INFOBIOMED: European Network of Excellence on Biomedical Informatics to support individualised healthcare.

INFOBIOMED is an European Network of Excellence (NoE) funded by the Information Society Directorate-General of the European Commission (EC). A consortium of European organizations from ten different countries is involved within the network. Four pilots, all related to linking clinical and genomic information, are being carried out. From an informatics perspective, various challenges, related to data integration and mining, are included.

Continuing education and community pharmacists in Galicia: a study of opinions.

AIM OF THE STUDY: To determine the opinions of a volunteer group of community pharmacists concerning general and specific issues related to continuing education. METHODS: Participants were required to complete questionnaires before and after attendance at a refresher course, and score the relevant options provided on a scale from 0 to 10. The responses of the survey were analyzed to identify preferences and to detect any possible changes in opinion. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Arithmetic means of pharmacists' opinions. RESULTS: The teaching methods preferred by the community pharmacists were workshops for resolution of practical cases (9 +/- 0.25 and 8.88 +/- 0.13) and the distance-learning computer programmes (6.74 +/- 0.25 and 8.18 +/- 0.20). In selecting which topics that should be taught, the participants gave the highest ratings to healthcare needs (8.75 +/- 0.14 and 8.57 +/- 0.15) and the demands of the pharmacists (8.15 +/- 0.16 and 8.40 +/- 0.16), with pharmaceutical care being the most requested topic (29 points). Participants preferred courses lasting 20 to 50 hours (6.94 +/- 0.26 and 7.89 +/- 0.16), without preference for schedule. CONCLUSION: Community pharmacists in Galicia show a great interest in the provision and organization of continuing education activities that meet their needs and expectations.

[Treatment of multiple myeloma with intravenous pamidronate. Pain prevention and suppression of hypercalcemia risk].

In a prospective clinical study, with the patient as its own control, we selected patients with stage III multiple myeloma. We treated them monthly with intravenous (i.v.) Disodic Pamidronate: 90 mg in 2 to 21 cycles. Four patients died during the study. The remaining 13 patients presented reduced bone resorption urinary markers (D-Pyr mainly) as well as urinary calcium (bone turnover reduction). Both effects (metabolic interchange reduction and calcium variation) did not show a direct relationship, being the 1st magnitude proportional to the baseline level and the 2nd independent from it. We noted pain reduction (VAS: visual analogs scale), low analgesic consumption, and the absence of future skeletal problems. The treatment tolerance was good. All these factors contribute to justify the welfare of the patient demonstrated by ECOG (Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group), not only improving the average results but also extending this improvement to future results. Our observation suggests that under strict procedures, this treatment could be very adequate in patients with advanced multiple myeloma independent of the state of the disease at the beginning of the study.

Application of multivariate analysis and artificial neural networks for the differentiation of red wines from the Canary Islands according to the island of origin.

Eleven metals (K, Na, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, Sr, Li, and Rb) were determined in 83 red wines from the Canary Islands. The wines presented high concentrations of Na, and the concentrations of Cu and Zn were much lower than the maximum concentrations established by the International Office of Vine and Wine (OIV). Applying principal component analysis, the dimension space was reduced to five principal components that explain 76.4% of the total variance, and the wines tend to separate on the basis of the island of production. Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) allowed a reasonable classification of wines according to the island of production. When artificial neural networks (Kohonen self-organizing maps and back-propagation feed-forward as unsupervised and supervised techniques, respectively) were applied on the matrix of data constituted by the analyzed metals, the results improved in relation to those obtained by other multivariate methods observing a differentiation of wines according to island of production.

Chemometric studies of chemical compounds in five cultivars of potatoes from Tenerife.

A statistical study of correlation and multivariate analysis on the chemical composition of five cultivars of potatoes harvested in Tenerife was carried out to establish the relationships between the chemical compounds and, therefore, to differentiate the samples according to traditional and recent importation potatoes, cultivars, and species/subspecies. A large number of significant correlations between the chemical compounds were found, which suggests biochemical relationships among them. After factor analysis, the dimension space was reduced from 24 variables to eight factors, accounting for 77.2% of the total variance. Starch, moisture, organic acids, and metals are the variables that make it possible to characterize the system without losing very much information. Total differentiation of potato samples according to the criteria species/subspecies and cultivars was obtained using discriminant analysis with all the variables. However, with only four variables (weight of tuber, starch, amylose, and glucose + fructose) it is possible to differentiate between the traditional and recent importation potatoes.

Distant collaboration in drug discovery: the LINK3D project.

The work describes the development of novel software supporting synchronous distant collaboration between scientists involved in drug discovery and development projects. The program allows to visualize and share data as well as to interact in real time using standard intranets and Internet resources. Direct visualization of 2D and 3D molecular structures is supported and original tools for facilitating remote discussion have been integrated. The software is multiplatform (MS-Windows, SGI-IRIX, Linux), allowing for a seamless integration of heterogeneous working environments. The project aims to support collaboration both within and between academic and industrial institutions. Since confidentiality is very important in some scenarios, special attention has been paid to security aspects. The article presents the research carried out to gather the requirements of collaborative software in the field of drug discovery and development and describes the features of the first fully functional prototype obtained. Real-world testing activities carried out on this prototype in order to guarantee its adequacy in diverse environments are also described and discussed.
