Sample application by in-gel rehydration improves the resolution of two-dimensional electrophoresis with immobilized pH gradients in the first dimension.

We describe a modification in the sample application mode for isoelectric focusing with immobilized pH gradients. Instead of being applied at the surface of the gel in a sample cup, the sample is introduced into the gel during the immobilized pH gradient strip rehydration step. This modification implies the use of low percentage gels (below 3.5% T) and specially designed, but simple, rehydration chambers. The main advantages are a uniform resolution without side effects and the possibility of handling large sample volumes (500 microL for a standard 3 x 160 x 0.5 mm strip), allowing micropreparative work (milligram samples) with a simple experimental design.

Animals

[Treatment of upper genital infections in women. Multicenter study of the comparative efficacy and tolerance of an amoxicillin-clavulanic acid combination and of a triple antibiotic combination].

Eighty-two patients with laparoscopically confirmed salpingitis were randomly divided into two groups in a multicentre and prospective trial. Single drug therapy with the amoxicillin-clavulanic acid combination was used in 42 patients (group A). The other 40 patients were given a combination of penicillin, aminoside and metronidazole (group B). For each case a secondary prescription for a tetracycline was discussed. Clinical results were comparable in both groups: sooner (at the end of the hospitalization period) in group A: 10 cured, 30 improved and 2 failures against 9 cured, 30 improved in group B. Later (evaluation after 5 to 8 weeks) a relapse was noted in five patients in group A and included one case of angioedema in group B. It is concluded that amoxicillin-clavulanic acid combination is a satisfactory alternative to the penicillin-aminoside-metronidazole combination, especially as it is simpler to use.

Adolescent

[Determination of the vertical dimension of occlusion].

It is generally accepted that some anatomical sites, facial as well as oral, remain stable throughout the life of a human being. In this study, a population of 191 dentulous subjects without clinical symptoms and a mean of 21 years and 4 months, was selected. The first part attempts, from facial landmarks, stable with time, to establish statistics that could provide norms for subjects without teeth and aid clinicians in evaluating the Vertical Dimension, in the treatment of edentalous patients. Mac GEE conducted a similar study without, however, any detail concerning the number and the age group of the sample population. Our conclusions do not contradict the study of this author and give additional details, namely: -14% of the population studied presents the following identical distances: . interpupillary distance, . distance: nasal spine/submental region (in maximum intercuspation), . distance: glabella/nasal spine, . distance: bipupillary line/stomion. -69% of the population studied presents three measurements out of four, which are identical.

Adult

[Osteoid osteoma of the femur neck in children and adolescents. Apropos of 12 cases].

Specific characters of the osteoma osteoid as a beniGN tumor are well known. We report twelve cases of femoral neck localisation. Delays in diagnosis of six months to one year after the onset of symptoms are quite common. Chronic or recurrent pain is localised in the inguinal area with a projection to the leg and to the knee. The pain was relieved by Aspirin in six cases only. X ray of the pelvis antero-posterior showed the tumor, but did not always show the lucent image with the surrounding sclerotic area that is well observed with tomography. The scintigraphy with technetium 99 is perhaps more sensitive as a way of diagnosis. The lesion is the place of intensive uptake. Although the surgical excision "in block" and the replacing of bone graft and material of osteosynthesis gave positive results, many technical problems are present during the intervention because of the important cortical reaction and bone densification. In six cases, peroperative X Ray and histology did not give diagnosis.

Adolescent

[Prognosis of infantile scoliosis (author's transl)].

35 cases of infantile scoliosis were studied most of whom were followed for more than 10 years. In 11 instances, the scoliosis was present in the new born. The results are compared with those obtained by other authors. The authors consider that the signs found at the first examination as described by Mehta are not reliable enough and that the subsequent evolution of the curve is important. They have observed totally regressive and partially regressive cases. They are also found that right thoraco-lumbar curves in girls were common. Criteria for a more reliable prognosis are put forward.
