Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) for spatially resolved trace analysis of early-medieval archaeological iron finds.

The suitability of laser ablation ICP-MS for minor and trace analysis of archaeological iron finds, produced by a direct reduction process in a 'bloomery' furnace, is reported. The analysis of elemental impurities in the iron can provide useful archaeometallurgical information on the production process and the provenance of the iron. Since, even after refinement, the iron resulting from this process may contain many inclusions (slag, charcoal, holes, etc.), a method should be used with sufficient spatial resolution to preclude the inclusions from the analysis. The ablation parameters are selected such that ablation craters of approx. 100 microm in diameter are obtained. The method is validated with low alloy steel and cast iron standard reference materials and by a comparative analysis with electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). The precision is limited mainly by the homogeneity of the iron, rather than by instrumental reproducibility. The advantages and drawbacks of the method are briefly compared with EPMA. Preliminary results from the analysis of archaeological iron samples from excavations at Develier-Courtetelle (Canton Jura, CH), Neftenbach (Canton Zurich, CH), Wartau (Canton St Gallen, CH) and Mont Chemin (Canton Valais, CH) are given.

Estimation of the partitioning characteristics of drugs: a comparison of a large and diverse drug series utilizing chromatographic and electrophoretic methodology.

1-Octanol-water log P values for a large number of standards and bioactive molecules have been correlated to the logarithm of the corresponding capacity factors determined by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, using a novel dynamically coated phase, containing phosphatidylcholine. Similarly a correlation was also obtained for log P and capacity factors determined by micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography (MECC), involving the use of phosphatidylcholine--bile acid mixed micelles in the separation buffer. Statistical analysis of data obtained via both methods has shown that either method will give reliable log P predictions, although MECC is generally more useful for neutral and basic compounds. It is recommended that, as both methods can easily be set up in an analytical laboratory, their combined use provides rapid methodology for the confident estimation of hydrophobicity, as measured by log P for the widest diversity of chemical structures.

Synthesis, chromatographic resolution and chiroptical properties of carboxyibuprofen stereoisomers: major metabolites of ibuprofen in man.

The chromatographic resolution of the four stereoisomers of carboxy-ibuprofen, a major metabolite of ibuprofen in man, was achieved using a Chiralpak AD chiral stationary phase (CSP) (J.T. Baker, Milton, Keynes, UK). The elution order of the stereoisomers was determined to be 2'S,2R;2'R,2R;2'R,2S;2'S,2S by a combination of stereoselective synthesis of diastereoisomeric mixtures and analysis of the two diastereoisomers isolated from human urine following the administration of (S)-ibuprofen. The individual stereoisomers were isolated by semipreparative chiral phase chromatography and characterized by circular dichroism spectroscopy.

Meeting the needs of young adults.

As they mature and become sexually active, more young people face serious health risks. Most face these risks with too little factual information, too little guidance about sexual responsibility, and too little access to health care. Meeting young adults' diverse needs challenges parents, communities, health care providers, and educators. Despite urgent needs, program efforts have been slight and slowed by controversy.
