Lesional alopecia areata T lymphocytes downregulate epithelial cell proliferation.

Alopecia areata is characterized by peribulbar infiltration by activated T cells. The function of these T cells in the pathogenesis is unknown. To elucidate the potential role of lesional T cells in the regulation of hair growth, T-cell clones from the margin of involved alopecia areata lesions from three patients were obtained by cloning, using the limiting dilution method. Of these T-cell clones, 31 were CD4+CD8-, 15 were CD8+CD4- and 2 were CD4-CD8-. The T-cell clones were activated and the supernatant harvested 24 h later and tested for its capacity to regulate proliferation of neonatal keratinocytes. The majority of the T-cell clone supernatants inhibited epithelial cell proliferation in a dose-dependent fashion. When the cytokine profiles of conditioned T-cell medium were compared with the growth-regulatory capacity, it was found that T-cell clones that released high amounts of interferon gamma and/or tumour necrosis factor alpha inhibited keratinocyte growth. In conclusion, T cells derived from the margin of active alopecia areata lesions are able to downregulate epithelial cell proliferation. This points to an important role of the immune system, especially the T cells, in this disease.

Estimated cost of person-Sv exposure.

The present paper summarizes work performed under contract to the Department of Energy and reported separately. This paper covers efforts to define a cost per person-Sv by determining a value for a societal life and coupling the result with the probability of death due to radiation exposure. The value of a societal life was estimated by examining wrongful death awards and settlements, amounts taken out in life insurance, amounts spent in the last year of life for the critically ill, lifetime earnings and investments, and other approaches and values found in related literature. The values of a societal life ranged from $600,000 to $7,000,000, with a value of $4,000,000 considered by the authors as a conservative average in terms of 1990 U.S. dollars. The associated costs per person-Sv thus determined were found to range from $18,000 per person-Sv to $630,000 per person-Sv ($180 per person-rem to $6,300 per person-rem), with a value of $200,000 per person-Sv ($2,000 per person-rem) taken as a conservative average.

[Vaginal sonography: pilot study for using in ovarian screening procedures].

From May to September 1987, 221 women of over 45 years of age were examined by transvaginal ultrasound at the Department of Gynaecology (Gynaecological Hospital) of the University of Marburg. Transvaginal ultrasound proved to be significantly superior to clinical examination, since palpation had resulted in "NAD" findings in all cases. The average diameter and the volume of postmenopausal ovaries, determined by transabdominal sonographic studies, were easily confirmed by the new method. In 6% of the 221 patients, pathological findings of the ovaries were clinically "NAD". Since the usefulness of transabdominal ultrasound in screening for ovarian cancer has already been confirmed by other authors, this pilot study aims at providing an opportunity to test transvaginal ultrasound also in a large ovarian cancer screening programme by furnishing the essential basic research data. Age-adapted average ovarian sizes and significant differences in size between the right and the left ovary were used to differentiate between normal and pathological findings as well as changes in the ovarian parenchymal patterns.
