Challenges of traction in critical care: a case study.

Traction can sometimes seem like an overwhelming challenge in the critical care setting not only to the patient and family, but also to the nurse. Critical care nurses must know the principles, purposes, methods, and patient care considerations necessary to be able to provide appropriate care and teaching for the patient in traction. This article describes these principles and then illustrates them through a case study. The case describes a patient who experiences multiple trauma and focuses on the nurse's role in the care of this patient in traction.

Interdisciplinary patient teaching plans: design and implementation.

Interdisciplinary teaching plans are standardized teaching plans that provide guidance for preparation and actual delivery of patient education. The development of interdisciplinary teaching plans serves to better actualize the ANA and NAON standards of practice, to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to patient teaching as recommended by JCAHO, and to create an efficient patient teaching documentation system. Teaching plans create a mechanism that allows individual disciplines to document patient responses to teaching, and the plans provide written information for the patient that promotes self-care management. This article discusses problem identification, the development process, the content model, teaching plan development, and the implementation process of interdisciplinary teaching plans in one large university medical center.

Clinical exemplars to recognize excellence in nursing practice.

Nursing is a dynamic, challenging, rewarding profession. It is important that we take opportunities to tell the world and each other about the richness of caring, which is the essence of our practice. Clinical exemplars are a way to capture this true nature of nursing. It is through sharing of clinical exemplars that we celebrate our own practice and share our uniqueness with others. This article defines clinical exemplars, describes their importance to nursing practice, and discusses their benefit to identify skill acquisition and recognition in nursing.

Collaborative development of a standardized order form for orthopaedics.

Standardization of treatment parameters is key to facilitating accurate initiation of orthopaedic patient care. A standard "Postop Orthopaedic Orders" form was developed via a collaborative effort among orthopaedic nurses, physicians, and unit secretaries. Its purpose was to improve the completeness of physicians' orders, efficiency of order transcription, and speed initiation of the therapeutic regime.
