[Umbilical blood flow indices in smoking women].

A collective of 154 pregnant women, who smoked at least 5 cigarettes a day was examined by doppler ultrasound. Measurements were taken at the two ends of the umbilical cord. The results had been compared to the physiological constellation of the resistance indices. Elevation of the PI was mainly to be registrated at the fetal abdominal insertion of the umbilical vessels. It seems to be dependent on the duration and amount of smoking. There was no correlation to be found to the fetal outcome.

[Psychosomatic aspects of females with placental insufficiency].

Significant differences occurred on various scales by comparing 30 pregnant women who suffered from dysfunction of placenta chosen at random. Comparison was made by means t-tests and cross tables in GT, FPI, SSG sociological and medical data. Additionally a controlled experiment was performed. Dominating parts on a body level are the masochistic and the rigid one, both high charged structures. They seem to be more frequent than schizoid, oral and psychopathic parts. Looking to psychosomatics of dysfunction of placenta aggressive wishes against the child could be found.

[Hepatitis B screening in pregnancy].

At the I. Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Vienna, between April 1, 1985 and September 30, maternity patients between 24 and 28 weeks of gestation had their blood tested for hepatitis B. Out of 167 patients screened for hepatitis B, three had a positive hepatitis B surface antigen test (1.8%), nineteen a positive anti-hepatitis BsAg test. Two patients were positive for anti-hepatitis BeAg (1.2%), one was positive for hepatitis-BeAg (0.6%). The presence of hepatitis BeAg conveys a higher infant attack rate. Yet even in the absence of the antigen and/or the presence of anti-hepatitis BeAg, infection may lead to a fatal outcome. Also, if the mother is a carrier, risk of acquiring the infection because of chronic exposure is present. Therefore the question and possible need for routine Hepatitis B-screening during pregnancy arises, not only in maternity patients at high risk for hepatitis B.

Clinical value of immunolymphscintigraphy in patients with breast cancer.

Thirty four patients suspected of suffering from breast cancer were investigated by immunolymphscintigraphy (ILS) a few days before a planned operation. Patients received 500 micrograms of the BCD-F9 monoclonal antibody or its F(ab')2 fragments containing 1 mCi of Iodin-123. Each preparation was given by a subcutaneous injection into the fingerwebs between the 2nd and 3rd fingers of both hands. Three static scintigrams were taken 4, 8 and 24 hours following injection of the radiolabelled antibodies. ILS results were always compared to histopathological findings and gave for the intact antibody a sensitivity of 83%, a specificity of 93% and an accuracy of 89%, the positive predictive value was 91% and the negative predictive value was 80%. On the other hand, when the F(ab')2 fragments were used the sensitivity of the ILS technique was 75%, the specificity was 100% while the accuracy was 86%, the positive predictive value was 100% and the negative predictive value was 75%.

[Fetal megacystis--prenatal diagnosis and attempt at therapy].

Dilatations of the fetal urinary tract are suspect for obstructions. An extremely dilated bladder may also point to an innervation disorder. In the here presented case a very rare disease is the cause for the dilatation of the fetal bladder, the Megacystis-Microcolon-Hypoperistalsis-Syndrome. No mature ganglionic cells are detectable in the bladder wall histologically. Up to now eight cases have been reported, all female neonates died within the first days after birth. Our presented child - also a female - is now more than one year old, but artificial feeding is still necessary.
