Dendron-tethered and templated CdS quantum dots on single-walled carbon nanotubes.

CdS nanoparticles on the surface of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were templated and stabilized through the initial attachment of 1 --> 3 C-branched amide-based dendrons and were both photophysically and morphologically characterized. The CdS clusters were shown to be ca. 1.4 nm in diameter as calculated from their optical absorption spectra and exhibited reduced fluorescence emission intensity at 434 nm compared to that of CdS quantum dots stabilized by untethered dendrons due to partial emission quenching by the SWNT. Unchanged UV absorption behavior of these materials indicated that they are stable > 90 days at 25 degrees C.

Design, synthesis and photoelectrochemical properties of hexagonal metallomacrocycles based on triphenylamine: [M6(4,4'-bis(2,2':6',2''-terpyridinyl)triphenylamine)6(X)12]; [M = Fe(II), PF6- and Zn(II), BF4-].

Synthesis of a novel bis(terpyridine) ligand, 4,4'-bis(2,2':6',2''-terpyridinyl)triphenylamine, utilizing triphenylamine, as a specific angle controller, has led to the self-assembly of a unique hexagonal metallomacrocycle family, [Fe6(2)6(PF6)12] and [Zn6(2)6(BF4)12], utilizing terpyridine-metal(II)-terpyridine connectivity. The crystal structure of the novel ligand shows that the angle between the two terpyridinyl moieties is 119.69 degrees , which enabled the formation of the hexagonal-shaped macrocycles. The crystal packing architectures of this starting ligand revealed channels induced by solvent encapsulation. Following complexation of this ligand with transition metals [Fe(II) or Zn(II)] in a one-pot reaction, the resultant structures were characterized by (1)H and (13)C NMR, UV/Vis and mass spectroscopies. The expected metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT; lambda(max) = 582 nm) and emission (lambda(em) = 575 nm) characteristics were exhibited by both [Fe6(2)6(PF6)12] and[Zn6(2)6(BF4)12]. The photoelectrochemical characteristics of these hexagonal metallomacrocycles demonstrate that they can be used as sensitizers in dye-sensitized solar cells.

Nanoassembly of a fractal polymer: a molecular "Sierpinski hexagonal gasket".

Mathematics and art converge in the fractal forms that also abound in nature. We used molecular self-assembly to create a synthetic, nanometer-scale, Sierpinski hexagonal gasket. This nondendritic, perfectly self-similar fractal macromolecule is composed of bis-terpyridine building blocks that are bound together by coordination to 36 Ru and 6 Fe ions to form a nearly planar array of increasingly larger hexagons around a hollow center.

Design, synthesis, and characterization of conifer-shaped dendritic architectures.

An elongated structural design leading to more conical-shaped dendritic architectures by using a combination of 1-->3, 1-->(2+1), and 1-->(2+1 Me) C-branched monomers is presented. Synthesis of the conifer-shaped macromolecule was achieved by reaction between isocyanate 20 and amine 26 in dry CH2Cl2. A resultant extended focal adamantane-modified dendron was deprotected to generate the water-soluble product, which was subsequently complexed with beta-cyclodextrin in D2O to create the desired tree-like product. Host-guest interactions of the adamantane moiety with the beta-cyclodextrin cavity were monitored by 1H NMR spectroscopy. All monomers, key intermediates, and final products were fully characterized by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, ESI or MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, and IR spectroscopy.

Synthesis and single-crystal X-ray characterization of 4,4"-functionalized 4'-(4-bromophenyl)-2,2':6',2"-terpyridines.

To expand the utility of bis(terpyridine) metal connectivity, the selective symmetrical and unsymmetrical 4,4"-functionalization (-CN, -Me, -CO2Me) of 4'-(4-bromophenyl)-2,2':6',2"-terpyridines was achieved using the Kröhnke synthesis. The final substituted 2,2':6',2"-terpyridines along with their corresponding intermediates, 4a-c, were recrystallized and characterized by 1H NMR and 13C NMR as well as X-ray crystallography; COSY correlations were also conducted to permit definitive proton assignment.

Convenient synthesis of 1 --> 3 C-branched dendrons.

A facile, efficient synthesis of 1 --> 3 C-branched polyamide dendrons is described. Treatment of acryloyl chloride with 1 --> 3 C-branched amines, e.g., di-tert-butyl 4-[2-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)ethyl]-4-aminoheptanedioate, gave the corresponding acrylamides in high yields, which upon reaction with nitromethane generated the homologated nitroalkane-polyesters. Finally, nitroalkane alkylation with 2 equiv of the acrylamides, followed by nitro group reduction, afforded the desired amino-polyesters.

Towards ordered architectures: self-assembly and stepwise procedures to the hexameric metallomacrocycles [arylbis(terpyridinyl)6FeII6-n-RuIIn] (n=0,2,3,5).

Hexameric metallomacrocycles are a new class of ordered rigid-macromolecules which possess unique structural, electronic, and physical characteristics. Directed- and self-assembly methods for the construction of these stable bis(terpyridine)-based materials are investigated by using both Fe(II) and Ru(II) as the coordinating metals. These heterometallomacrocycles and their homocounterparts are structurally compared, and their attendant electrochemical properties are analyzed and evaluated. These studies demonstrate the potential to create stable, nanoscale, doughnut-shaped, molecular assemblies with envisioned ramifications for energy storage and release, as well as nanoscale molecular electronic and magnetic devices.

Routes to metallodendrimers: synthesis of isomeric neutral metallomacromolecules based on bis(2,2':6',2"-terpyridine)ruthenium(II) connectivity.

Routes for the syntheses of isomeric, zwitterionic, bisterpyridine-Ru(II)-based macromolecules are described. Access to these novel architectures is facilitated by the construction of terpyridine-modified, 1-->3 C-branched, ester-terminated building blocks. Constitutional isomers result from the interchangable placement of methyl and tert-butyl ester groups on both the branched framework near the Ru(II) centers and the termini of the branched construct. Water solubility is imparted to each isomer through selective transformation of the tert-butyl esters to their corresponding carboxylates. Along with the standard characterization techniques, electrochemical and spectroscopic data also support the structural formation.

Hexagonal terpyridine--ruthenium and -iron macrocyclic complexes by stepwise and self-assembly procedures.

Methods for the self-assembly, as well as directed construction, of hexaruthenium metallomacrocycles employing bisterpyridine building blocks are described. Self-assembly is effected by a combination of equimolar mixtures of bismetalated and nonmetalated bis(terpyridinyl) monomers each possessing the requisite planar, 60 degrees, terpyridine-metal-terpyridine connectivity. Stepwise synthesis of the identical hexamer is also discussed and used to aid in verification of the self-assembled product. Preparation and analysis of the related FeII metallomacrocycle are detailed and its TEM image confirms the hexameric structure. Characterization of the metalated products includes cyclic voltammetry along with the routine analytical techniques.
