Quantum stripe ordering in optical lattices.

We predict the robust existence of a novel quantum orbital stripe order in the p-band Bose-Hubbard model of two-dimensional triangular optical lattices with cold bosonic atoms. An orbital angular momentum moment is formed on each site exhibiting a stripe order both in the superfluid and Mott-insulating phases. The stripe order spontaneously breaks time-reversal, lattice translation, and rotation symmetries. In addition, it induces staggered plaquette bond currents in the superfluid phase. Possible signatures of this stripe order in the time of flight experiment are discussed.

Helical liquid and the edge of quantum spin Hall systems.

The edge states of the recently proposed quantum spin Hall systems constitute a new symmetry class of one-dimensional liquids dubbed the "helical liquid," where the spin orientation is determined by the direction of electron motion. We prove a no-go theorem which states that a helical liquid with an odd number of components cannot be constructed in a purely 1D lattice system. In a helical liquid with an odd number of components, a uniform gap in the ground state can appear when the time-reversal symmetry is spontaneously broken by interactions. On the other hand, a correlated two-particle backscattering term by an impurity can become relevant while keeping the time-reversal invariance.

Competing orders in one-dimensional spin-3/2 fermionic systems.

Novel competing orders are found in spin-3/2 cold atomic systems in one-dimensional optical traps and lattices. In particular, the quartetting phase, a four-fermion counterpart of Cooper pairing, exists in a large portion of the phase diagram. The transition between the quartetting and singlet Cooper pairing phases is controlled by an Ising symmetry breaking in one of the spin channels. The singlet Cooper pairing phase also survives in the purely repulsive interaction regime. In addition, various charge and bond ordered phases are identified at commensurate fillings in lattice systems.

Spin-orbit coupling-induced magnetic phase in the d-density-wave phase of La(2-x)Ba(x)CuO4 superconductors.

We study the effects of spin-orbit coupling in the d-density wave (DDW) phase. In the low-temperature orthorhombic phase of La(2-x)Ba(x)CuO4, we find that spin-orbit coupling induces ferromagnetic moments in the DDW phase, which are polarized along the [110] direction with a considerable magnitude. This effect does not exist in the superconducting phase. On the other hand, if the d-density wave order does not exist at zero field, a magnetic field along the [110] direction always induces such a staggered orbital current. We discuss experimental constraints on the DDW states in light of our theoretical predictions.

Dynamic generation of spin-orbit coupling.

Spin-orbit coupling plays an important role in determining the properties of solids, and is crucial for spintronics device applications. Conventional spin-orbit coupling arises microscopically from relativistic effects described by the Dirac equation, and is described as a single particle band effect. In this work, we propose a new mechanism in which spin-orbit coupling can be generated dynamically in strongly correlated, nonrelativistic systems as the result of Fermi surface instabilities in higher angular momentum channels. Various spin-orbit couplings can emerge in these new phases, and their magnitudes can be continuously tuned by temperature or other quantum parameters.

Quantitative test of SO(5) symmetry in the vortex state of Nd(1.85)Ce(0.15)CuO4.

By numerically solving models with competing superconducting and antiferromagnetic orders, we study the magnetic field dependence of the antiferromagnetic moment in both the weak and strong field regimes. Through a comparison with the neutron scattering results of Kang et al. and Matsuura et al. on Nd(1.85)Ce(0.15)CuO4, we conclude that this system is close to a SO(5) symmetric critical point. We also make a quantitative prediction on increasing the upper critical field B(c2) and the superconducting transition temperature T(c) by applying an in-plane magnetic field.

Exact SO(5) symmetry in the spin-3/2 fermionic system.

The spin-3/2 fermion models with contact interactions have a generic SO5 symmetry without any fine-tuning of parameters. Its physical consequences are discussed in both the continuum and lattice models. A Monte Carlo algorithm free of the sign problem at any doping and lattice topology is designed when the singlet and quintet interactions satisfy U0< or = U2< or = -3/5 U0 (U0< or = 0), thus making it possible to study different competing orders with high numerical accuracy. This model can be accurately realized in ultracold atomic systems.
