Extreme conformational constraints in pi-extended tetrathiafulvalenes: unusual topologies and redox behavior of doubly and triply bridged cyclophanes.

Doubly and triply bridged 9,10-bis(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)-9,10-dihydroanthracene (ex-TTF) derivatives have been synthesized. Key steps are the generation and macrocyclization reactions of ex-TTF-dithiolate reagents. The X-ray crystal structures of the doubly bridged cyclophanes 15 and 16 and the triply bridged system 23 show that the saddle-like conformation of the ex-TTF framework is enhanced by the short bridges between the dithiole rings. Unlike all previous ex-TTF derivatives (which display a single quasi-reversible two-electron oxidation wave, D0 --> D2+), cyclic voltammetry of the cyclophanes reveals two reversible, one-electron oxidation steps (D0 --> D*+ --> D2+), with differences between the half-wave potentials (E2(1/2) - E1(1/2)) of 0.22-0.26 V. The conformational changes and gain in aromaticity which drive the second oxidation process in unrestricted ex-TTF systems (including singly bridged cyclophanes) have been prevented by multiple bridging. The radical cation species gives rise to a very broad, low-energy band (lambdamax = 2175 and 2040 nm for 15 and 21, respectively), assigned to an intramolecular interaction. The steric constraints imposed by multiple bridging have become so extreme that the pi-framework of 15, 16, 21, and 23 exhibits remarkable optical and redox behavior which is not characteristic of ex-TTF systems.

Surface pressure induced charge transfer between fullerene and tetrathiafulvalene derivative in Langmuir-Blodgett films.

Structures and electronic states of a 1:1 mixture of bis-tetrathiafulvalene annulated macrocycle (1) and C60 in Langmuir films at the air-water interface and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films on solid substrates were examined. Compression of the Langmuir films induced for the first time a phase transition from a weakly interacting state without charge transfer (CT) to a neutral CT state. The scanning force microscope images of LB films transferred onto mica by a single withdrawal showed quite different spatial patterns depending on the CT states. When deposited at around 1 mNm(-1), a domain structure with 3 nm height was obtained, which corresponded to the state without CT interaction. Contrastingly, once the CT interaction was induced by applying surface pressure, a network structure was observed with a height of 6 nm. The CT band, whose transition moment was almost parallel to the substrate surface, was observed at 11.5 x 10(3) cm(-1) in the polarized UV-VIS-NIR spectra of the films deposited at 9 mNm(-1). The phase transition was irreversible, although the surface pressure-area isotherm showed a reversible behavior below 9 mNm(-1). The morphology and electronic state of the film was controllable merely by changing the surface pressure at the air-water interface.

Efficient solid-phase synthesis of peptide-based phosphine ligands: towards combinatorial libraries of selective transition metal catalysts.

A new methodology for the solid-phase synthesis of peptide-based phosphine ligands has been developed. Solid supported peptide scaffolds possessing either primary or secondary amines were synthesised using commercially available Fmoc-protected amino acids and readily available Fmoc-protected amino aldehydes for reductive alkylation, in standard solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS). Phosphine moieties were introduced by phosphinomethylation of the free amines as the final solid-phase synthetic step, immediately prior to complexation with palladium(II), thus avoiding tedious protection/deprotection of the phosphine moieties during the synthesis of the ligands. The extensive use of commercial building blocks and standard SPPS makes this methodology well suited for the generation of solid-phase combinatorial libraries of novel ligands. Furthermore, it is possible to generate several different phosphine ligand libraries for every peptide scaffold library synthesised, by functionalising the scaffold libraries with different phosphine moieties. The synthesised ligands were characterised on solid support by conventional (31)P NMR spectroscopy and, cleaved from the support, as their phosphine oxides by HPLC, (1)H NMR, (31)P NMR and high resolution ESMS. Palladium(II) allyl complexes were generated from the resin bound ligands and to demonstrate their catalytic properties, palladium catalysed asymmetric allylic substitution reactions were performed. Good yields and moderate enantioselectivity was obtained for the selected combination of catalysts and substrate, but most importantly the concept of this new methodology was proven. Screening of ligand libraries should afford more selective catalysts.

Versatile solid-phase synthesis of peptide-derived 2-oxazolines. Application in the synthesis of ligands for asymmetric catalysis.

A mild and high-yielding procedure for the solid-phase synthesis of 2-oxazolines from amino acids is described. The two-step protocol is based on the iodination of serine containing peptides, followed by in situ nucleophilic attack of the carbonyl oxygen from the next amino acid. Phosphinylation of the terminal amino group cleanly furnishes a resin-bound phosphine-oxazoline ligand, which upon palladium complexation was applied as catalyst in asymmetric allylic substitution. Langmuir-Blodgett films of amphiphilic bis(tetrathiafulvalene) macrocycles with four alkyl chains.

Amphiphilic bis(tetrathiafulvalene) [bis(TTF)] macrocycles with four alkyl chains were fabricated as novel electrically active Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films. Two TTF units were linked via [24]crown-8, [21]crown-7, and [18]crown-6 macrocycles, forming charge-transfer (CT) salts with 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyano-p-quinodimethane (F4-TCNQ) at the air-water interface and on solid substrates. The CT salt of the amphiphilic bis(TTF)-macrocycle having a [24]crown-8 ring system formed a uniform surface morphology on mica. Using single-crystal X-ray structural analysis, the layer structure between the hydrophobic chains and the one-dimensional pi-pi stack of the CT salt was confirmed. Our results show that the bis(TTF)-macrocycle was folded at the flexible [24]crown-8 moiety, forming intramolecular pi-pi dimer structures and one-dimensional intermolecular pi-pi stacks with F4-TCNQ dimers. The open-shell electronic structure of the LB films was determined by electronic spectra, electrical conductivity, and electron spin resonance analyses. Asymmetry was introduced into the bis(TTF)-macrocycle by changing the ring size from [24]crown-8 to [21]crown-7. The surface morphology of the CT salts with F4-TCNQ was established as two-dimensional round-shape domains on mica. Further reduction of the macrocyclic ring from [21]crown-7 to [18]crown-6 resulted in a CT salt of the bis(TTF)-macrocycle with F4-TCNQ with a leaf-shape domain morphology and a typical dimension of approximately 1 microm2 on mica. In general, decreasing the macrocyclic ring size from [24]crown-8 to [21]crown-7 or [18]crown-6 affected the inter- and intramolecular interactions and the surface morphologies of LB films.

New strategies and building blocks for functionalised 9,10-bis(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)-9,10-dihydroanthracene derivatives, including pyrrolo-annelated derivatives and pi-extended systems with intramolecular charge-transfer.

A range of new functionalised 9,10-bis(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)-9,10-dihydroanthracene (TTFAQ) derivatives have been synthesised from the key di(halomethyl) building blocks, 10-[4,5-bis(bromomethyl)-1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene]-anthracene-9(10H)-one 10, 10-[4,5-bis(chloromethyl)-1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene]anthracene-9(10H)-one 11 and 9-[4,5-bis(chloromethyl)-1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene]-10-[4,5-bis(hexylsulfanyl)- 1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene]-9,10-dihydroanthracene 18. A Diels-Alder strategy comprising trapping of the transient exocyclic diene 19, which is derived from 18, with 1,4-naphthoquinone leads to the aromatised TTFAQ anthraquinone system 21. Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons olefination of 21 with the anion generated from reagent 22 gave the fused bis(TTFAQ) structure 23. Pyrrolo-annelated derivatives 30-34 have been obtained in a sequence of reactions from compound 10. Mono-formylation of the pyrrole ring of 32 and 33 under Vilsmeier conditions gave 35 and 36 which upon reaction with 2,4,5,7-tetranitrofluorene gave the donor-pi-acceptor diads 38 and 39. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) in solution for all the TTFAQ derivatives shows the typical quasi-reversible two-electron oxidation wave of the TTFAQ core at potentials which vary slightly depending on the substituents. For example, the value of Eox is raised by the electron withdrawing anthraquinone and tetranitrofluorene units of 21 and 38, respectively. The CV of the conjugated TTFAQ dimer 23 showed two, two-electron oxidation waves corresponding to the sequential formation of 23(2+) and 23(4+) (delta Eox = 130 mV) providing evidence for a significant intramolecular electronic interaction, i.e. the dication 23(2+) acts as a conjugated donor-pi-acceptor diad, thereby raising the oxidation potential of its partner TTFAQ unit. Spectroelectrochemical studies on 23 support this explanation. A strong intramolecular charge transfer band at lambda max 538 nm is seen in the UV-Vis spectra of the TTFAQ-pi-tetranitrofluorene diads 38 and 39. The X-ray crystal structures are reported for compounds 30, 33 and 34. The pyrrolo-TTFAQ moiety adopts a saddle-shape with the central ring of the dihydroanthracene moiety folded along the C(9) ... C(10) vector in each case. Significant intermolecular interactions are observed in the structures.

Synthesis of novel phthalocyanine-tetrathiafulvalene hybrids; intramolecular fluorescence quenching related to molecular geometry.

A number of silicon phthalocyanine bis-esters have been synthesized and characterized, with axial ligands containing one or more tetrathiafulvalene groups. Variations in the substitution positions around a central aromatic "hinge" within the ligands lead to different molecular geometries, and the fluorescence of the macrocyclic core is subsequently quenched to varying degrees by the electron-rich tetrathiafulvalene moiety, the magnitude of this effect being dependent upon both the relative separation of the two units and the flexibility of the linking group. Pc derivative 24, with a highly flexible linker group, and pc derivative 28, with a dendritic axial ligand, have the intensity of the macrocycle emission reduced by 99% and 96%, respectively, relative to a similar silicon pc reference compound lacking the TTF moieties. Molecular modeling studies of a series of such hybrids allow the degree of this fluorescence quenching to be related to the intramolecular spacing. Additionally, the potential for rapid electrochemical switching of the phthalocyanine fluorescence by oxidation of the appended tetrathiafulvalene units is explored.

A (pi-extended tetrathiafulvalene)-fluorene conjugate. Unusual electrochemistry and charge transfer properties: the first observation of a covalent D(2+)-sigma-A(.-) redox state(1).

The synthesis of novel electrochemically amphoteric TTFAQ-sigma-A compounds (TTFAQ = 9,10-bis(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)-9,10-dihydroanthracene, sigma = saturated spacer, A = polynitrofluorene acceptor) is reported. Their solution redox behavior is characterized by three single-electron reduction and one two-electron oxidation waves. Electrochemical quasireversibility of the TTFAQ(2+) state and a low E(ox) - E(red) gap ( approximately 0.25 V) for 3-(9-dicyanomethylene-4,5,7-trinitrofluorene-2-sulfonyl)-propionic acid 2-[10-(4,5-dimethyl-[1,3]dithiol-2-ylidene)-9,10-dihydroanthracen-9-ylidene]-5-methyl-[1,3]dithiol-4-ylmethyl ester (10) has enabled the electrochemical generation of the hitherto unknown transient D(2+)-sigma-A(.-) state as observed in cyclic voltammetry and time-resolved spectroelectrochemistry. The ground state of compound 10 was shown to be ionic in the solid but is essentially neutral in solution (according to electron paramagnetic resonance). The X-ray structure of an intermolecular 1:2 complex between 2-[2,7-bis(2-hydroxyethoxy)-9,10-bis(4,5-dimethyl-[1,3]dithiol-2-ylidene)-9,10-dihydroanthracene and 2,5,7-trinitro-4-bromo-9-dicyanomethylenefluorene, 14.(17)(2), reveals, for the first time, full electron transfer in a fluorene charge-transfer complex.

Formation of oriented molecular nanowires on mica surface.

Molecular "nanowire" structures composed of the charge transfer complex of a bis-tetrathiafulvalene substituted macrocycle and tetrafluorotetracyanoquinodimethane were constructed on mica substrates by employing the Langmuir-Blodgett technique. The nanowires transferred from a dilute aqueous potassium chloride subphase had typical dimensions of 2.5 nm x 50 nm x 1 microm. The nanowires are oriented to specific directions, corresponding to the directions of the potassium-ion array on the mica surface having sixfold symmetry. Such correlation between the nanowires and the substrate surface was also observed when a dilute aqueous rubidium chloride subphase was used. On the other hand, the correlation completely disappeared when the subphase contained divalent cations, indicating that the molecular nanowires orient by recognizing the monocation array on the mica surface. The nanowires formed by the vertical dipping method coexist with the monolayers. Only nanowire structures are, however, observed when we apply the horizontal lifting method. Based on the crystal structure of a related complex, a possible structure of the nanowires is presented. The conductivity of the nanowires was estimated to be of the order of 10(-3) S x cm(-1). The nanowires formed specific (regular) structures such as T-shape junctions, suggesting their use in construction of future molecular nanoscale devices.

Solid-phase synthesis of a peptide-based P,S-ligand system designed for generation of combinatorial catalyst libraries.

An efficient methodology for the solid-phase synthesis of diverse combinatorial peptide-based P,S-ligand libraries based on a modular approach was developed. Chiral thioethers were introduced into a series of peptide scaffolds using commercially available Fmoc-protected cysteine derivatives, and secondary amines were incorporated into the peptide backbones by reductive alkylation using readily available Fmoc-protected amino aldehydes. Phosphinylation of the secondary amines of the scaffolds, applying two different reagents, yielded two different types of ligands. Subsequent complexation with palladium afforded six- or seven-membered chelates, respectively. The selectivity, in an asymmetric allylic substitution reaction, of the two different types of chelates, derived from the same peptide scaffold, was complementary in all cases studied, affording the product as opposite stereoisomers with up to 60% ee. These results hold great promise for the identification of highly selective catalysts upon screening of larger P,S-based catalyst libraries.
