AIDS knowledge and homophobia among French and American university students.

22 male American and 24 male French college students' knowledge of AIDS scores were equivalent on a currently constructed 18-item questionnaire. Both groups answered more than 75% of the questions correctly. The American students' homophobic bias and reaction scores were higher than those of the French students on a 43-item homophobic questionnaire. The latter findings were interpreted as consistent with reduced effects of conservative, orthodox religion in France and the stability of traditional religious influence in America over the past three decades. No relation was found between knowledge of AIDS and homophobia in these small conveniently available samples.

Sensory evidence for olfactory receptors with opposite chiral selectivity.

Human odor responses to alpha-ionone enantiomers were measured by psycho-physical methods. Surprisingly, subjects' relative sensitivities for these enantiomers were found to diverge widely, some subjects being much more sensitive to (+) than to (-) and vice versa. In 63 subjects the (+)/(-) threshold concentration ratio varied over 4 orders of magnitude. Nine subjects with extreme (+)/(-) ratios were further tested several times over a 7-month period and retained stable ratios. These same nine subjects, when tested for threshold sensitivity to carvone enantiomers, showed (+)/(-) ratios that varied only in a narrow range and did not correlate with their ionone ratios. It is suggested that odor discrimination of alpha-ionone enantiomers involves at least two receptor types of opposite chiral selectivity and that their distribution varies independently in the human population.

[Regulation pathways of expectancy behavior in the cat: histologic study].

In the behaving cat, motion expectancy of an event to occur (for a prey to appear) is accompanied by the development of 14 Hz electrocortical mu rhythms in the hand subarea of cortical somatic area SI. Our first aim here was to identify subcortical sites projecting to this cortical mu focus, using localised retrograde HRP marking. The only site thus labelled was the thalamic zone well known to project to the cortical mu area, and to act as a generator for the mu rhythms (ventral posterior nucleus, VP); no other deep structure could be identified, that could have been considered as a putative zone for control of cortical mu. We then injected minute amounts of HRP into the thalamic mu zone; labelled neurones were located (apart from those expected in the relays of the somatic pathway) in locus coeruleus (bilaterally) and ipsilaterally in the thalamic nuclei anteroventralis and laterodorsalis. In brief then, it seems that the regulation of the VP-SI mu channel (that we could previously demonstrate), by other deep structures is exerted upon the thalamic side.

Modeling health services systems.

A conceptual model for the analysis of personal and collective health services systems is proposed. By placing existing formal models in the framework of this conceptual model, we emphasized their qualities and shortcomings. We discussed the normative and descriptive approach of formal modeling. Finally we emphasized the close conceptual parallel that exists between personal and collective health services systems.

[Strategies in measuring nursing care].

When resources are limited, the balance between the supply and the demand of nursing care is becoming more and more necessary. This situation justifies the use of tools to measure work charges in nursing. This article analyses the relationship between work charges and time estimation in nursing care. From a bibliographical review on this topic it discusses possibilities and techniques of time estimation for the nursing care given to a patient, as well as the caring time he or she requires. Two different approaches and some conclusions from the analysis of both of them are showed: first; the direct method, i.e. that of measuring caring levels; and secondly, the indirect method, that is a system for classifying patients. The interest of the direct method is advocated because of its clarity, external validation possible integration in nursing care plans.

Humans

A patient classification system by level of nursing care requirements.

A classification scheme and an instrument to determine work load, in use since June 1975 in the daily adjustment of supply and demand in the 24 pediatric units of the Sainte-Justine Hospital, Montreal, Quebec, is described. Construction and implementation of the instrument are delineated. The instrument was successful in determing the number of nurses necessary to meet the work load on various units. On the basis of these data, the short- and long-term management of supply and demand of nursing care was examined and the classification system was generalized to all types of patients except psychiatric.
