Histopathological and immunohistochemical aspects in both basaloid and spindle cell variant of cervical carcinoma.

The study was performed by using a number of eight cases of cervical carcinomas suiting to basaloid carcinomas and spindle cell carcinomas under the circumstances of usual histopathological staining. Immunohistochemically we used anticytokeratin monoclonal antibody (AE1/AE3) to confirm the epithelial differentiation and also PCNA to evaluate the cell proliferation rate. Tumor positiveness for AE1/AE3 cytokeratin cocktail confirmed its epithelial nature. Immunoexpression for PCNA indicated a high index of cell proliferation for all the cases with a more increased value for the basaloid carcinomas.

Histopatological aspects of endometroid carcinoma in correlation to the state of tumoral progression in women patients during their premenopausal period.

The performed study has comprised a number of 60 endometrial carcinomas, prevailed from women aged in the premenstrual period, in whose cases we have followed also the appreciation of the differentiating grading as well as the various aspects in neoplasies progression. The appreciation of the differentiating grading has allowed their placing as it follows: 39 cases of endometroid carcinoma well differentiated, seven cases of endometroid carcinoma mildly differentiated and five cases of endometroid carcinoma poorly differentiated. The correlation of the differentiating grading with the stage of tumoral progression has allowed the observation of the fact that while well invasive differentiated endometroid adenocarcinoma have been limited to the level of the uterine body, mildly and poorly differentiated invasive endometroid carcinoma besides profound myometrial invasion have associated cervical invasion and metastasis in structures situated at a real distance.

Clinico-imaging and anatomopathologic correlations in sarcomas of maxilla.

Sarcomas are relatively uncommon tumors, accounting for 1% of all malignancies. Sarcomas are commonly classified according to their site of origin: soft tissues or bone. The purpose of the clinic study was to focus the symptoms and the clinic signs. The radio-imaging study is essential in the evaluation of the maxilla tumors. The histopathologic study was done to determine the histological type, the differentiation level, the invasion level as well as the presence or absence of the metastases in drainage ganglia. The correlation of the findings of this study leads to a clear and correct clinic diagnosis, an adequate local or general therapy and a prognostic. The diagnostic role of imaging is essential and often permits the orientation to benignity or, on the contrary, requires biopsy if the image is an aggressive one or of uncertain nature. Advances in diagnostic imaging have contributed substantially to the management of tumors. The strong collaboration among the physician, imaging personnel and anatomo-pathologist serves the patient's benefit.

P53 and PCNA immunoexpression in endometrial carcinomas.

This paper analyzes 18 endometrial carcinomas with different degrees of differentiation, the objective being to estimate involvement of p53 oncoprotein in the mechanism of endometrial carcinogenesis and the possible correlations with the tumoral proliferative activity evaluated by PCNA. The p53 immunoexpression was positive in 44.4% of the studied endometrial carcinomas, divided in three groups, the intensity of the immunostaining for p53 being increased for the low differentiated and undifferentiated endometrial carcinomas, whereas the differentiated endometrial carcinomas were moderate or low p53 positive. All the investigated tumors were PCNA positive, the PCNA index being of 40% in well-differentiated carcinomas, while in low differentiated and undifferentiated endometrial carcinomas the medium values of PCNA were of 60%, respectively 85%. Correlating the p53 and PCNA findings, we noted that PCNA was expressed especially in the cases with increased proliferative activity, without a significant statistic correlation between p53 and PCNA expression.

[Morphopathological study in age related macular degeneration].

UNLABELLED: The aim of this paper is to study the morphopathological changes manifested in age-related macular degeneration. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The researched histopathological material consisted in two eye balls enucleated because of irreversible eye diseases from aged persons suffering from age-related macular degeneration. The method applied for processing the material was inclusion in paraffin, followed by usual coloration with hematoxylin-eosin. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The established changes (hard drusen, soft drusen, calcified drusen, changes of Bruch's membrane, subretinal neovascularization, serous retinal pigment epithelial detachment, disciform degeneration) prove the importance of Bruch's membrane in the pathogenesis of age-related macular degeneration.

Salivary gland Basal cell adenomas--immunohistochemical evaluation of four cases and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the antigen profile of cellular population from basal cell adenomas. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Histopathological and immunohistochemical evaluation of four-salivary gland basal cell adenomas; the pathological samples were provided by the Oral Maxilla Facial Surgery Department of the Clinical County Hospital from Craiova. RESULTS: All basal cell adenoma exhibit differentiation toward 3 cell phenotypes: ductal luminal, basal and myoepithelial. CONCLUSIONS: The antigen profile of these tumors closely regard with other variants of salivary gland adenomas, such as pleomorphic adenoma and myoepithelioma. So, we can conclude that these tumors had a common origin, most probably from intercalated ducts and the proportion of those 3 cellular types, their cytoarchitectural arrangements and the quantity of extracellular matrix production can do the differentiation between them.

Histopathologic aspects of the limited endometrial hyperplasias--a study concerning 149 cases.

This study concerns 147 cases of limited endometrial hyperplasia, diagnosed at patients between IV, V, VI and VII decades of life. Histopathologically, the aspects were of basal hyperplasia--40 cases and polyp hyperplasia--107 cases. The polyp-like hyperplasia was present at pre and postmenopausal patients. At the premenopausal patients the polyps were hormonally active: glandular, glandular-cystic and adenomatous type polyps. In contrast, the majority of the postmenopausal patients presented hormonally inactive polyps, like cystic atrophic or fibrous polyps. Modifying the prognosis of lesions, we took in consideration the morphologic changes associated with these lesions, like epithelial metaplasia or nuclear atypia.

Gingival angiosarcoma: histopathologic and immunohistochemical study.

Angiosarcomas of the head and neck are rare tumors, the intra-oral localization being considered exceptionally in the specialty literature. The diagnosis of this kind of tumor in gingival location is difficult, both to the rarity of this lesion at this site, and to the various histopathological aspects. We present the case of 70 years old male patient clinically diagnosed with tumor of the alveolar crest of mandible, which, histopathologically, associated areas of predominant vascular proliferation, with areas of carcinoma and sarcoma. Immunohistochemical, the tumor was investigated for antibodies which prove the origin of proliferating cells: CD31, AE1-AE3 and vimentin.

Immuno-histopathological correlations in exocrine pancreatic cancer.

UNLABELLED: The CA19-9 antigen is a tumoral marker that can be found in high concentration within a maligned digestive pathology. OBJECTIVE: Study of CA19-9 antigen from the immunological point of view, at the patients with pancreatic cancer, and his relation with the histopathological aspects. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The determinations have been done at the time of the diagnosis and after the treatment of the patients with pancreatic cancer (25). METHOD: indirect ELISA. RESULTS: The values of the CA19-9 marker have been increased at the time of the diagnosis either in pancreatic cancer of the head and mid. At the moment of the diagnosis the CA19-9 marker has higher values (150-400 U/ml) in cancer of the pancreatic body than in cancer of the head of the pancreas (40-200 U/ml). Correlating the size of the tumor with the value of the CA19-9 marker in the case of pancreatic cancer we have been shown the highest serum values (300-400 U/ml) at patients whose tumor was 3 cm bigger. Four weeks post-surgery the CA19-9 values decreased (37-100 U/ml) or reached normal levels (<37 U/ml). At patients with local recurrence or metastasis, especially hepatical, CA19-9 values have increased (100-400 U/ml in case of recurrence and 800 U/ml in case of metastasis). The highest values of the CA 19-9 marker were found in cases of mid pancreas adenocarcinoma. CONCLUSION: CA19-9 marker values higher than normal cause problems to digestive cancer (especially pancreatic). CA19-9 is a good marker for monitoring of these cancers after treatment; the favorable development is associated with lower values in comparison to the determinations before treatment, or with normal values, unfavorable evolution (local recurrence or metastasis) being associated with very high values. The high values of CA 19-9 suggest an adenocarcinoma.

HPV and p53 expression in dysplastic lesions and squamous carcinomas of the oral mucosa.

We studied 18 premalignant and malignant lesions of the oral mucosa, 3 dysplasias, and 15 oral squamous carcinomas with varied localizations: lips, palate, and tongue. Immunoassays for HPV were positive in 42.8% of the squamous carcinomas, without correlation with the pattern or the degree of differentiation of the lesions. P53 immuno-expression was positive in 2 of the 3 studied cases of dysplasia (66.6%) and in 13 from the 15 cases of squamous carcinomas (86.6%). The p53 immuno-positivity in both lesional categories, with a higher rate in carcinomas, indicates the fact that the p53 gene mutations can appear precocious in the oral carcinogenesis, but can not be used as malign potential prediction factor.

Cytokines levels in prostate adenocarcinomas.

In this research, we determined the levels of IL-2, IL-6 and TNF-alpha at 60 patients with prostate adenocarcinomas situated in II, III and IV stages. The method used was ELISA quantitative. We observed that the IL-2 levels were normal in II stage, and the levels of IL-6 and TNF-alpha were lightly increased. In III and IV stages of prostate cancer the levels of IL-2 were very low and the levels of IL-6 and TNF-alpha were very increased. The high levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines are correlated with diseases evolution. The decrease of IL-2 levels in advanced prostate cancer goes to the decrease of immune response in prostate cancer.

Tumoral stroma of salivary pleomorphic adenoma -- histopathological, histochemical and immunohistochemical study.

The aims of our paper were to establish the main histopathological, histochemical and immunohistochemical aspects of tumoral stroma from salivary pleomorphic adenomas. For this purpose we investigated 103 cases by the classical histopathological technique with paraffin embedding and staining with Hematoxylin-Eosin (HE), Hematoxylin-Eosin-Safranin (HES), trichromic Masson, trichromic Goldner Szeckelly, orcein and Periodic Acid Schiff-Blue Alcian (PAS-AA). Immunohistochemically, they were investigated for AE1-AE3, MNF116, CK8, EMA, vimentin, alpha-actin calponin, S-100, GFAP, collagen IV, and PCNA. The results of our study suggest the key role of neoplastic myoepithelial cell in the achievement of diverse morphological aspects of stroma in such neoplasms.

Pseudo-tumoral lesions of the cervix.

Pseudo-tumoral lesions of the cervix implies some reactive, non-neoplastic changes (metaplasia, hyperplasia, inflammation) that, occasionally, are wrong interpreted as precancerous or malign lesions. Even some can present architectural or cytological abnormal aspects, these are different from the one noted in carcinomas or the precursor lesions of carcinomas. Them recognition is indispensable in order to avoid the diagnose errors and the super evaluation of these benign lesions.

Microscopic assays regarding the renal damage following a post-combustional shock.

Over a period of three years (2000-2003) 39 autopsies were performed on patients with burns. Among them a number of 11 men and 28 women were aged between 28-92 years, the total burnt body surface was of 20% to 95%. Of all the cases nine patients died during the first 24-36 hours since the accident happened, presenting a burnt surface of more than 70%. In these cases, the renal lesions were minor but critical, presenting symptoms of acute renal failure (ARF). Subsequently, a number of 25 patients died within 1-4 weeks since the accident. Renal lesions were complex with tubular necrosis, lymphocyte infiltration and micro-abscesses. The burnt body surface of these patients was of 41-85%. In three cases, when death occurred within four weeks of hospitalization, the patients presented damages to other organs as well (multiple organs failure--MOF). The kidneys displayed tubular necrosis, fibrous micro-thrombi and infarct areas. In two cases coagulation intravascular dissemination occurred in patients with burnt body surface of 45-70% and aged of 42 and 60 years. Micro-thrombi and infarct areas dominated the renal lesions.

The ultrastructural aspects of neoplastic myoepithelial cell in pleomorphic adenomas of salivary glands.

The purpose of this study has been to establish the major ultrastructural aspects of the myoepithelial cell and the myoepithelial-like cells proliferated in the pleomorphic adenomas of salivary glands. Thus, twelve benign pleomorphic adenomas of salivary glands have been studied by electron-microscopy transmission techniques. Our analysis has proved the proliferation of two major cellular populations, one of ductal type and one of myoepithelial type, which tried to reproduce the tubulo-acinar cytoarchitecture from the normal salivary glands. We have also noticed the key role of the so-called 'modified' myoepithelial cells from the periphery of the proliferating epithelial units in the genesis of the myxoid and chondromyxoid tumoral stromal areas. All these ultrastructural aspects have explained the great histological diversity of these salivary gland neoplasms as well as the key role of the myoepithelial cell in its histogenesis.
