The tilted family.

This paper is a report on clinical observations of a particular family constellation which has seldom been discussed in terms of its theoretical and therapeutic importance. We outline the possible effects on families of having same-gender children. Four case examples are given to highlight how this issue can be of value in assessment and treatment.

Listening in family psychotherapy.

The author describes with clinical examples why the neglected tool of listening is of vital importance in supervising and practising family psychotherapy. This neglect is highlighted as a possible side effect of focussing exclusively on the use of one way mirrors and video equipment in teaching family psychotherapy.

Magnesium depletion and hypocalcaemia after removal of parathyroid carcinoma.

A case of parathyroid carcinoma is described which presented with severe bone disease, complicated after parathyroidectomy by symptomatic hypocalcaemia and magnesium deficiency, both of which responded dramatically to the administration of magnesium. Urinary cyclic AMP assays were used to monitor parathyroid activity.

Two cases of "pancreatic cholera" with features of peptide-secreting adenomatosis of the pancreas.

The clinical data are presented of two women with profound metabolic upset from exceptional water and electrolyte losses in diarrhoea. One had an islet-cell adenoma of the pancreas and the other abnormal islets. Gastric and pancreatic function were abnormal in both, consistent with the subsequent demonstration of a pancreatic and choleretic secretagogue in the tumour tissue and pancreatic and gastric secretagogues in circulating blood (Cleator, Thomson, Sircus, and Coombes, 1970).
