Single-shot measurement of the electric field of optical waveforms by use of time magnification and heterodyning.

Time magnification and heterodyning are combined to allow single-shot characterization of the electric field of optical waveforms. The electric field of the source under test is obtained by Fourier processing of the magnified temporal intensity of the source heterodyned with a monochromatic source. An experimental implementation of this technique is characterized and used to measure various optical signals.

Characterization of nonlinear phase shifts by use of the temporal transport-of-intensity equation.

A temporal transport-of-intensity equation is derived to describe the evolution of the instantaneous power of the electric field in a dispersive medium. As its spatial counterpart, which can be used to measure wavefronts using the intensity measured after various amounts of diffraction, the temporal transport-of-intensity equation allows the determination of temporal phase shifts using only intensity measurements in a direct noninterferometric way. The application to the characterization of nonlinear phase shifts induced by self-phase modulation and cross-phase modulation is used to determine the nonlinear coefficient of a highly nonlinear fiber.

Complete characterization of periodic optical sources by use of sampled test-plus-reference interferometry.

An interferometric technique measuring the time-dependent electric field of a periodic optical source that uses samples of its interference with a reference source of short optical pulses is presented. Compared with other test-plus-reference techniques such as spectral interferometry and Fourier-transform spectroscopy, the technique is applicable when the signal under test and the reference signal do not originate from the same source. It is highly sensitive and allows the direct real-time characterization of optical sources and the extraction of a coherent periodic signal in an incoherent background.

Highly sensitive differential tomographic technique for real-time ultrashort pulse characterization.

We demonstrate a highly sensitive real-time optical pulse characterization technique based on differential chronocyclic tomography. The spectral intensity and phase of the pulse under test are reconstructed analytically from two experimental traces measured simultaneously in the spectral domain. The high sensitivity and accuracy are made possible by lock-in detection of the differential spectra in the simplified chronocyclic tomography. An accuracy of approximately 0.04 rad of spectral phase recovery is achieved with a 10-Hz refresh rate and 10-microW sensitivity. We also show that the measurement technique is applicable to pulses as short as approximately 100 fs.

Interferometric technique for measuring broadband ultrashort pulses at the sampling limit.

We present a new technique for measuring ultrashort optical pulses by use of spectral phase interferometry for direct electric-field reconstruction that is suitable for large bandwidth pulses. The method does not require generation of a replica of the pulse to be measured and encodes the spectral phase information in a spatial interference pattern. A major advantage of this method is that the spectral sampling saturates the Whittaker-Shannon bound. Moreover, the technique allows for the characterization of some types of space-time coupling. An experimental demonstration of the technique is presented.

Chromatic dispersion characterization by direct instantaneous frequency measurement.

A new concept for the measurement of chromatic dispersion is presented. The group delay of the device under test is directly obtained from the instantaneous frequency of a short optical pulse after propagation in the device, itself obtained with temporal and spectral interferometry. Temporal and spectral fringe encoding provide excellent accuracy and resistance to noise, and a wide variety of dispersions can be characterized even at high insertion losses.

Implementation of electro-optic spectral shearing interferometry for ultrashort pulse characterization.

Electro-optic spectral shearing interferometry is implemented for the highly sensitive characterization of ultrashort pulses from a free-running source. A simple phase-locked-loop clock recovery circuit is used to extract the high-frequency microwave clock signal to drive the phase modulator for spectral shearing. We demonstrate accurate full temporal characterization of 200-fs pulses from an optical parametric oscillator at 5-pW average power.

Complete temporal characterization of short optical pulses by simplified chronocyclic tomography.

A new self-referencing technique to characterize the temporal electric field of a short optical pulse is presented. The group delay of the pulse is directly obtained from two projections of the Wigner-Ville function after rotation of the pulse in chronocyclic space. Implementation of the technique requires only quadratic temporal phase modulation and two spectrum measurements, from which the electric field is directly and unambiguously reconstructed without any assumption. A device based on these principles is used to characterize the electric field of a 2-ps optical pulse.

Direct measurement of the spatial Wigner function with area-integrated detection.

We demonstrate experimentally a novel technique for characterizing transverse spatial coherence by using the Wigner distribution function. The method is based on the measurement of interference between a pair of rotated and displaced replicas of the input beam with an area-integrating detector, and it provides an optimal signal-to-noise ratio in regimes when array detectors are not available. We analyze the quantum-optical picture of the presented measurement for single-photon signals and discuss possible applications in quantum information processing.

Highly sensitive direct characterization of femtosecond pulses by electro-optic spectral shearing interferometry.

We report what is to our knowledge the first experimental demonstration of spectral shearing interferometry by use of an electro-optic temporal phase modulator to generate the spectral shear. This approach achieves far better sensitivity than nonlinear optical pulse characterization techniques, including other versions of spectral shearing interferometry. Temporal phase modulation is conceptually simple and is implemented easily with telecommunication components. The technique is versatile, and a wide range of pulse durations can be measured with minimal changes in the setup. We demonstrate the accurate characterization of a 156-MHz train of 1540-nm pulses with durations ranging from 750 fs to more than 30 ps after various amounts of chirping, at average powers below 1 microW.
