Spectroscopic investigations of bis(sulfoximine) copper(II) complexes and their relevance in asymmetric catalysis.

The structure of Cu(II) complex 3 formed within the course of a stereoselective Diels-Alder reaction was investigated by EXAFS, CW-EPR at X- and W-band, HYSCORE, pulsed ENDOR, and UV-vis spectroscopy. The experimental techniques indicate that the chiral bis(sulfoximine) ligand (S,S)-1 and the dienophile form a tetragonally distorted complex in CH(2)Cl(2). The ligand binds to the Cu(II) center via the imine nitrogens, whereas the dienophile interacts via the carbonyl oxygen atoms. The additional sites of the first coordination sphere are occupied by counterions and, presumably, solvent molecules. At the axial position, a triflate anion binds via an oxygen atom.

Structural investigation of high-valent manganese-salen complexes by UV/Vis, Raman, XANES, and EXAFS spectroscopy.

XANES and EXAFS spectroscopic studies at the Mn-K- and Br-K-edge of reaction products of (S,S)-(+)-N,N'-bis(3,5-di-tert-butylsalicylidene)-1,2-cyclohexanediaminomanganese(III) chloride ([(salen)Mn(III)Cl], 1) and (S,S)-(+)-N,N'-bis(3,5-di-tert-butylsalicylidene)-1,2-cyclohexanediaminomanganese(III) bromide ([(salen)Mn(III)Br], 2) with 4-phenylpyridine N-oxide (4-PPNO) and 3-chloroperoxybenzoic acid (MCPBA) are reported. The reaction of the Mn(III) complexes with two equivalents of 4-PPNO leads to a hexacoordinated compound, in which the manganese atom is octahedrally coordinated by four oxygen/nitrogen atoms of the salen ligand at an average distance of approximately 1.90 A and two additional, axially bonded oxygen atoms of the 4-PPNO at 2.25 A. The oxidation state of this complex was determined as approximately +IV by a comparative study of Mn(III) and Mn(V) reference compounds. The green intermediate obtained in reactions of MCPBA and solutions of 1 or 2 in acetonitrile was investigated with XANES, EXAFS, UV/Vis, and Raman spectroscopy, and an increase of the coordination number of the manganese atoms from 4 to 5 and the complete abstraction of the halide was observed. A formal oxidation state of IV was deduced from the relative position of the pre-edge 1s-->3d feature of the X-ray absorption spectrum of the complex. The broad UV/Vis band of this complex in acetonitrile with lambda(max)=648 nm was consistent with a radical cation structure, in which a MCPBA molecule was bound to the Mn(IV) central atom. An oxomanganese(V) or a dimeric manganese(IV) species was not detected.

Synthesis of novel chiral phosphinocyrhetrenyloxazoline ligands and their application in asymmetric catalysis.

Several novel planar chiral phosphinocyrhetrenyloxazolines have been synthesized, and their catalytic activities have been evaluated in a variety of asymmetric catalytic reactions. Preferable effects as compared to their ferrocenyl analogues have been observed in asymmetric allylic amination and asymmetric hydrosilylation, and up to 97% ee and 72% ee were reached, respectively. The Lewis basicity of the phosphorus on the ferrocene and the cyrhetrene, which contributes to their different behavior in catalysis, has been deduced by 31P NMR spectroscopy analysis, as indicated by 1J(77Se-31P) in the corresponding phosphine selenides.

Catalyzed asymmetric aryl transfer reactions to aldehydes with boronic acids as aryl source.

Chiral diaryl methanols are important intermediates for the synthesis of biologically active compounds. Here, we describe a flexible method for their catalyzed asymmetric synthesis from readily available starting materials. Noteworthy is the fact that with a single catalyst both enantiomers of the product are accessible simply by choosing the appropriate combination of aryl boronic acid or aldehyde as aryl donor and acceptor, respectively. The catalysis with a planar-chiral ferrocene is easy to perform and yields a broad range of products with excellent enantioselectivities (up to 98% ee).

Baeyer-Villiger oxidation in compressed CO2.

The aerobic Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of a wide range of ketones, both cyclic and acyclic to the corresponding esters or lactones can be efficiently carried out in compressed carbon dioxide in the presence of an aldehyde as co-reductant.

Polymer-supported ferrocenyl oxazolines for the catalyzed highly enantioselective phenyl transfer to aldehydes.

A new chiral MeO-PEG-supported ferrocenyl oxazoline was synthesized and successfully employed in the enantioselective phenyl transfer to aldehydes. The products were obtained in high yields and with excellent enantioselectivities (up to 97% ee). Furthermore, the recovery of the ferrocene was facile, and catalyst efficiency was maintained in subsequent reactions.

Synthesis and use of alpha-silyl-substituted alpha-hydroxyacetic acids.

[reaction: see text] Rhodium-catalyzed oxygen transfer was used to generate benzyl 2-silyl-2-oxoacetates in good yields. The hydrogenation of these compounds led to chiral alpha-silyl-substituted alpha-hydroxyacetic acids. Resolution by means of HPLC using a chiral stationary phase afforded an enantiomerically pure representative of this class of compounds, which was successfully applied as a chiral ligand in an asymmetric aldol-type reaction.

Synthesis and properties of ionic liquids derived from the 'chiral pool'.

New chiral ionic liquids have been synthesised which are directly derived from the 'chiral pool' and therefore readily available in kg scale; NMR-measurements indicate that these liquids may be interesting solvents for enantioselective reactions and useful in chiral separation techniques.

Stress computed tomography for evaluating posterolateral knee laxity.

A new method is presented to quantify the extent of posterolateral knee laxity. Stress computed tomography (CT) is performed to determine external rotation of the tibia on both knees. Manual maximum external torque is applied to the tibia from both feet by an examiner while both femurs are stabilized by a tape at approximately 30 degree of knee flexion. CT images are acquired at this position and side-to-side differences of external rotation are determined from the images by standard computer software. The technique is simple and helps to quantify posterolateral knee laxity before and after surgical procedures of posterolateral knee reconstruction.

Catalyzed Asymmetric Arylation Reactions.

Addition and substitution reactions with carbon nucleophiles are fundamental processes in organic synthesis, and the development of general catalytic asymmetric variants thereof is still a major challenge today. In contrast to enantioselective alkyl transfer reactions, the corresponding arylations have not yet reached a high level of maturity. The existing protocols are either of no general applicability or are limited in terms of selectivity. This article summarizes established routes for catalytic asymmetric aryl transfer together with the latest developments in this area. The scope and limitations of this reaction are discussed.
