Spontaneous mammary carcinoma in C57BL and C3H mice: a histochemical study.

The mucosubstances in a series of 12 mammary carcinomas arising in C57BL mice were compared with those in tumours in nine C3H mice and with normal "resting" and lactating glands. A strain difference rather than a difference according to tumour type was found. The epithelial elements in the C57BL tumours contained mainly sialomucin with a little neutral mucosubstance and sulphomucin was present in some. Sulphated mucopolysaccharide was prominent in the stroma of these tumours. The C3H mice tumours contained no sulphomucin, less sialomucin but more neutral mucosubstance. The mucosubstances were studied in serial transplants of four tumours. An acid to neutral mucosubstance change with dedifferentiation of the tumour has been observed and found to be similar to a series of changes previously observed in a group of human gastrointestinal tumours.

Adenocarcinoma↗

Lifespan, age changes and tumour incidence in an ageing C57BL mouse colony.

Detailed data from a colony of C57BL mice kept for research into ageing processes are given on weights of 13 organs between the ages of 6 and 30 months; pathological findings and x-ray results from animals aged 6, 24 and 30 months; age-specific tumour incidences in 24 organs in 3-month period up to 36 months of age. Results of previously published age-related studies of reproductive capacity, dental abnormalities and brain changes are summarised.

The 'through focus plate' : a simple method for obtaining images through focus on a single photographic plate in the electron microscope using a tilting stage.

Tilting the specimen in an electron -icroscope by a relatively small angle can provide a continuous through focal series on a single plate, as the displacement of the object at the edge of the field can be adjusted to be of the same order of magnitude as the alteration of focal point by the fine lens controls. This simple rapid manoeuvre could have applicaitons in the microscopy of uniform preparations, particularly if the specimen is subject to beam damage, and in assessing microscope performance rapidly.

The structure of tumours derived from mouse cells after "spontaneous" transformation in vitro.

The histological structure of 58 primary tumours derived from spontaneously transformed tissue culture cell lines from embryonic (14-16 days), young (3-20 days) and old (28-34 months) C3H and C57 mice is described. Although the cell lines were derived from a number of different organs the tumours were similar in morphology. The pattern was mixed, with "fibrosarcomatous", "myxoid", "epithelioid" and giant cell areas. The tumours resemble some types of haemangiopericytoma.
