Synthesis, structure and fluorescent studies of novel uranium coordination polymers in the pyridinedicarboxylic acid system.

Self-assembly under hydrothermal conditions has been employed to synthesize several novel uranium-containing polymeric materials in the pyridinedicarboxylic acid (pydc) system. Uranium containing coordination polymers were synthesized utilizing 2,3-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (2,3-pydc), 2,4-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (2,4-pydc) and 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (2,6-pydc) as the organic linker. Furthermore, several bimetallic compounds were also synthesized, U-M-2,6-pydc (M = Cu, Ag, Pb). A new secondary building unit for uranium(vi) compounds has also been realized in compound 4 [(UO(2))(2)(C(7)H(3)NO(4))(O)(H(2)O)] through tetramer building units edge shared to form one-dimensional chains. Presented herein will be the syntheses, crystal structures and fluorescent properties of these uranium-containing compounds.

Novel coordination polymers and structural systematics in the hydrothermal M,M' trans-3(-3-pyridyl)acrylic acid system.

The bifunctional ligand trans-3-(3-pyridyl)acrylic acid has been utilized to promote the formation of a novel hetero-metallic [Cu3(C8H6NO2)6Nd2(NO3)6] (1) and two homometallic: [Nd(C8H6NO2)3H2O] (2) and [Cu(C8H6NO2)2] x H2O (3) metal organic framework (MOF) materials. The philosophy here is that a mixture of hard (Nd3+) and softer metal cations will show preference for the carboxylic and pyridyl functional groups, respectively. As such, a 3-D topology 1 has emerged as a stable, heterometallic structure. Efforts to explore structural systematics in this system have led to the synthesis of homometallic end members and hence the formation of a 2-D coordination polymer 2, and a 1-D coordination polymer 3. Presented is an analysis of the effect of a second metal centre on coordination environment, overall structure formation, thermal and luminescence properties.

Templated metal-organic frameworks: synthesis, structures, thermal properties and solid-state transformation of two novel calcium-adipate frameworks.

Two novel calcium-adipate framework materials have been synthesized hydrothermally. GWMOF-7 ([Ca(C6H8O4)(H2O)2]*(C10H8N2)) and GWMOF-8 ([Ca(C6H8O4)(H2O)2]*(C12H12N2)) both formed three-dimensional structures and were characterized with single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Thermal properties were also studied with thermogravimetric analysis, and show that these structures undergo a solid-state transformation into a denser three-dimensional framework.

Mica surfaces stabilize pentavalent uranium.

High-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to demonstrate that reduction of aqueous U6+ at ferrous mica surfaces at 25 degrees C preserves U5+ as the dominant sorbed species over a broad range of solution compositions. Polymerization of sorbed U5+ with sorbed U6+ and U4+ is identified as a possible mechanism for how mineral surfaces circumvent the rapid disproportionation of aqueous U5+. The general nature of this mechanism suggests that U5+ could play an important, but previously unidentified, role in the low-temperature chemistry of uranium in reducing, heterogeneous aqueous systems.

Syntheses, structures and fluorescent properties of two novel coordination polymers in the U-Cu-H3pdc system.

Two novel coordination polymers, UO2(C5H2N2O4)(H2O) (1) and (UO2)Cu(C5H2N2O4)2(H2O)2 (2), have been prepared by the hydrothermal reaction of uranyl nitrate hexahydrate [(UO2(NO3)2.6H2O], 3,5-pyrazoledicarboxylic acid (H3pdc) and copper(II) nitrate hemipentahydrate (Cu(NO3)2.2.5H2O) and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) and fluorescence spectroscopy. Compound 1 (monoclinic, P2(1)/c, a=6.9556(6)A, b=11.302(1)A, c= 10.5288(9)A, beta=90.057(2) degrees and Z=4) consists of a two-dimensional sheet containing uranyl hexagonal bipyramids. Compound 2 (triclinic, P-1, a=5.1014(7)A, b=7.6067(11)A, c=10.2910(15)A, alpha=72.380(3) degrees, beta=86.796(3) degrees, gamma=84.447(3) degrees and Z=1) consists of two-dimensional sheets. Both structures contain the linear UO2(2+) moiety and have extended networks built up from the H3pdc ligand. Compound 1 exhibits the characteristic UO(2)2+ emission spectra when it is excited at the ligand or uranium excitation wavelength. With the addition of the copper metal center in compound 2, the uranium emission is absent regardless of the excitation wavelength.

Toward templated metal-organic frameworks: synthesis, structures, thermal properties, and luminescence of three novel lanthanide-adipate frameworks.

Three novel praseodymium-adipate frameworks were synthesized hydrothermally. GWMOF-3 ([Pr(2)(adipic acid)(3)(H(2)O)(4)].adipic acid.4H(2)O) and GWMOF-6 ([Pr(2)(adipic acid)(3)(H(2)O)(2)].4,4'-dipyridyl) formed three-dimensional structures, whereas GWMOF-4 ([Pr(2)(adipic acid)(3)(H(2)O)(2)].H(2)O) produced a more dense, two-dimensional topology. Single-crystal X-ray and powder diffraction, IR spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and elemental analysis were employed to characterize all samples. GWMOF-6 represents an innovative step forward in metal-organic framework synthesis where a neutral molecular species not used in the construction of the framework is utilized as a structure-directing agent, or template. Furthermore, this template molecule (4,4'-dipyridyl) is shown to sensitize the fluorescence of lanthanide metal centers in a europium analogue of GWMOF-6.

Atomic engineering of mixed ferrite and core-shell nanoparticles.

Nanoparticulate ferrites such as manganese zinc ferrite and nickel zinc ferrite hold great promise for advanced applications in power electronics. The use of these materials in current applications requires fine control over the nanoparticle size as well as size distribution to maximize their packing density. While there are several techniques for the synthesis of ferrite nanoparticles, reverse micelle techniques provide the greatest flexibility and control over size, crystallinity, and magnetic properties. Recipes for the synthesis of manganese zinc ferrite, nickel zinc ferrite, and an enhanced ferrite are presented along with analysis of the crystalline and magnetic properties. Comparisons are made on the quality of nanoparticles produced using different surfactant systems. The importance of various reaction conditions is explored with a discussion on the corresponding effects on the magnetic properties, particle morphology, stoichiometry, crystallinity, and phase purity.

Topological evolution in uranyl dicarboxylates: synthesis and structures of one-dimensional UO2(C6H8O4)(H2O)2 and three-dimensional UO2(C6H8O4).

Two novel uranyl adipates are reported as synthesized via hydrothermal treatment of uranium oxynitrate and adipic acid. One-dimensional UO(2)(C(6)H(8)O(4))(H(2)O)(2) (1) [a = 9.6306(6) A, c = 11.8125(10) A, tetragonal, P4(3)2(1)2 (No. 96), Z = 4] consists of chains of (UO(2))O(4)(H(2)O)(2) hexagonal bipyramids tethered through a linear adipic acid backbone. Three-dimensional UO(2)(C(6)H(8)O(4)) (2) [a = 5.5835(12) A, b = 8.791(2) A, c = 9.2976(17) A, alpha = 87.769(9) degrees, beta = 78.957(8) degrees, gamma = 81.365(11) degrees, triclinic, P1 (No. 2), Z = 2] is produced by decreasing the hydration level of the reaction conditions. This structure contains a previously unreported [(UO(2))(2)O(8)] building unit cross-linked into a neutral metal-organic framework topology with vacant channels.
