Epitaxial stabilization of ferromagnetism in the nanophase of FeGe.

Epitaxial nanocrystals of FeGe have been stabilized on Ge(111). The nanocrystals assume a quasi-one-dimensional shape as they grow exclusively along the <110> direction of the Ge(111) substrate, culminating in a compressed monoclinic modification of FeGe. Whereas monoclinic FeGe is antiferromagnetic in the bulk, the nanowires are surprisingly strong ferromagnets below approximately 200 K with an average magnetic moment of 0.8 microB per Fe atom. Density functional calculations indicate an unusual stabilization mechanism for the observed ferromagnetism: lattice compression destabilizes the antiferromagnetic Peierls-like ground state observed in the bulk while increased p-d hybridization suppresses the magnetic moments and stabilizes ferromagnetism.

Single-electron tunneling spectroscopy of single C60 in double-barrier tunnel junction.

The single-electron tunneling (SET) spectroscopy of C(60) molecule in a double-barrier tunnel junction is investigated by combining the scanning tunneling spectroscopy experiment and the theoretical simulation using the modified orthodox theory. The interplay between the SET effect and the discrete energy levels of C(60) molecule is studied. Three types of SET spectroscopies with different characters are obtained, corresponding to different tunneling processes and consistent with the previous theoretical prediction. Both the charging mode and resonance mode can arouse the current increase in the SET spectroscopy. The resonance mode is realized mainly by two mechanisms, including the resonance when the electron spans the second junction after already spanning the first junction. Some previous confused results have been clarified. Our results show that three types of SET spectroscopies can be together examined to quantitatively determine the frontier orbitals of the nanostructure by identifying the modes of various current increases.

Linear magnetization dependence of the intrinsic anomalous Hall effect.

The anomalous Hall effect is investigated experimentally and theoretically for ferromagnetic thin films of Mn5Ge3. We have separated the intrinsic and extrinsic contributions to the experimental anomalous Hall effect and calculated the intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity from the Berry curvature of the Bloch states using first-principles methods. The intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity depends linearly on the magnetization, which can be understood from the long-wavelength fluctuations of the spin orientation at finite temperatures. The quantitative agreement between theory and experiment is remarkably good, not only near 0 K but also at finite temperatures, up to about approximately 240 K (0.8TC).

Single C59N molecule as a molecular rectifier.

We report a new kind of experimental realization of a molecular rectifier, which is based on a single azafullerene C59N molecule in a double-barrier tunnel junction via the single electron tunneling effect. An obvious rectifying effect is observed. The positive onset voltage is about 0.5-0.7 V, while the negative onset voltage is about 1.6-1.8 V. Theoretical analyses show that the half-occupied molecular orbital of the C59N molecule and the asymmetric shift of the molecular Fermi level when the molecule is charged are responsible for the molecular rectification.

Low-temperature orientationally ordered structures of two-dimensional C60.

Orientationally ordered structures of two-dimensional (2D) C(60) at low temperature have been investigated theoretically and experimentally. Using total energy optimization with a phenomenological potential, we find the ground state is a close packed hexagonal lattice in which all the molecules have the same orientation. Several local minima of the potential energy surface are found to be associated with other 1 x 1 lattices as well as 2 x 2 lattices. The energies of the orientational domain boundaries of the 1x1 lattices are also computed, and two kinds of which yield negative values. A majority of these theoretical findings are confirmed by our low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy study of a 2D C(60) array supported on a self-assembled monolayer.
