Two new species of taeniacanthid copepods (Poecilostomatoida) parasitic on marine fishes of Taiwan.

Two new species of copepods (Poecilostomatoida Taeniacanthidae) parasitic on fishes of Taiwan are reported. They are: Irodes parupenei n. sp. from Parupeneus spilurus (Bleeker) and P. multifasciatus (Quoy & Gaimard), and Taeniacanthus spiniferus n. sp. from Acanthocepola limbata Valenciennes. I. parupenei is characteristic in having nine (instead of eight) elements on the terminal segment of leg 2 exopod, a spiniform element (instead of a long, plumose seta) on the medial margin of the proximal segment of leg 4 endopod, and thee spines and one long, naked seta (rather than four short setae) on the slender (rather than spatula-like), terminal segment of leg 5. T. spiniferus is distinguished from its 38 congeners in carrying a pair of sharp tines in the ventral area of the rostrum.

Characteristics of airflow in a CT-based ovine lung: a numerical study.

The transient airflow in a rigid, asymmetric monopodial sheep (ovine) tracheobronchial tree of up to 13 generations was investigated numerically. The lung geometry was segmented and reconstructed from computed-tomographic (CT) images. The flow characteristics in the image-based sheep airway were compared with the flow patterns produced by a Weibel-based model at prime locations. Boundary conditions were prescribed 1) a velocity profile from experimental data at the inlet and 2) zero pressure at the bronchial outlets. A mesh convergence study was carried out to establish confidence in the model predictions, and gross left-right ventilation was validated against experimental xenon wash-in-washout data. Detailed flow characteristics were investigated at three points in the breathing cycle: 1) peak inhalation, 2) peak exhalation, and 3) transition. Simulation results revealed fundamental differences between airflow in monopodial and bipodial branching airways. Compared with idealized bipodial flow, the flow in the sheep airway was asymmetric and highly vortical, especially during exhalation and transition. The streak lines during the inhalation phase suggest that the left and right upper lobes are ventilated by airflow in the peripheral region of the trachea. This work may contribute to understanding the interplay between structure and function in the lung.

Rarefaction and compressibility effects of the lattice-Boltzmann-equation method in a gas microchannel.

A wall equilibrium boundary condition for an implicit lattice-Boltzmann-equation method is proposed to simulate gas flows in a microchannel with rough surface on the characteristic length of gas molecules. The boundary condition is based on the assumption that impinging molecules reach equilibrium with the surface. The molecular mean free path used to define the Knudsen number is determined by the lattice speed and the relaxation time of the lattice-Boltzmann equation. With the wall equilibrium boundary condition and the appropriate relation defined for the Knudsen number and the relaxation time, the computed slip velocity and nonlinear pressure distribution along the microchannel are in excellent agreement with analytical solutions.

Pressure evolution lattice-Boltzmann-equation method for two-phase flow with phase change.

A lattice-Boltzmann-equation method for nonideal gases augmented by the pressure evolution equation is proposed to simulate isothermal two-phase fluid flow with phase change. The pressure evolution equation is derived by taking time derivative of the equation of state for nonideal gases. Unlike previous methods that use the equation of state to update pressure, the pressure field is evolved using the pressure evolution equation. The new approach has two advantages. First, it can avoid spurious pressure fluctuations at phase interfaces that develop owing to the pressure update by the equation of state, thus improving numerical stability of the method. Second, it permits compressibility of the fluid at phase interfaces when phase change occurs due to pressurization and depressurization. The proposed method is applied to simulate an isothermal phase change process. The numerical result is in excellent agreement with the analytical solution.

Naricolax insolitus n. sp., a bomolochid copepod (Poecilostomatoida) parasitic in the nasal cavities of silver pomfret Pampus argenteus off Taiwan.

A new species of bomolochid copepod (Poecilostomatoida), Naricolax insolitus n. sp., parasitic in the nasal cavities of the silver pomfret Pampus argenteus (Euphrasen) from the Strait of Taiwan is described. The new species is distinguished from its only known congener, N. atypicus Ho, Do & Kasahara, 1983, by possessing the following four apomorphic features: (1) a complex outgrowth on the egg-sac attachment area; (2) a bent egg-sac; (3) a sharp hook (modified seta V) on the caudal ramus; and (4) an armature of II,I,4 (instead of II,I,5) on the terminal segment of leg 4 exopod. This is the first record of parasitic copepod from the nasal cavities of the silver pomfret.

New species of Metacaligus (Caligidae, Copepoda) parasitic on the cutlassfish (Trichiurus lepturus) of Taiwan, with a cladistic analysis of the family Caligidae.

Metacaligus latus n. sp. (Copepoda, Caligidae) is described from specimens found parasitic in the oral and gill cavities of the cutlassfish, Trichiurus lepturus Linnaeus, caught from the Strait of Taiwan and landed at Dong-Shih Fishing Port in Chiayi County, Taiwan. It is close to M. uruguayensis (Thomsen, 1949), but can be distinguished from the latter by the possession of shorter caudal rami in both sexes and wider cephalothorax and genital complex in the male. Cladistic (phylogenetic) analysis of the Family Caligidae, based on 23 selected morphological characters, revealed that Metacaligus Thomsen, 1949 is distantly related to Caligus Müller, 1758. It is a valid genus and occurs in sister-group relationship with Apogonia Cressey and Cressey, 1990.
