Fluorophore-appended steroidal saponin (dioscin and polyphyllin D) derivatives.

The synthesis of three fluorophore-appended derivatives of dioscin and polyphyllin D is reported herein. Starting from trillin, dansyl derivatives A-C were prepared in overall yields of 7-12% over 7-10 steps. A study of their behavior in a variety of polar solvents suggests that dansyl derivatives A-C are capable of micellar self-assembly and can maintain cytotoxicities (IC50 = 15-18 muM) against the HeLa carcinoma cell line evaluated by standard MTT assay. Ruthenium porphyrin catalyzed tandem sulfonium/ammonium ylide formation and [2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement. A concise synthesis of (+/-)-platynecine.

meso-Tetrakis(p-tolyl)porphyrinatoruthenium(II) carbonyl, [Ru(II)(TTP)(CO)], can effect intermolecular sulfonium and ammonium ylide formation by catalytic decomposition of diazo compounds such as ethyl diazoacetate (EDA) in the presence of allyl sulfides and amines. Exclusive formation of [2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement products (70-80% yields) was observed without [1,2]-rearrangement products being detected. The Ru-catalyzed reaction of EDA with disubstituted allyl sulfides such as crotyl sulfide produced an equimolar mixture of anti- and syn-2-(ethylthio)-3-methyl-4-pentenoic acid ethyl ester. The analogous "EDA + N,N-dimethylcrotylamine" reaction afforded a mixture of anti- and syn-2-(N,N-dimethylamino)-3-methyl-4-pentenoic acid ethyl esters with a diastereoselectivity of 3:1. The observed catalytic activity of [Ru(II)(TTP)(CO)] for the ylide [2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement is comparable to the reported examples involving [Rh(2)(CH(3)CO(2))(4)] and [Cu(acac)(2)] as catalyst. Similarly, cyclic sulfonium and ammonium ylides can be produced by intramolecular reaction of a diazo group tethered to allyl sulfides and amines under the [Ru(II)(TTP)(CO)]-catalyzed reaction conditions. The subsequent [2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement of the cyclic ylides furnished 2-allyl-substituted sulfur and nitrogen heterocycles in good yields (>90%). By employing [Ru(II)(TTP)(CO)] as catalyst, the cyclic ammonium ylide [2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement reaction was successfully applied for the total synthesis of (+/-)-platynecine starting from cis-2-butenediol.

Self-aggregated phosphorescent platinum(II) polymeric material from modified poly(4-vinylpyridine).

A solvochromic material made from incorporation of photoluminescent Pt(II)([formula: see text]) moieties into commercially available homopolymer poly(4-vinylpyridine) exhibits different emission energies, due to different degrees of self-aggregation in various solvents and as thin film upon exposure to vapour of different volatile organic compounds (VOC); self-aggregation enables intra- and intermolecular interactions arising from pi-stacking of the Pt([formula: see text]) moieties, which is affected by medium polarity.

Spectral, structural, and electrochemical properties of ruthenium porphyrin diaryl and aryl(alkoxycarbonyl) carbene complexes: influence of carbene substituents, porphyrin substituents, and trans-axial ligands.

A wide variety of ruthenium porphyrin carbene complexes, including [Ru(tpfpp)(CR(1)R(2))] (CR(1)R(2) = C(p-C(6)H(4)Cl)(2) 1 b, C(p-C(6)H(4)Me)(2) 1 c, C(p-C(6)H(4)OMe)(2) 1 d, C(CO(2)Me)(2) 1 e, C(p-C(6)H(4)NO(2))CO(2)Me 1 f, C(p-C(6)H(4)OMe)CO(2)Me 1 g, C(CH==CHPh)CO(2)CH(2)(CH==CH)(2)CH(3) 1 h), [Ru(por)(CPh(2))] (por=tdcpp 2 a, 4-Br-tpp 2 b, 4-Cl-tpp 2 c, 4-F-tpp 2 d, tpp 2 e, ttp 2 f, 4-MeO-tpp 2 g, tmp 2 h, 3,4,5-MeO-tpp 2 i), [Ru(por)[C(Ph)CO(2)Et]] (por=tdcpp 2 j, tmp 2 k), [Ru(tpfpp)(CPh(2))(L)] (L = MeOH 3 a, EtSH 3 b, Et(2)S 3 c, MeIm 3 d, OPPh(3) 3 e, py 3 f), and [Ru(tpfpp)[C(Ph)CO(2)R](MeOH)] (R = CH(2)CH==CH(2) 4 a, Me 4 b, Et 4 c), were prepared from the reactions of [Ru(por)(CO)] with diazo compounds N(2)CR(1)R(2) in dichloromethane and, for 3 and 4, by further treatment with reagents L. A similar reaction of [Os(tpfpp)(CO)] with N(2)CPh(2) in dichloromethane followed by treatment with MeIm gave [Os(tpfpp)(CPh(2))(MeIm)] (3 d-Os). All these complexes were characterized by (1)H NMR, (13)C NMR, and UV/Vis spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and elemental analyses. X-ray crystal structure determinations of 1 d, 2 a,i, 3 a, b, d, e, 4 a-c, and 3 d-Os revealed Ru==C distances of 1.806(3)-1.876(3) A and an Os==C distance of 1.902(3) A. The structure of 1 d in the solid state features a unique "bridging" carbene ligand, which results in the formation of a one-dimensional coordination polymer. Cyclic voltammograms of 1 a-c, g, 2 a-d, g-k, 3 b-d, 4 a, b, and 3 d-Os show a reversible oxidation couple with E(1/2) values in the range of 0.06-0.65 V (vs Cp(2)Fe(+/0)) that is attributable to a metal-centered oxidation. The influence of carbene substituents, porphyrin substituents, and trans-ligands on the Ru==C bond was examined through comparison of the chemical shifts of the pyrrolic protons in the porphyrin macrocycles ((1)H NMR) and the M==C carbon atoms ((13)C NMR), the potentials of the metal-centered oxidation couples, and the Ru==C distances among the various ruthenium porphyrin carbene complexes. A direct comparison among iron, ruthenium, and osmium porphyrin carbene complexes is made.

Ruthenium(II) porphyrin-catalyzed amidation of aromatic heterocycles.

[reaction: see text] Ruthenium(II) porphyrin-catalyzed amidation of aromatic heterocycles with iminoiodanes under mild conditions (CH(2)Cl(2), 4 A molecular sieves, ultrasound, 40 degrees C) was achieved in moderate to good yields (up to 84%) and conversions (up to 99%). Only the N,N-ditosylamidated product was obtained for reactions involving heteroarenes, where X = O, S, or NTs. N-Alkyl- and N-aryl-substituted pyrroles, on the other hand, were shown to give the 3,4-diaminated adduct.

Structural and spectroscopic studies on Pt.Pt and pi-pi interactions in luminescent multinuclear cyclometalated platinum(II) homologues tethered by oligophosphine auxiliaries.

The synthesis and structural, spectroscopic, and electrochemical properties of a series of trinuclear tridentate cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes tethered by bis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)phenylphosphine (dpmp) have been studied and compared with their mono- and binuclear homologues and a propeller-like congener. The X-ray crystal structures of several derivatives show the presence of a variety of intramolecular Pt.Pt, pi-pi, and C-H...O(crown ether) and intermolecular pi-pi interactions. The trinuclear complexes display strong absorption in the 400-600 nm region and show intense red to near-infrared phosphorescence with microsecond lifetimes in fluid and glassy solutions and in the solid state. These emissions are generally assigned as (3)MMLCT [dsigma-->pi(CNN)] in nature. The close similarities between the emission energies in acetonitrile solution and in the solid state at 298 K indicate that comparable Pt.Pt and pi-pi configurations are maintained in both media, and hence a relationship between the photophysical behavior of these lumophores and their solid-state structural features is proposed. The tendencies of the absorption and emission energies to red-shift from mono- to linearly tethered bi- and trinuclear Pt(II) species are evident. A light-emitting electrochemical cell using a trinuclear Pt(II) derivative as emitter has been demonstrated.

Electronic spectroscopy, photophysical properties, and emission quenching studies of an oxidatively robust perfluorinated platinum porphyrin.

The highly electron-deficient, beta-octafluorinated meso-tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)-porphyrin (H(2)F(28)TPP) was metalated with platinum to afford the oxidatively robust luminophore [PtF(28)TPP], and its X-ray structure shows that the porphyrin core exists in a slightly saddle-shaped conformation. The absorption spectrum of [PtF(28)TPP] in CH(2)Cl(2) displays a near-UV Soret band (B) at 383 nm (epsilon = 2.85 x 10(5) dm(3) mol(-1) cm(-1)) and two visible Q(1,0) and Q(0,0) bands at 501 (epsilon = 1.45 x 10(4) dm(3) mol(-1) cm(-1)) and 533 (epsilon = 1.36 x 10(4) dm(3) mol(-1) cm(-1)) nm, respectively. These absorption bands of [PtF(28)TPP] are blue-shifted from those in [PtF(20)TPP] (390, 504, and 538 nm, respectively) and [PtTPP] (401, 509, and 539 nm, respectively). Excitation of [PtF(28)TPP] (complex concentration = 1.5 x 10(-6) mol dm(-3)) in dichloromethane at the Soret or Q(1,0) or Q(0,0) band gave a phosphorescence with peak maximum at 650 nm (lifetime = 5.8 micros) and a weak shoulder at 712 nm. Both the emission lifetime and quantum yield vary with solvent polarity, and plots of tau versus E(K) and Phi versus E(K) (where E(K) is the empirical solvent polarity parameter based on the hypsochromic shift of the longest wavelength absorption of the [Mo(CO)(4)[(C(5)H(4)N)HC[double bond]NCH(2)C(6)H(5)]] complex with increasing solvent polarity; see: Kamlet, M. J.; Abboud, J. L. M.; Taft, R. W. Prog. Phys. Org. Chem. 1981, 13, pp 485-630) show linear correlation, indicating that the emission is sensitive to the local environment/medium. Electrochemical studies on [PtF(28)TPP] by cyclic voltammetry showed no porphyrin-centered oxidation at potential < or = 1.5 V versus Ag/AgNO(3), demonstrating that [PtF(28)TPP] is more resistant toward oxidation than [PtF(20)TPP] (E(1/2) = 1.33 V) and [PtTPP] (E(1/2) = 0.97 V). The porphyrin-centered reduction of [PtF(28)TPP] occurs at -0.75 and -1.18 V, which is anodically shifted from those at -1.06 and -1.55 V in [PtF(20)TPP], and -1.51 V in [PtTPP], respectively. The excited-state reduction potential of [PtF(28)TPP] is estimated to be 1.49 V versus Ag/AgNO(3). Over 97% of the emission intensity of [PtF(28)TPP] was retained after irradiation with a high power mercury arc lamp (500 W) for 14 h, compared to 90% and 12% for [PtF(20)TPP] and [PtTPP], respectively; hence, [PtF(28)TPP] exhibits superior photostability. Quenching of the emission of [PtF(28)TPP] by oxygen, alcohol, catechol, and butylamine reveals that [PtF(28)TPP] is an oxidatively robust material with medium-sensitive photoluminescence properties.

Intramolecular C-N bond formation reactions catalyzed by ruthenium porphyrins: amidation of sulfamate esters and aziridination of unsaturated sulfonamides.

Ruthenium porphyrins [Ru(F(20)-TPP)(CO)] (F(20)-TPP = 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrinato dianion) and [Ru(Por*)(CO)] (Por = 5,10,15,20-tetrakis[(1S,4R,5R,8S)-1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8-octahydro-1,4:5,8-dimethanoanthracen-9-yl]porphyrinato dianion) catalyzed intramolecular amidation of sulfamate esters p-X-C(6)H(4)(CH(2))(2)OSO(2)NH(2) (X = Cl, Me, MeO), XC(6)H(4)(CH(2))(3)OSO(2)NH(2) (X = p-F, p-MeO, m-MeO), and Ar(CH(2))(2)OSO(2)NH(2) (Ar = naphthalen-1-yl, naphthalen-2-yl) with PhI(OAc)(2) to afford the corresponding cyclic sulfamidates in up to 89% yield with up to 100% substrate conversion; up to 88% ee was attained in the asymmetric intramolecular amidation catalyzed by [Ru(Por)(CO)]. Reaction of [Ru(F(20)-TPP)(CO)] with PhI[double bond]NSO(2)OCH(2)CCl(3) (prepared by treating the sulfamate ester Cl(3)CCH(2)OSO(2)NH(2) with PhI(OAc)(2)) afforded a bis(imido)ruthenium(VI) porphyrin, [Ru(VI)(F(20)-TPP)(NSO(2)OCH(2)CCl(3))(2)], in 60% yield. A mechanism involving reactive imido ruthenium porphyrin intermediate was proposed for the ruthenium porphyrin-catalyzed intramolecular amidation of sulfamate esters. Complex [Ru(F(20)-TPP)(CO)] is an active catalyst for intramolecular aziridination of unsaturated sulfonamides with PhI(OAc)(2), producing corresponding bicyclic aziridines in up to 87% yield with up to 100% substrate conversion and high turnover (up to 2014).

Highly selective intra- and intermolecular coupling reactions of diazo compounds to form cis-alkenes using a ruthenium porphyrin catalyst.

[Ru(2,6-Cl(2)TPP)(CO)] catalyzed intramolecular coupling reactions of bisdiazoacetates and intermolecular coupling reactions of monodiazoacetates to afford the coupling products in up to 76% and 93% yields, respectively. Cuprophilic interactions in luminescent copper(I) clusters with bridging bis(dicyclohexylphosphino)methane and iodide ligands: spectroscopic and structural investigations.

Polynuclear copper(I) complexes with bridging bis(dicyclohexylphosphino)methane (dcpm) and iodide ligands, [Cu(2)(dcpm)(2)(CH(3)CN)(2)](BF(4))(2) (1), [Cu(2)(dcpm)(2)](BF(4))(2) (2), [(CuI)(3)(dcpm)(2)] (3), [(CuI)(4)(dcpm)(2)] (4), and [(CuI)(2)(dcpm)(2)] (5) were prepared and their structures determined by X-ray crystal analysis. The shortest Cu--Cu distance found in these complexes is 2.475(1) A for 3. Powdered samples of 1, 3, 4, and 5 display intense and long-lived phosphorescence with lambda(max) at 460, 626, 590, and 456 nm and emission quantum yields of 0.26, 0.11, 0.12, and 0.56 at room temperature, respectively. In the solid state, 2 displays both a weak emission at 377 and an intense one at 474 nm with an overall emission yield 0.42. The difference in emission properties among complexes 1-5 suggests that both Cu--Cu interaction and coordination around the copper(I) center affect the excited state properties. A degassed solution of 2 in acetone gives a bright red emission with lambda(max) at 625 nm at room temperature. The difference absorption spectra of the triplet excited states of 1-5 in acetonitrile show broad absorption peaks at 340-410 and 850-870 nm.
