Histogenetic differences between parent and daughter vessels of human coronary arteries.

The age-dependent changes of the parent vessels of human coronary arteries are characterized by a very early appearance and very intense development, as well as by a rapid association of degenerative processes. In contrast, the age-dependent changes of the daughter vessels of human coronary arteries are characterized by a very late occurrence and very slow development, as well as by the lack of associated degenerative processes. This histogenetic difference between parent and daughter vessels was not observed in other organ arteries. The two different histogenetic areas of the coronary tree appeared separated by a boundary constantly found at the level of the branching area, in a point where longitudinal muscle columns of the parent vessel criss-cross proximate to the branch orifice and describe half a spiral round it. No particular wall changes were observed when an epicardial branch became an intramyocardial one.

Histochemical study on the glycosaminoglycans (acid mucopolysaccharides) of the human coronary arteries.

Investigations carried out on fetuses, children, adolescents and young adults showed that a particular histochemical pattern of the coronary intima glycosaminoglycans existed in each group of age. Beginning with childhood, a subendothelial "ground substance-rich layer" could be more clearly and constantly delineated in the thickened coronary intima. It exhibited a different chemical composition and macromolecular structural stability of its glycosaminoglycans as compared to those of the elastic hyperplastic and musculo-elastic layers. The presence of a "ground substance-rich layer" including dermatan sulfate and glycosaminoglycans resistant to hyaluronidases and chondroitinases appeared in our material as a prerequisite for the development of fatty dots and streaks. During the onset of fibrous plaques, the progressive blockade of the glycosaminoglycan acidic groups by basic proteins and the occurrence of numerous saline linkages between intimal macromolecular aggregates were the prevalent histochemical changes.

Studies on human coronary arteries. I. Branch pads or cushions.

The chronology of branch pad development in fetal coronary arteries, their topographic and structural particularities as well as some observations on their evolution in succeeding age-groups are presented. A peculiar emphasis is given to the microarchitecture and functional significance of longitudinal muscle columns as a prevalent structural component of branch pads.

Coronary arteries in infants up to the age of ten years. I. Chronology of adaptive intimal changes.

In the coronary arteries of old fetuses the presence of musculo-elastic and elastic hyperplastic layers was firstly detected in the branching pads of aortic ostia and the emergence of the left anterior descending branch. These layers appeared constantly more developed in the left than in the right coronary bed. During the first six months of the extrauterine life the coalescence of pads revealed a passage from localized to diffuse adaptive changes in the main branching sites and in their immediate vicinity. Then, in the first decade of life, a progressive extension of the musculo-elastic and elastic hyperplastic layers was observed, leading to the well known aspect of diffuse intimal thickening.
