Temporal resolution limits of time-to-frequency transformations.

Time-to-frequency converters are devices that transfer the intensity of a light pulse to its spectrum. The two architectures of these converters are studied: a dispersive line followed by a phase modulator and a single time lens operating in the spectral Fraunhofer regime. These two configurations are shown not to be equivalent in general: the first one provides an incoherent time-to-frequency mapping, whereas the second depends on the degree of coherence of the pulse. In this case, the recorded spectrum is the intensity of a partially coherent residually dispersed pulse, and the spectral Fraunhofer condition is the requirement of negligible residual dispersion. Converters operated outside the spectral Fraunhofer limit can achieve a subpicosecond resolution with moderate time-lens phase factors. Their use for pulse characterization is briefly analyzed.

Focusing of light by zone plates in Selfoc gradient-index lenses.

We study the diffraction fields in a hybrid diffractive-gradient-index element composed of an amplitude zone plate and a quarter-pitch Selfoc gradient-index lens under uniform illumination. Focal positions of the diffractive orders and zone-plate diffraction efficiencies are measured, thereby validating the existing theoretical results.

Talbot conditions, Talbot resonators, and first-order systems.

A study of first-order Talbot resonators is presented. The general conditions for Talbot effect in ABCD systems are determined. These conditions are applied to the computation of the diffraction overlapping coefficients between array Gaussian emitters in a general first-order Talbot resonator. Relations on the ray-transfer matrix to generate the symmetric and the totally antisymmetric supermodes of the array are derived. These relations generalize the free-space, round-trip lengths of 1/2 and 1/4 of the Talbot distance. A new type of resonator based on a plano-convex gradient-index rod is proposed.
