Conductivity of ZnO nanowires, nanoparticles, and thin films using time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy.

The terahertz absorption coefficient, index of refraction, and conductivity of nanostructured ZnO have been determined using time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy, a noncontact optical probe. ZnO properties were measured directly for thin films and were extracted from measurements of nanowire arrays and mesoporous nanoparticle films by applying Bruggeman effective medium theory to the composite samples. Annealing significantly reduces the intrinsic carrier concentration in the ZnO films and nanowires, which were grown by chemical bath deposition. The complex-valued, frequency-dependent photoconductivities for all morphologies were found to be similar at short pump-probe delay times. Fits using the Drude-Smith model show that films have the highest mobility, followed by nanowires and then nanoparticles, and that annealing the ZnO increases its mobility. Time constants for decay of photoinjected electron density in films are twice as long as those in nanowires and more than 5 times those for nanoparticles due to increased electron interaction with interfaces and grain boundaries in the smaller-grained materials. Implications for electron transport in dye-sensitized solar cells are discussed.

Dynamics of water confined within reverse micelles.

We report structural and dynamical properties of water confined within reverse micelles (RMs) ranging in size from R = 10 A to R = 23 A as determined from molecular dynamics simulations. The low-frequency infrared spectra have been calculated using linear response theory and depend linearly on the fraction of bulklike water within the RMs. Furthermore, these spectra show nearly isosbestic behavior in the region near 660 cm(-1). Both of these characteristics are present in previously measured experimental spectra. The single dipole spectra for interfacial trapped, bound, and bulklike water within the RMs have also been calculated and show region-dependent frequency shifts. Specifically, the bound and trapped water spectra have a peak at lower frequencies than that for the inner core water. We therefore assign the low-frequency band in the IR spectra to bound and trapped interfacial water. Finally, region-dependent hydrogen bonding profiles and spatial distribution functions are also presented.

Progress towards two-dimensional biomedical imaging with THz spectroscopy.

Terahertz spectroscopy represents a frontier in the field of biomedical imaging. It is possible to image complex objects that are opaque to visible and infrared light. In this paper, we have used THz imaging to reveal the structure inside a sunflower seed. We compare images based on time- and frequency-domain representations of the THz scans, and conclude that for this type of specimen the time-domain THz scans provide more detailed information than their frequency-domain counterparts.

A new method for measuring intramolecular charge transfer.

The direct measurement of intramolecular electron transfer through detection of the electromagnetic (EM) waveform that is emitted during this process is reviewed. The waveform is detected in the time-domain via free-space electro-optic sampling and then related to the dynamics of the charge transfer event. Electromagnetic generation from two systems, Betaine-30 in chloroform and DMANS in toluene, are studied to illustrate this technique. A finite-difference time-domain calculation with a time-dependent polarization is used to model the EM generation and propagation through the solution. This method is very general since the movement of charge itself generates the EM waveform, and is sensitive to charge transfer occurring on a 0.1-10 ps timescale. The potential for studying the primary steps of charge transfer in photosynthetic bacteria is also discussed.
