[Neovascular glaucoma--prevention].

PURPOSE: The aim of this paper is to analyse the incidence of neovascular glaucoma on a group of patients treated by laser photocoagulation for proliferative diabetic retinopathy and retinal vascular occlusions. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We have studied a group of 277 patients: 112 male and 165 female with ages between 26 and 83 years. 256 patients had proliferative diabetic retinopathy and 21 patients retinal vascular occlusions with ischemic involvement. All this patients were treated with retinal laser photocoagulation. Follow-up period was between 6 months and 2 years. RESULTS: Only 3 patients from the entire group treated with laser photocoagulation had developed neovascular glaucoma. CONCLUSIONS: Prophylactic panretinal photocoagulation is the only method that appears to prevent the neovascular glaucoma and eliminate his devastating complications.

[Retinophotography--screening method in diabetic retinopathy].

The paper presents the modern screening method for diabetic retinopathy-the retino-photography. We present our experience on this issue, regarding the patients with diabetic retinopathy screened in Diabetic Eye Department, Ophthalmology Clinic Craiova, between October 2002-June 2005.

[The visual evoked potentials in diabetic retinopathy].

PURPOSE: The recording of Visual Evoked Potential alterations at the patients with diabetic retinopathy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: It was performed the Visual Evoked Potential recordings at 24 patients with diabetic retinopathy in different stages of evolution, with or without complications. The type of Visual Evoked Potential recording was pattern reversal with vertical bars. We followed the diagram alterations in correlation with the evolution stages of diabetic retinopathy and the visual parameter alterations. RESULTS: In all cases we recorded alteration of the Visual Evoked Potential. In nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy was noticed the delay of P100 wave with inconstant presence of the N75 and N135 waves. In proliferative diabetic retinopathy and its complications the alterations of the tract were important. CONCLUSIONS: The gradual alteration of the Visual Evoked Potential tract at the patients with diabetic retinopathy represents a prognosis of the disease.

[The visual evoked potentials in open angle glaucoma].

PURPOSE: The study purpose to analyse the variations of Visual Evoked Potentials on a group of patients with Open Angle Glaucoma. MATERIAL AND METHOD: It was performed the Visual Evoked Potential recordings on a number of patients with Open Angle Glaucoma in different stages of evolutions. Some of the patients were monitored by the Visual Evoked Potentials recordings in a dynamic way, before and after the law pressure treatment. The type of Visual Evoked Potentials recording was pattern reversal with vertical bars. RESULTS: In incipient stage of Open Angle Glaucoma the alteration of the tract was minimal with inconstant presence of the N75 and N135 waves and just a few variation of the delay of P100. In advanced stages of Open Angle Glaucoma the alterations of the tract were important: the delay of P100 wave. In absolute stage the tract was null. CONCLUSIONS: The alterations of Visual Evoked Potentials tract was influenced by the different stages of evolution of Open Angle Glaucoma. The gradual alteration of the Visual Evoked Potential tract represents a prognosis of the disease.

[Neuroprotective effect of Betoptic S-considerations after 18 months of treatment].

BACKGROUND: The aim of our study was the analysis of the hypotensor and neuroprotector effect induced by Betoptic S given to patients diagnosed with open-angled glaucoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A set of patients with open-angled glaucoma at different stages of evolution, during a period of 18 months were available for our examination. We took in to account parametres such as: ocular pressure values, fundus examination, kinetic and automatic perimetry. RESULTS: Betoptic S treatment in patients with open-angled glaucoma in early stages was efficient; therefore ocular pressure values continued in normal limits and visual capacity at automatic perimetry was improved. A number of patients in which Betoptic S didn't cause an ocular pressure compensation were given Xalatan. This association was a beneficial one. In those patients with open-angled glaucoma in terminal stage Betoptic S and Xalatan association was inefficient. In those patients which were not treated at all, visual capacity decreased to zero. CONCLUSIONS: 1. Betoptic S neuroprotector effect is obvious in early glaucoma patients; visual capacity was improved in all cases. 2. In advanced and terminal stages of the disease visual capacity goes on decreasing in spite of the associated treatment.
