Effects of dietary protein deficiency on hepatic carbohydrate metabolism in geese.

This paper was aimed at following up the course of glucose in the liver of protein underfed geese. Compared to normally fed geese, liver carbohydrate metabolism in protein underfed animals can be characterised by lowering of free glucose content of in vitro glucose uptake and glycogen synthesis and reduction of carbohydrates in total oxidation. Glycogen content of the liver and rate of glucose oxidation were also lowered, but these differences were not statistically significant. Summing up our results and taking into consideration some literature data, an overall reduction of hepatic carbohydrate metabolism in protein underfed birds may be assumed.

Biochemical energetics of hierarchy formation in Betta splendens.

Two different stages of hierarchy formation in Betta splendens were considered. Winners and losers in a short social contact, and dominant and submissive individuals after the establishment of a hierarchy, respectively, were identified. Metabolical determinations (free glucose, glycogen and protein content, glycogen and protein synthesis, glucose and amino acid oxidation, carbohydrate degradation) were performed. Winners and dominant individuals were shown to be able to produce more energy per unit time than losers and submissives, respectively. Differences in energy metabolism between individuals found in different stages of hierarchy formation also occurred: the carbohydrate degradation reached very high values after a short social contact. This is related to the noticed substitution of aggressive encounters with threat displays in the course of cohabitation.

[The effect of various organochlorine pesticides on the immunologic reactivity of the white rat].

Wistar rats, aged 30 and 90 days, received Aldrin and Lindan treatment (8 ppm or 11 ppm) over 60 days, followed by inoculation of E. coli. The capacity of antibody formation was changed but not inhibited. Functional disorders occurred in the thymus (decline of nucleic acids), adrenal gland (decline of Vitamin C), and in the protein synthesis. The toxicity of even smaller Aldrin doses obviously was stronger than that of Lindan. The toxicity of either substance to younger animals was stronger than to individuals in more advanced age.

On the carbohydrate metabolism of pectoral muscle in the ontogeny of chicken.

1. Immediately after hatching, the pectoral muscle has a low glycogen content, and exhibits very low glycogen and high glucose and oxygen consumptions. 2. Drastic metabolic changes occur during the second day and again during the second week of life ("critical periods of the ontogenesis"); the above metabolic pattern is reversed. 3. The insulin sensitivity of the muscle is very low during these critical periods, and high between them. 4. The overall trend of metabolic ontogenesis in the pectoral muscle of the domestic fowl (non-flying bird) seems to have no functional but genetical determination.
