[Characteristics of the use and abuse of psychoactive substances].

The aim of the paper was to review the basic characteristics of drug abuse. Our questionnaire research included eighth-grade students of seven primary schools and first/second grade students of nine secondary schools in Kragujevac. In average, every fifth student took part in the investigation. Unfortunately, the research HAVE SHAWN that this phenomenon was wide-spread among adolescents; also, that their environment was well-aware of this but sadly, little was done to prevent the occurrence and spreading of drug abuse. Male adolescents, who usually show greater incidence of alcohol and cigarette consumption, also take some sort of drugs (52.9%) more frequently. Every thirtieth subject (or one student in each class, in average) used a psychoactive substance. The fact that every third participant knew somebody who took drugs implied that the phenomenon was spread among students. Commonly, they started taking drugs at the age of fourteen or fifteen, but every seventh or eighth of them did that so when he/she was about ten years old. It may be concluded, from the presented results, that the phenomenon is widespread, i.e. most frequently polytoxicomania. Also, the parents of the drug abusing students were frequently aware of the fact, but they responded in different ways. Regrettably, every fifth parent was not interested in the situation. Influence of all social subjects is crucial in prevention of this extremely important socio-medical problem, but the role of the family is essential and the hardest. The school and other subjects must also be included.

[Age as a suicide risk factor].

The aim of the paper was to determine the influence of age in suicidal occurrence and behavior. The subjects were the individuals who attempted or committed suicide in the city of Kragujevac during the observed period. We used the data from the Police of Serbia (Kragujevac) obtained at the scene of suicide, medical records, and data from the Psychiatry Center of the Clinical Center "Kragujevac". The data were collected and statistically evaluated by SPSS for Windows, and the significance was determined by chi 2 and t-test, and expressed as a rate per 100,000 inhabitants. The greatest suicide rates were recorded in the groups of > or = 65 years old (27.3 per 100,000 inhabitants) and 45-54 years old (27.2 per 100,000 inhabitants). The group of individuals > or = 45 years old was almost twice as inclined to suicide compared to the other except, while the youngest age group that showed almost equal numbers. There were more attempts (65.6%) within the group of 25-34 years old individuals (the same was true for the group of 35-44 years old individuals). No differences were observed between the indigenes and the migrants among older suicides (> or = 55 years old). The most affected were the migrant 25-34 and 45-54 years old, and the indigenes 25-34 and 35-44 years old. Number of suicides decreased, showsed stagnation, or reached the plateau in all age groups (mostly), except for those 15-24 years old, during the period of observation the (1991-1995). The lowest figure (9.1%) was found in 1992, and than it increased and reached 39.4% in 1995. Furthermore, unemployed individuals 55-64 and 15-24 years old and the employed 25-34 years old were considerably affected. In younger individuals, the motive--cause was unrequited love, family conflicts, abstinencial crisis, etc. In those a little older (24-34 years old) it was represented by family problems and illness (27.3%); this was also true for the others.

[General characteristics of suicide in the region of Kragujevac].

A complete record of all suicides (regardless the outcomes) was done for the five-year period (1991-1995). The research reviewed the factors influencing suicidal behavior, with special reference to socio-medical and meteorological ones. The data were obtained from the Ministry of internal affairs of Serbia, medical records from the Psychiatry Center (Clinical center Kragujevac), and SINOP reports from the meteorological station in Kragujevac. Structure of the suicides with lethal outcome showed extremely great percentage (60.2%) of the unemployed. Significant difference, at the level of 0.01, was found between age structure and suicide. There was somewhat younger age among tentamen suicide (41.23 years) in comparison to suicides with lethal outcome (59.50 years). Likewise, a significant difference between autochthons and newcomers, in favor of the latter was found. Stable, warm and sunny weather was the greater suicidal risk than the other biotrophic weather conditions. Based on these results, there is a possibility of tracking down the individuals at risk and timely prediction of suicide. In order to prevent this significant socio-medical problem.
