (MGBG and PGBG) on cultured Chinese hamster ovary cells.

Guanylhydrazones, methylglyoxal bis(guanylhydrazone) (MGBG) and a new compound, phenylglyoxal bis(guanylhydrazone) (PGBG), interfering with polyamine biosynthesis have considerable potential for the use as antiparasitic and antitumor agents. The effect of these drugs on the cellular viability of Chinese hamster ovary cells was examined by in vitro neutral red assay. The time exposure and metabolic influence was studied. These compounds have a dose- and time-dependent cytotoxicity. The IC50 values were of 597.22 micrograms/ml and 1.77 micrograms/ml for MGBG after 3 and 24 h of incubation, respectively, and 380.50 micrograms/ml for PGBG after 24 h of incubation. The PGBG treatment during 3 h had no cytotoxic effect when the concentrations were lower than 3000 micrograms/ml. With the cytotoxicity assay used, we observed that the presence of S9 in cultured medium did not influence the cytotoxicity of these compounds.

Dietary analysis of meals served in the breakfast and lunch programs of Puerto Rican schools.

BACKGROUND: Nutritional analysis of meals in the Federally-sponsored Breakfast and Lunch Programs in Stateside Schools has recently been completed. However due to ethnic and cultural differences, the findings may not be directly applicable to similar nutrition programs in Puerto Rico. It is our aim to carry out an analysis of meals served in Federal programs in Puerto Rico and to compare results to the stateside study. METHODS: Twenty eight different breakfast meals and 96 different lunch meals being cycled in elementary, middle and secondary schools throughout the entire island of Puerto Rico were analyzed for content using the Minnesota Nutrition Data System 32 and compared with: 1) compliance to meal pattern requirements of federal programs, 2) dietary guidelines for Americans (DG) and 3) recommended dietary allowances (RDA's). RESULTS: Breakfasts and lunches served in Puerto Rican Schools satisfy federal meal pattern requirements however most frequently offered foods different from programs in the mainland, reflecting ethnic and cultural food preferences. In terms of DG's adequate protein was present, cholesterol content was satisfactory but meals had excess percent energy from fat as well as excess energy from saturated fat, high sodium and a lower than recommended level of energy from carbohydrate. In terms of RDA's meals had prescribed levels of vitamin A, vitamin B12, vitamin C, calcium, folacin, magnesium, phosphorus and potassium. Below prescribed levels included vitamin B6, copper, vitamin E, energy, fiber, iron, niacin and zinc. CONCLUSIONS: While differences in food preferences exist between foods available in the Breakfast and Lunch Programs in Puerto Rican and U.S., schools, they have similar strengths and weaknesses when compared to compliance with U.S. Dietary Guidelines and with recommended dietary allowances.

[Rapid and slow progression of the infection by the type 1 human immunodeficiency virus in a population of seropositive subjects in Madrid].

BACKGROUND: The rate of progression to AIDS in HIV-1 infected subjects is variable, and circumstances associated with more rapid or slow development of severe immunodeficiency might be grouped in three categories; environmental cofactors, host features, and particular virulence of the virus itself. Currently, it is not yet clear the the relative impact of each one. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was done in a cohort of 1,783 IV-1 infected persons from three centers located in Madrid, mainly devoted to attend persons at risks for HIV infection. Long-term nonprogressors (LTNP) were defined as those with more than 8 years of confirmed HIV seropositivity, and CD4+ T-cell count above 500 x 10(6)/I in the absence of antiretroviral therapy or symptoms suggesting immunodeficiency. Rapid progressors (RP) were those with less than 5 years from seroconversion and repeatedly current CD4+ T-cell count below 200 x 10(6)/I. An analysis of different epidemiological, immunological and virological features was performed comparing LTNP and RP. RESULTS: Among 1,783 HIV (+) subjects studied, 100 (5.6%) fulfilled criteria for LTNP and 12 (0.7%) for RP. Among LTNP, stabilized CD4 slope was seen in 16 (33%) out of 48 after more than 8 years of infection. Variables statistically associated with LTNP were: past history of intravenous drug addiction (80% of them), male gender (79% of them), high alcohol intake (48% of them), HIV-1 non-syncitium inducing viral phenotype, and very low or undetectable HIV-1 plasma viremia. In contrast, variables associated with RP were: infection by sexual contact (75% of cases), female gender (50% of them), syncitium-inducing viral plenotype, and high titers of plasma viremia. The CD4/CD8 ratio below 1 was seen in all RP and in 88% of LTNP. However, a preferent depletion of CD4+ cell occurred in the first group, instead of an enhancement of the CD8 T-cell count in LTNP. The prevalence of serological markers for hepatotropic viruses and other potential infectious cofactors was not higher in RP. CONCLUSIONS: Multiple factors seems to account for the different rate of disease progression observed in HIV-1 infected persons. The dynamic equilibrium between the immune system and the virulence of the virus seem to be influenced--but not determined--by environmental infectious or non infectious cofactors.

Automated analysis of drugs in urine.

A totally automated procedure has been developed for the preparation and analysis of 34 basic and neutral drugs in urine samples using an integrated HP 7686 PrepStation-HP 6890 gas chromatographic system. The automated preparation of the sample consisted of a liquid-liquid extraction of 250 microliters urine at alkaline pH with 100 microliters of methyl tert.-butyl ether. After phase separation the organic solvent was automatically placed in the injector of the gas chromatograph and analysed. High recoveries of extraction were obtained. The limits of detection of most of the drugs were less than 0.5 microgram/ml. The method, which allows the preparation and analysis of the samples to be completely synchronised, showed good accuracy and precision.

[The main causes of death in Spain, 1992; comment].

BACKGROUND: To study the mortality from the leading causes of death in Spain in 1992 and trends since 1980. POPULATION AND METHOD: The number of deaths was obtained from mortality statistics. We included the 12 causes with the highest mortality rates in 1992 and calculated for each cause of death the age adjusted mortality rates for each year in the study period, the percent change from 1990 to 1992 and from 1980 to 1992, and the adjusted ratio of rates between men and women in 1992. RESULTS: The leading causes of death in 1992 were malignant neoplasms, with 24.3% of deaths and a mortality rate of 205.6 per 100,000 population; diseases of the heart, with 22.6% and a rate of 191.8 per 100,000; and cerebrovascular disease, with 12.7% and a rate of 107.6 per 100,000 population. Between 1980 and 1992 the adjusted mortality rate increased for four causes of death: malignant neoplasms; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and similar diseases; nephritis, nephrotic syndrome and nephrosis; and suicide. From 1990 to 1992, the adjusted mortality rate declined for all other causes of death. From 1990 to 1992, the adjusted mortality rate declined for all causes of death except for malignant neoplasms and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, which rose 0.4% and 69%, respectively. The adjusted mortality rate was higher in men than in women for all causes of death except for diabetes mellitus and atherosclerosis. CONCLUSIONS: Except for malignant neoplasms and HIV infection, mortality from all other leading causes of death declined in 1992 with respect to 1990, independently of the trend experienced by each cause of death in the eighties.

[Socioeconomic differences in the use and accessibility of health care services in Spain].

BACKGROUND: One of the main goals of the public health care systems is to assure an equitable accessibility and utilization of health care services according to the need for care. The present study evaluates the extent to which this objective has been reached in the Spanish National Health System from the socioeconomic perspective. POBLATION AND METHOD: The 1993 National Health Survey was used. Doctor consultation, use of inpatient hospital services, dentist consultation and gynaecologist consultation were the indicators of utilization analysed. Accessibility was measured by time spent travelling to the health centre, time spent waiting at health centre and time spent waiting for an ordinary admission to hospital. Educational level was the socioeconomic variable used. RESULTS: Doctor consultation and use of inpatient hospital services were more frequent in individuals with the lowest level of education, while dentist and gynaecologist consultation were in those with the highest level. No statistically significant differences were observed in doctor consultation and use of inpatient hospital services after adjusting for age, sex, health care coverage and several need indicators by using a multiple logistic regression model. On the contrary, the odds ratios for individuals with first, second and third educational level were 1.31 (CI 95% = 1.14-1.51), 1.74 (1.49-2.03) and 2.06 (1.71-2.47) in dentist consultation and 2.01 (1.71-2.35), 2.40 (2.01-2.87) and 2.54 (2.02-3.21) in gynaecologist consultation. On the other hand, individuals with no education showed the longest average waiting times, especially for an ordinary admission to hospital, which was 83.5 days for subjects with no education and 18.8 for those with third educational level. However, the multiple linear regression analysis only found statistically significant results in time spent travelling to the health center and time spent waiting at the health center. CONCLUSIONS: Although no differences in doctor consultation and use of inpatient hospital services by socioeconomic status were found, the results obtained regarding the use of other health care services and waiting times indicate the persistence of barriers limiting the equitable access and utilization of health care services in Spain.

[Socioeconomic differences in mortality in 8 Spanish provinces].

BACKGROUND: The scarce fulfillment of the job in the Bulletin on Death (BD) has limited the study of the socioeconomic differences in mortality in Spain. Nonetheless, the authors have studied the socioeconomic differences in mortality by different causes of death, using the Spanish geographical areas in which the information regarding the occupation of the deceased persons in the BD is of good quality. METHODS: Males between 30-64 years of age who died in eight Spanish provinces from 1988-1990 were included in the study. Overall mortality was compared by the relative risk of mortality adjusted for age and by the main causes of death among the professionals and managers, manual workers and farmers. The relative risk was calculated with the use of log-lineal models (Poisson regression) taking the group of professionals and managers as the reference group. RESULTS: The global relative risk of mortality in the group of manual workers was 1.72 and was 1.56 in the farmers. The highest mortality by different causes of death was observed in the manual workers while intermediate mortality was found in the farmers. The exceptions to this general pattern were colon and rectum cancer and leukemias with a higher mortality being found in the group of professionals and managers, although the differences were not statistically significant. Cerebrovascular diseases, suicide and cancer of the nervous system showed the highest relative risk of mortality in the farmers. Both the manual workers and the farmers demonstrated the highest relative risks of mortality in the youngest age groups although this difference attenuated with age. CONCLUSIONS: Except for colon and rectal cancer and leukemias, manual workers and farmers present higher mortality than professionals and managers. Furthermore, these differences may be underestimated since only the active economic population was studied, thereby excluding the individuals pertaining to the population groups with higher mortality rates.

[Immunologic reconstitution of peripheral blood lymphocytes in patients treated by bone marrow transplantation].

BACKGROUND: Lymphocyte subset reconstitution was studied in 65 patients undergoing allogeneic and autologus bone marrow transplantation (BMT). PATIENTS AND METHODS: The expression of molecules on the membrane of lymphocyte subsets was assessed by two-colour flow cytometry and a direct immunofluorescence assay. The functional capacity of the patient's T lymphocytes following transplantation was identified by stimulation whit peripheral blood lymphocytes; B cells from BMT recipients were tested for their ability to respond, in vitro, to pokeweed (PWD) mitogen. RESULTS: 1) The proportion of CD8+ T lymphocytes was higher than the CD4+ T lymphocytes until 1 1/2 year after-BMT, with high percentage of immature T cells (CD3+, CD8+, HLA-DR+, CD25-) in the first nine months post-transplant. Moreover, a large proportion of T lymphocytes lacked CD5 expression in the first year following BMT. 2) T-cell proliferative response to PHA was low with subsequent recovery until normality. 3) Low numbers of B cells in the first two months with a significant increase since then until 1 1/2 year after-BMT; the phenotype of these B cells was mainly CD19+, CD5+. 4) High in vitro spontaneous immunoglobulin production by peripheral blood B lymphocytes and an impaired response to PWM was observed. 5) Increased percentage of cells with natural killer (CD56) cell phenotype was seen during the 2nd and 3rd months after the graft infusion. After 1 1/2 year postgrafting, this percentage returned to normal level. CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, these data indicate the existence of numerous abnormalities in several subsets of peripheral blood lymphocytes after BMT and suggest a slow kinetics of immune recovery after human marrow transplantation being complete between 18 and 24 months following BMT.

Dihydroxyprogesterone acetophenide 150 mg + estradiol enantate 10 mg as monthly injectable contraceptives.

A survey among users and health personnel participating in the Salvadorian Social Security Institute (ISSS) Family Planning Program revealed interest in including a monthly preparation for injection as a contraceptive method offered by this Institution. The formulation containing dihydroxyprogesterone acetophenide (DHPA) 150 mg + estradiol enantate (E2EN) 10 mg was chosen for conducting an open and prospective study of efficacy and tolerability. Between January 1992 and March 1994, 7054 women were treated with this product for a total of 60010 months. A sample composed of 4505 women treated at this Institution confirmed that average users are young, have one or two children, do not show a particular geographical distribution and choose the monthly injection instead of oral contraceptives as the first contraceptive method or for the puerperium. The study formulation showed a high efficacy (Pearl Index: 0.018) and tolerability (general withdrawal rate throughout the study: 27.09%). The most frequent adverse events included bleeding disorders, headache and mastalgia; their incidence decreased spontaneously from the sixth month (3.9%), reaching 0% after two years. Treatment was discontinued due to adverse events in 3.47% of women. No significant bodyweight or systolic and diastolic blood pressure alterations were observed. Based on these results, the monthly injectable contraceptive was included in the basic product list at ISSS.

Non-fatal injuries and the use of psychoactive drugs among young adults in Spain.

We compared the prevalence of injuries requiring medical treatment in the general population, in cocaine users and in heroin users, and we studied the factors associated with the occurrence of injuries in these groups, using data from two interview surveys carried out in 1993 in Spain: the National Health Interview Survey, a national representative sample of the non-institutionalized general population, and a survey of a non-probability sample of heroin or cocaine users selected from the community. The subjects included in the study were persons 16-40 years of age in urban areas: 4261 persons from the general population, 369 cocaine users and 215 heroin users. The annual prevalence of injuries requiring medical treatment was 7.9 percent in the general population, 10.8 percent in cocaine users and 35.2 percent in heroin users. There was a statistically significant positive association of injury occurrence (1) among the general population: with male sex, alcohol use, use of tranquillizers/sleeping pills, and the use of antidepressants or stimulants; (2) in cocaine users: with the use of opiates other than heroin; and (3) in heroin users: with alcohol use, the use of tranquillizers/sleeping pills, and the injected route. The only statistically significant negative association was with the amount of cocaine consumed among heroin users. The results suggest that other psychoactive substances besides alcohol are positively associated with injury occurrence, and that cocaine use may contribute to a reduced risk of injuries associated with the use of depressants (alcohol, tranquillizers, heroin).
