Transformational management style positively affects financial outcomes.

Two specific examples from the author's experience demonstrate the central theme that positive financial outcomes are a function of a transformational leadership style of management. The article focuses on participation competencies utilizing involvement, empowerment, and accountability. Developing staff and empowering them to make decisions about their work and outcomes are necessary to achieve a high-quality, cost-effective outcome, the key to financial success.

Nurse leaders: roles driving organizational transition.

Transition leaders have developed in our organizations. These roles allow nurse leaders to combine the knowledge of the customer, the art of nursing, and the chaos of health care in order to pioneer new strategies. These roles are flexible, either focused or broad, and change in scope and direction. The teams we lead are diverse in team experience, seen as disconnected from operations, and struggle with exceedingly defined or hardly evident boundaries. Methodologies add structure and foster active participation; they are fast, decisive, compressed, creating results. "Change-magic" assists in making decisions and influencing the organization to "get the job done."

A team approach to managing an information security program.

How can HIM professionals step into the spotlight as facilities establish information security policies and procedures? At Hartford Hospital, HIM practitioners collaborated with other departments and formed a team that creatively implements and manages the security process.

Utilization-focused evaluation of acute care nurse practitioner role.

Using nurse practitioners in acute care is a relatively new phenomenon with little existing data on related expectations and effectiveness. This article describes one organization's program evaluation of the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) role. It includes a conceptual model as well as pragmatic data on: perception of the performance of agreed-upon role expectations, influence on targeted aspects of care, retention of a focus on nursing, and factors facilitating or hindering APRN effectiveness.
