Explanatory model of health in bereaved parents post-fetal/infant death.

In order to identify which features contribute to attenuating or intensifying the deleterious consequences of a perinatal loss such that some family systems endure and sometimes even thrive when faced with such a situational stressor, while other family units seem to deteriorate and disintegrate under similar circumstances, an explanatory model of health was tested. The purpose of this longitudinal study was to examine how the relationships between the elements in the model namely: resources both internal (hardiness) and external (marital and social supports), as well as appraisal of the situation, predicted the health of 110 bereaved couples (husbands and wives).

[Evidence-based practice. Part 1: Origins, definitions, critiques, obstacles, advantages and impact].

The increasing popularity of evidence-based practice (EBP) requires that nurses take a stand regarding this type of practice. This positioning rests on knowledge of EBP, however this notion varies by discipline and many definitions exist even within the nursing discipline. An improved understanding of the basic tenets of this type of practice is thus essential. This first, of a series of two articles describes the origin of EBP as well as various definitions, it also presents the major criticisms raised and takes a look at the impact of the increased tendency towards EBP on professional practice.

[Evidence-based practice: Part 2: Steps in the process].

Evidence-based (EBP) aims for a new distribution of power centered on scientific evidence rather than clinical expertise. The present article describes the operational process of EBP by describing the implementation stages of this type of practise. This stage presentation is essential given that there are many conceptions end models of EBP and that some nurses have a limited knowledge of its rules ans implications. Given that number and formulation of the stages varies by author, the process presented here attempts to integrate the different stages reviewed.

Assessment of neonatal nurses' behaviors that prevent overstimulation in preterm infants.

This study assessed the adoption by neonatal nurses of behaviors that prevent visual, auditory, and tactile overstimulations in preterm infants, as well as the intentions, attitudes, and subjective norms related to the adoption of these behaviors. The convenience sample consisted of 54 neonatal nurses working in three Montreal region teaching hospitals. A multiple-choice questionnaire, composed on the basis of a review of the literature and the Theory of Reasoned Action, was used for data collection. The results revealed that the nurses often adopted behaviors that prevented tactile overstimulation, and that their intentions, attitudes, and subjective norms all favored the adoption of such behaviors. However, more than the half of the nurses did not frequently adopt behaviors that prevent visual and auditory overstimulations, nor did their intentions, attitudes, and subjective norms favor the adoption of these behaviors. Findings suggest that neonatal nurses lack specific knowledge in this area and that they would benefit from the completion of an evidence-based educational program on the prevention of overstimulation of preterm infants prior to their employment in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Translation and validation of a French version of Brown's Support Behaviors Inventory in perinatal health.

This article describes the process used for translation, testing for reliability and validity, and establishing factor structure of a French version of Brown's Support Behaviors Inventory (SBI-Fr). The objective was to provide an adequate self-report measure of satisfaction with social support during the perinatal period for use with a Francophone population in Québec, Canada. When compared with the English version, the French version had similar qualities regarding reliability and validity, but principal component analysis (N = 271) revealed that the SBI-Fr measures two distinct subscales, perceived satisfaction with partner's and others' support. The availability of the SBI-Fr will facilitate the inclusion of Francophone respondents in studies of satisfaction with social support during the perinatal period and permit cross-cultural comparison between Francophone and other populations in not only Canada but also other French-speaking countries.

Attitudes and subjective norms of male and female adolescents toward breastfeeding.

There is a lack of information regarding the attitudes of Québec's adolescents about breastfeeding and how others influence their opinions. The present study aims to describe attitudes and subjective norms of adolescent males and females toward breastfeeding and to determine whether these are related to gender, age, secondary education level, mother tongue, country of origin, feeding method as an infant, feeding method of siblings, and exposure to breastfeeding. Adolescents (N = 439) answered a questionnaire based on the theory of reasoned action. Both genders showed an overall positive attitude but negative subjective norms toward breastfeeding. Gender differences and relationships with external variables in terms of attitudes as well as subjective norms are presented. Possible avenues to promote breastfeeding are discussed.

[Attitudes and subjective norms of Quebecian adolescent mothers towards breastfeeding].

OBJECTIVES: To describe the attitudes and subjective norms of female adolescents toward breastfeeding, and to determine whether these are influenced by age, education level, mother tongue, place of birth, exposure to breastfeeding and intention to breastfeed their children. METHOD: 236 female adolescents, from four schools randomly selected among those offering education levels from secondary 1 to V 4, answered a questionnaire based on the theory of reasoned action. RESULTS: Female adolescents showed overall positive attitudes towards breastfeeding, but negative subjective norms. Older girls who were breastfed as infants and who originated from foreign countries showed the most positive attitudes towards breastfeeding. INTERPRETATION: Even though adolescent girls showed overall positive attitudes, several were unable to make up their mind. This result could be attributed to a lack of knowledge and low exposure to breastfeeding mothers. The school system plays an important role in health promotion and should expose all students to the art of breastfeeding through its health classes.
