Acyclic tautomers in crystalline carbohydrates: the keto forms of 1-deoxy-1-carboxymethylamino-D-2-pentuloses (pentulose-glycines).

NMR and X-ray diffraction studies on acyclic carbohydrate keto tautomers of N-(1-deoxy-d-erythro-2-pentulos-1-yl)- and N-(1-deoxy-d-threo-2-pentulos-1-yl)glycines (ribulose-glycine, 1 and xylulose-glycine, 2), are reported. In aqueous solutions, both 1 and 2 exist as a tautomeric mixture, with the beta-furanose as a major form, followed by the alpha-furanose and the acyclic keto tautomer. Both 1 and 2 crystallize as zwitterions in the acyclic keto form. Solid-state 13C NMR spectra reveal the existence of two crystallographically independent molecules in 2 but only one in crystalline 1. The structure of 2 was solved by X-ray diffraction; in the crystal, two conformational isomers, 2a and 2b in a 1:1 ratio, were identified. The conformers are packed in stacks of similar molecules, with a system of intermolecular hydrogen bonds involving all hydroxyl, ammonium, and carboxyl groups. The structural data indicate that the sugar portion of acyclic 2 adopts conformations similar to those proposed for the parent d-xylulose.

Two (E,E)- and (Z,E)-thiazol-5-ylpenta-2,4-dienones.

In order to characterize the structural elements that might play a role in non-covalent DNA binding by the antitumor antibiotic leinamycin, we have solved the crystal structures of the two leinamycin analogs, methyl (R)-5-[2-[1-(tert-butoxycarbonylamino)ethyl]thiazol-4-yl]penta-(E,E)-2,4-dienoate, C(16)H(22)N(2)O(4)S, (II), and 2-methyl-8-oxa-16-thia-3,17-diazabicyclo[12.2.1]heptadeca-(Z,E)-1(17),10,12,14-tetraene-4,9-dione, C(14)H(16)N(2)O(3)S, (III). The penta-2,4-dienone moiety in both of these analogs adopts a conformation close to planarity, with the thiazole ring twisted out of the plane by 12.9 (2) degrees in (II) and by 21.4 (4) degrees in (III).

One- and two-dimensional silver-coordination networks containing pi-sandwiched silver-silver interactions.

The self-assembly of coordination networks from reaction of 2,4,6-trimesityl-1,3,5-triazine and silver(I) trifluoroacetate is described. A one-dimensional linear polymer is formed from solutions deficient in silver while a two-dimensional, graphite-like sheet is formed from solutions containing 3 equiv of silver per triazine. The structurally similar networks both contain triazine rings separated by two trifluoroacetate-bridged silver atoms. The two silver atoms are effectively sandwiched between two mesityl rings with intermediate arene-silver interactions. The silver-silver bond lengths are 2.9731(4) and 2.9246(5) A in the one-dimensional network and 2.8842(4) A in the two-dimensional network.

Potent enantioselective auxin: indole-3-succinic acid.

Low levels of synthetic auxins are used as root growth promoters for a wide variety of botanicals. When properly used, they can produce earlier and more prolific root growth. Indole-3-succinic acid (ISA) is a chiral compound that can be synthesized as a racemate. Its enantiomers were resolved by both chromatography and diastereomeric crystallization. The absolute configuration of each enantiomer was determined by X-ray crystallography and then tested for auxin activity. The relative effectiveness of the ISA enantiomers was determined and compared to the achiral synthetic auxin indole-3-butyric acid and to the natural auxin indole-3-acetic acid.

New terpenoid constituents from Eunicea pinta.

The secondary metabolite composition of the gorgonian octocoral Eunicea pinta from San Andrés Island, Colombia, is described for the first time. This investigation has resulted in the isolation of eight new gamma-cembranolide-type diterpenes, namely, compounds 3-10, and a new saponin, 13, possessing a pregnene-derived aglycon. In addition, two previously known alpha-methylene-gamma-lactone cembranolides, euniolide (1) and succinolide (2), were also isolated. Their structures were determined on the basis of the results of spectroscopic analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, and chemical conversions. The discovery of cembranolides 3-10 has prompted us to conclude that the structures proposed earlier for several uprolide-type cembranolides need revision and that a minor stereochemical correction is also in order for succinolide. Cytotoxicity of compounds 3, 4, and 13 toward various cancer cell lines and results of an antimycobacterial screening for 2, 4, and 13 also are described.
